On January 2, while Mom was visiting me in Iowa, I told her, “I don't like gymnastics anymore. I want to try dancing, or become a singer. I can get a job in Virginia. I just want to come home.”
Mom's eyes narrowed and her expression turned to stone. “You're breaking my heart, Brie,” she said. “You've been doing gymnastics for ten years, and now you want to quit Have you lost your mind ”
I hadn't lost my mind, but I had lost my fire. It's an entirely different thing to push toward that dream when you feel alone.
“I'm not trying to break your heart, Mom,” I said. “I just don't want to do it anymore.”
“I know you miss home. But you've signed a contract that says you will represent your country to the best of your ability. You've got a responsibility to your teammates. And now you just want to walk away I will not let you be dishonorable. If you don't like gymnastics, then at the very least, you will finish the season.”
The next afternoon as I dragged myself into Chow's gym, I thought of the efforts Mom had made in order to pay for my training. I thought of my two sisters: Arielle, who gave up ballroom dancing, and Joyelle, who stopped ice skating so that our single mom could afford to keep me in gymnastics.
For now, here's what you need to know: Exactly 210 days before I ever attempted my first vault (跳跃) in the London Summer Olympics, my leap of faith came this close to ending in a crash of disaster.
24. The author wanted to give up gymnastics because _____.
A. she thought she loved music more
B. she was overcome with homesickness
C. the training for the Olympics was too hard
D. the Olympic gold medal was beyond her reach
25. How did the author's mother feel on hearing her words
A. Sad. B. Helpless. C. Calm. D. Supportive.
26. We can infer from the passage that the author _____.
A. had a bad childhood B. realized her Olympic dream
C. changed her mind in the end D. was born into an athletic family
27. What would be the best title for the passage
A. A quitter B. My mother C. A distant dream D. My leap of faith

A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops (笔记本电脑).
Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility (容易辨认). But the research has found that laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.
Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to take notes "mindlessly" by writing down word for word what the professors said.
In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.
The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.
The researchers’ report said, “While more notes are beneficial, if the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears.”
In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.
These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.
28. More and more students use laptops for note-taking because they can _____.
A. take more notes B. apply concepts better
C. get higher scores D. understand lectures better
29. While taking notes, laptop users tend to be _____.
A. tireless B. skillful C. mindless D. thoughtful
30. The author of the passage aims to _____.
A. promote the use of laptops B. explain the process of taking notes
C. stress the benefit of taking notes by hand D. examine the importance of long-term memory
31. The passage is likely to appear in _____.
A. a science magazine B. a finance report
C. a newspaper advertisement D. a computer textbook
D
Regardless of intention, situation or even the facial expression of the person staring at others, it makes most people — in most cultures — uncomfortable to be gazed upon. Staring at others is rude because it makes people feel self-conscious. Etiquette and manners show that we should make those around us feel at ease. Anytime you’re giving someone the impression that they’re standing out, the gesture is usually going to come as unwelcome.
Human brain seems to enjoy categories. Are you a man or a woman Is this object big or small Threatening or safe It’s something we do nearly constantly and seems to come quite naturally. Of course, most of us who are sighted do this by looking at the world around us and processing it. Even glancing at a stranger’s face requires a pretty decent categorization process, where we check the eyes, nose and mouth quickly for recognition. The thing is, a small deviation (偏差) in what we’re used to — let’s say an obvious birth mark or a scar at the lips — might send our brain into overdrive, as we now might not as quickly scan and forget. So what do we do We stare. Some assume that this is a good way to make sure we’re sticking with our own family or community or — at the very least — it implies we’re avoiding enemies.
Now in a way, that could be an argument for why it’s rude to stare. It implies that someone is different or strange-seeming. That’s a very dangerous and offensive action towards a person with a disability or who is physically marked by a cultural or racial mark different from our own.
However, watching people who are different from us is sometimes helping us learn and understand. Children might learn better about differences and how to treat others equally after closely observing someone who doesn’t look like them.
32. Which word may replace the underlined word “Etiquette” in Paragraph 1
A. Behavior. B. Politeness. C. Ceremony. D. Law.
33. When a person is staring at others, he _____.
A. makes others uneasy B. feels self-conscious
C. has good intention D. makes people shy
34. What question might people ask naturally when seeing a little baby
A. Is it beautiful B. Is it a boy or a girl C. What is its name D. How old is it
35. What can we learn about the author's opinion on staring
A. It’s offensive. B. It helps human survive.
C. It implies danger. D. It depends on situations.
