Having lived in California until 1970,my family has felt a number of earthquakes. We have been fortunate, however, to have suffered no bodily harm or property damage.
There is a website that lists all California earthquakes recorded from 1769 to the present. The site lists the dates and times as well as the magnitude (震级) and the exact location of any quake that measured more than 6.0. There are only a few quakes that stand out in my memory and, luckily, none is shown in the website. So, my personal experience with earthquakes might be considered insignificant.
There are three earthquakes that are difficult to forget. The first one was in 1955 and our oldest daughter was walking with me in our backyard in Redwood City in California. As the shaking became stronger I held her to me with one arm as I held on to one of our fruit trees with the other. All three of us (my daughter, I and the tree) shook for two or three minutes that to us felt like hours.
The second one was in 1963. Our entire family was visiting Disneyland in Southern California. The earth started to shake just as we were beginning to walk from our hotel toward the famous landmark.
My third experience with an earthquake was a lonely one in California. It was in my sixties and I was alone in an old church. As the building started to shake, I quickly headed for the door to go outside. I remember I said a little prayer — something like, “Help me get out of here in time, Dear Heavenly Father”. Minutes later, I was safe outside.

The Global Heritage Fund, a nonprofit organization, aims to protect places of cultural importance in developing countries for the reasons that these countries often have few resources to protect such places and that other major cultural organizations often pay more attention to protecting places in developed countries. For example, UNESCO has 45 World Heritage places in Italy, 42 in Spain, but Peru, famous for its ancient Incan buildings, has only 9 World Heritage places. Guatemala has only 3.
The fund recently released a list of cultural treasures in the developing world that are in danger of disappearing. These places are important because they are records of our human civilization. Globalization has created an international culture that is about sameness. But the endangered places are trying to protect the rich differences of human culture throughout history.
One of the fund’s current projects is in Guatemala’s (危地马拉) Mirador Basin, which contains several important examples of ancient Mayan settlements. The buildings are surrounded by forests.
Centuries of tree growth has covered the pyramids and religious buildings, which provides some of the finest examples of the early part of the Mayan civilization (玛雅文明). But this area is in danger from robbers and people cutting trees illegally. Also, over the past ten years, over 70% of the natural environment in the area has been destroyed by fires.
The fund has 3 goals for its Mirador project. One is helping the government obtain UNESCO recognition. Another is establishing permanent protection for the area. And the third is working to make the area a sustainable protected area within 10 years.
To meet these goals, money from the fund will go toward restoring the buildings of El Mirador and mapping and exploring newly discovered buildings. The fund is also paying to train local guides on how to stop theft and illegal tree-cutting. Educational programs are helping to give people in the area the skills they need to have jobs that do not endanger this protected area.
The Global Heritage Fund says we have a duty to the people of the past, present and future to make sure we do not lose these examples of human history. Every country, organization and individual can play a role in helping to protect this rich history.
8.Why does the Global Heritage Fund focus on protecting cultural places in developing countries
A.They are fascinating and dangerous. B.They are more important to mankind.
C.They are attractive to tourists. D.They are poor and often ignored.
9.Why is protecting the endangered places important in the time of globalization
A.Because the rich differences of human culture should be preserved.
B.Because the developing world needs them to make money.
C.Because they can help speed up the process of globalization.
D.Because we should create an international culture about sameness.
10.What does the Mirador project mainly want to achieve
A.Financial cooperation. B.National recognition.
C.Sustainable protection. D.Employment promotion.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.World Heritage in Danger B.Every Project Matters
C.The Global Heritage Fund D.Every Individual Matters

When living or travelling internationally, we notice the differences between cultures before seeing the similarities. At first, some differences are easy to spot. Over time, however, there are some curious similarities between how people in the UK and China communicate. Indeed, international residents in both countries often complain about having to read what local people really mean, because it often differs from what is said.
In the UK, outsiders often get confused when they realise that a person making rude comments was actually showing love. In situations like this, context is everything. Likewise, in China, outsiders must infer most meaning from context and from what is not said, rather than from what is. Otherwise, misunderstandings happen.
The UK and China contexts share further cultural features, which greatly influence how people communicate, including the cultural trait (特点) of non-conflict. The British will do everything to avoid conflict. They wil probably tell the waiter it was lovely even when served with poor quality food. This cultural trait can cause major misunderstandings. For example, a British business partner who is deeply unhappy with your proposal will probably say “there are just a couple of small concerns,” rather than telling you that the entire proposal is unsatisfactory.
Chinese communication shows a very similar conflict prevention. Often challenges, errors, mistakes, or problems remain completely taboos (禁忌) as topics of discussion, even though everyone knows of their existence. Instead, people talk about working towards further goals or objectives, rather than directly admit that the current situation is far from satisfactory. Likewise, Chinese people like to keep a sense of harmony within all environments, and so avoid open criticism of each other. This is very similar to the way that a British person might tell you a colleague “is very confident” rather than that they are rude. In this sense, the British and Chinese can appreciate each other for harmony.
12.What does the author suggest in Paragraph 2
A.Polite comments are encouraged.
B.Learning what is not said is difficult.
C.Context is important in communication.
D.Misunderstandings often happen among outsiders.
13.What will the British and the Chinese probably both agree with
A.Talking over taboos in discussions.
B.Preventing misunderstandings in work.
C.Avoiding discussing one’s mistakes in public.
D.Making use of cultural traits in communication.
14.How does the author develop this passage
A.By using figures.
B.By making comparison.
C.By listing reasons.
D.By making classifications.
15.Which is the most suitable title for the passage
A.Cultural Context
B.Conflict Prevention
C.Cultural Differences
D.Communication Puzzles

47. Both of them went outside even though Stewart could not stay outdoors for a long time. As soon as they went out, Tim couldn’t wait to rush into the snow. Soon, they made a huge snowman together. Stewart rolled his wheelchair, singing and dancing with Tim, their faces glowing with happiness. By the time Tim’s parents realized that their son was missing, they happened to see him having a lot of fun with his grandfather in the snow. Unfortunately, just as they were enjoying themselves, Stewart fell over, and Tim’s parents called an ambulance to take him to the hospital.
To Stewart’s surprise, his children and grandchildren were all around him when he woke up in hospital. Stewart was very happy to get together with all his family members again, although this time it was in hospital. All Stewart’s children were ashamed of being too busy with work to accompany Stewart. After Stewart recovered, Gregory, Sean and Lucy rescheduled a late Christmas night. They gathered their children and father at the dinner table, and baked Dad’s favorite pizza. They all greeted,“Merry Christmas!”
