E-Skateboard
For a friend who used to skateboard as a teen but has got a bit out-of-shape over the years, how about an electric skateboard Control your speed with the remote control and let the wind blow through your hair as you race down the street. Though it is not cheap, it might be worth trying.
Pillow Speakers
With these speakers, you can fall asleep to the sound of waves, your favorite broadcast, or a relaxing song. With earphones, the cable (耳机线) can be uncomfortable to sleep on. This is the perfect gift for people who're always looking for their keys.
Attach the key finder to your key chain, and by using your phone you can make the finder ring to let you know where it is. It can also warn you if your keys are too far away from you. If you drop your keys, the key finder app keeps track of the last place your keys were and displays the location on the map.
TV Back Lights
Leaving the lights on when watching a movie is too bright, but if you switch them off, it tires your eyes. These LED strips solve that problem and make your movie experience even more enjoyable. Researchers from the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) discovered that ant species Formica fusca (丝光褐林蚁) has a well developed sense of smell. It was able to tell cancerous cells from healthy cells in humans, thanks to their sense of smell. But more clinical tests must be carried out before they could be used in clinical settings like hospitals, the team said. They suggest that in future, ants could turn out to be better at dogs when it comes to locating cancerous cells in humans.
To conduct their research, the scientists performed tests with 36 ants. First, the specialists exposed the ants to the smell of a sample of cancerous human cells. This odor (气味) was then associated with a reward of sugar. In a second step, the researchers exposed the ants to two different odors. One was a new healthy smell and the second was the smell of the cancerous cells. The test showed ants can tell the two kinds of smell successfully.
The researchers exposed the ants to different cancerous cells in the next test. They found that ants distinguish between two cancerous cells. After training, Formica fusca ants are able to detect organic compounds (合成物) given off by cancerous cells.
This isn’t the first time that scientists have used the animal sense of smell to locate cancerous cells. “Dogs’ noses are well suited for medical diagnosis (诊断) and used for the detection of cancer,” the researchers explained. However, training them requires several months to a year. On the other hand, insects can be easily raised, they are inexpensive, they have a very well-developed smelling system and hundreds of individuals can be conditioned with very few trials.
The approach could potentially be adapted to a range of other complex odor detection tasks including the detection of explosives, spoiled food, or other diseases, including malaria, infections, and diabetes (糖尿病).
24.What can we learn from the first paragraph
A.Ants can distinguish cancerous cells owing to their smell
B.Researchers found all ants have the ability to tell cancerous cells
C.Formica fusca was used in clinical settings to locate cancerous cells
D.Researchers found that ants have a better sense of smell than dogs.
25.What is the purpose of the second study
A.To show ants have the ability to tell healthy from cancerous cells.
B.To prove that ants can be used to cure cancers.
C.To show ants have the ability to distinguish two different kinds of cancerous cells.
D.To improve ants’ accuracy in telling cancerous cells.

Dogs are often called as “man's best friend”, MacKenzie, a four-pound Chihuahua (吉娃娃), was named winner of the 2020 American Hero Dog Competition on October 19, 2020.
In its tenth year in 2020 the annual contest is the brainchild of American Humane, the country's first national charitable organization founded for the safety and well-being of animals. Often called the “Oscars for dogs”, the award recognizes dogs who make extremely great contributions to society.
The competition of 2020 attracted over 400 entries(参赛者)from across the country. These heroic dogs have gone above the call of duty, saving lives, comforting the ill and aged and reminding us of the powerful, age-old ties between animals and people. While all were impressive, it was tiny MacKenzie who won the judges' hearts.
MacKenzie's growth was not easy. Born with a mouth disability, she had to be fed through a tube(管子)for the first year of her life. Despite her own struggles, she always seemed to think more of other animals in need. “Never have I seen such a will to live. Though sick, she carefully looked after the baby animals at the rescue(救助)center,” said her caretaker.
A life-saving operation performed in 2014 gave MacKenzie the ability to eat independently. The seven-year-old chihuahua is now working for the Mia Foundation, an organization that rescues and nurses animals with inborn disabilities. The chihuahua does an excellent job and has raised various animals. She plays nurse, cleans, comforts and hugs them, acting as their mother and teaching them how to socialize, play and have good manners.
In addition to her role as an animal caretaker, MacKenzie also visits schools to educate kids about the importance of accepting physical differences in both animals and people. Her heartwarming and inspiring story makes MacKenzie a worthy receiver of America's top dog honor.

