What will man be like in the future—in 5000 or even 50, 000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time. Let us take an obvious example. Man , even five hundred years ago , was shorter than he is today. Now , on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time , so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modem world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% 0f the brain’ s capacity. As time goes on , however , we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger. Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact , we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man’ s eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time , however , our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future , then, both sexes are likely to be bald. Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own. ., . , . 1. The passage mainly tells us that _______. A. man’s life will be different in the future. B. future man will look quite different from us. C. man is growing taller and uglier as time passes. D. human’s organs’ functions will become weak “ 2. The change in man’s size of forehead will probably be because ___________. A. he makes use onIy20% of the brain’s capacity. B. his brain has grown larger over the past centuries. C. the other 80% of his brain will grow in due time D. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on : 3. What will be true about a human being in the future? A. He will be hairless because hair is no longer useful. B. He will have smaller eyes and will wear better glasses. C. His fingers will grow weaker because he won’t have to make use of them. D. He will think and feel in a different way. 4. It is implied that ________. A. human beings will become less attractive in the future B. less use of a bodily organ may lead to its degeneration C. human beings hope for a change in the future life D. future life is always predictable

Successful children would like to get lots of praise which encourages such resilient(有弹性的) thought as “I didn’t’ t get an A on the maths test, but I’m the best hitter on my baseball team and if I can get up on stage and play a violin in front of strangers, I can certainly run for class president.” All children can learn the think like that if they’re given the chance to discover what they’re good at. “Extracurricular( 课程以外的) activities, hobbies even schoolwork help children learn about their own sense of purpose, worth and promise.” explains Leffert. Another reason to encourage children in their life and study is that they learn to link success with hard work. “When a child works at learning to hit a baseball , plays music or joins in a computer game and then finally masters it, he feels an unbelievable sense of making something well done, ” says Master. “He also learns that even when he thinks he can’ t do something. if he keeps on trying and practising he may success.” . That’ s what happened to a ten-year -old in Northern California. “When my son went out for basketball and discovered he was the worst child on the team he wanted to go away.” his mother says. “But his father and I said he had to finish the season. The coach wouldn’t’ t let him give up either. He kept putting my son in the game and encouraging him to try.” The young fellow finally shoot a basketball in the game. “You should have seen how proud be was, ” his mother says. “He realizes now that he wouldn’t’ t have had the experience if he hadn’ t kept trying.” 5. The resilient thought in the children that are encouraged are that ___________. A. if you meet a difficult thing, give it up B. keep doing, however difficult it is C. different people have different good qualities D. don’t decide what you will do before you’ve regarded it as best one 6. If you are given the chance to discover what they are good at all children can_____.
A. get lots of praise B. form the resilient thought in classes C. come away from keeping worrying about some troubles in their minds D. try their best to do things