D
Scientists, psychologists and English academics at Liverpool University have found that reading the works of the classical writers like Shakespeare and Wordsworth has a great effect on the mind, catches the reader’s attention and triggers moments of self-examination.
Using a special machine, they monitored the brain activity of 30 volunteers as they read works by William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, T.S. Eliot and others.
In the first part of the research, the brain activity of 30 volunteers was monitored as they read passages from Shakespeare’s plays, including King Lear, Othello, Coriolanus and Macbeth, and again as they read the text rewritten in a simpler form or modern language.
While reading the common texts, normal levels of electrical activity were shown in their brains. When they read the works of Shakespeare, however, the levels of activity jumped because of his use of words which were unfamiliar to them. The result of the test showed that the more challenging passages cause a greater degree of electrical activity in the brain than the common ones.
Scientists went on to study the brain activity as it responded to each word and recorded how it lit up as the readers came across unusual words, surprising phrases or difficult sentences in the classical works. As a result, this lightening up process of the mind lasted longer than that when volunteers read common texts, encouraging further reading.
The research also found that reading poetry especially increases activity in the right hemisphere (半球) of the brain, an area connected with “autobiographical memory”, driving the readers to think carefully about their own experiences based on what they have read. The academics said this meant the classical works of literature are more useful than self-help books.
Philip Davis, an English professor who has worked on the study in the university’s magnetic resonance center, announced this week: “Classical literature acts like a rocket-booster to the brain, which provides extra power for the brain. You may never imagine how powerful it is. The research shows such kind of literature can create new thoughts and connections in the young and the old.”
32.The underlined word “triggers” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to“_______”.
A.stops B.keeps
C.interrupts D.causes
33.Which of the following is NOT true about reading classical literature
A.It’s helpful for readers to come up with new ideas.
B.It’s an activity that is suitable for people of all ages.
C.It makes readers’ electrical activity of brain return to normal.
D.It makes readers’ brain more active than reading common texts.
34.From the research, we can learn that _______.
A.poetry increases left-brain activity more than other literary forms
B.the readers prefer Shakespeare’s works to the other writers’works
C.the words of classical works make it hard for volunteers to read further
D.reading classical works produces a good and long-lasting effect on the mind
35.What does the author mainly tell us in this passage
A.Classical works help the brain develop better.
B.Poetry is useful for developing people’s brain.
C.Common books are unpopular anymore.
D.Shakespeare’s plays are worth reading.

Bad Dreams Are Good!
Most of us dream, whether we remember them or not. What are dreams for A handful of 41 dominate. Sigmund Freud famously maintained that they reveal hidden truths and wishes. More recent research suggests that they may help us process intense emotions, or perhaps sort through and strengthen memories, or 42 random neuron(神经元) activity, or prepare responses to threatening situations. Others argue that dreams have no evolutionary function, but simply 43 personal concerns.
Despite being largely unsupported by 44 , Freud’s view maintains a strong following around the world. Researchers found that students in the U.S., South Korea, and India were much more likely to say that dreams reveal hidden truths than to accept better 45 theories. In the same study, respondents said that dreaming about a plane crash would cause them more 46 than an official warning about a terrorist attack. Even if dreams can't foretell the future, they seem to 47 our shared fascinations. The majority of dreams occur during REM sleep (深度睡眠) cycles, of which the average person has four or five a night.
A study of Canadian university students found the most common dream topics include school, falling, being chased, and arriving too late for something. For all the commonalities dreams 48 , they vary across time and culture — people who grew up watching black-and-white TV are more likely to dream in black and white. A 1958 study 49 that compared with Japanese people, Americans dreamed more about being locked up, losing a loved one, finding money, being 50 dressed or encountering a mad person. Japanese people were more likely to dream about school, trying repeatedly to do something, being paralyzed with fear, or “wild, violent beasts.” If human dreams sound 51 , bear in mind that even negative ones can have positive effects.
In a study of students taking a French medical school entrance exam, 60 percent of the dreams they had beforehand 52 a problem with the exam, such as being late or leaving an answer blank. But those who reported 53 about the exam, even bad ones, did better on it than those who didn’t. So the next time you dream about an education related experience in which you are unable to answer the questions or solve a problem, don’t 54 : It’s probably totally meaningless. Then again, your brain might be practicing so you'll be 55 if such an event ever comes to pass.

Emerging evidence in humans suggests a 56 (typical) Western high-fat, high-sugar junk food diet can quickly weaken your brain's appetite control.
After offering volunteers a week-long binge (大吃大喝) of waffles, milkshakes and similarly rich foods, researchers in Australia found young and healthy ones scored worse on memory tests and experienced a 57 (great) desire to eat junk food, even when they were already full.
The findings suggest something is special in the hippocampus (海马体)-a region of the brain 58 supports memory and helps to regulate appetite. When we are full, the hippocampus is thought to quieten down our memories of delicious food, thereby 59 (reduce) our appetite. When it’s interrupted, 60 control can be seriously damaged. Over the years, extensive research on 61 (mouse) has found the function of the hippocampus is very sensitive to junk food, but recently this has been observed only in young and healthy humans.
In 2017, after a week of Western-style breakfasts of 62 (toast) sandwiches and milkshakes, researchers found participants performed worse on learning and memory tests which are typically dependent 63 the hippocampus.
Now, in this latest study the scientists of the team 64 (find) that not only do such high-fat, high-sugar diets impair memory in humans, but they appear to directly affect our ability 65 (control) our appetite.

I yawned (打哈欠)as I got off the last step of the bus. I had woken early that morning, and had not been able to sleep on the long ride from Riverside High, thinking about that day’s race, the Eye Opener. I had never raced in a state-wide race before. Over thirty high school teams ran, along with quite a few colleges. The rest of my team and I unloaded the bus, and we relaxed and waited for our race patiently.
“Start warming up,” our coach told us, roughly forty-five minutes after we arrived. After finishing our stretches, we headed over to the starting line, eager for the race to begin.
The starter walked to the middle of the field. “There will be two commands,” his voice boomed, ‘‘Runners set, then the gun. If you hear another shot, return to the starting line to start again. ” My heart raced as I got my legs ready to race.
“Runners set!” the starter shouted Bam! The gun fired, and he rushed out of our way. Adrenaline (肾上腺素)rushed through my body as I raced through the mass of runners. As I rounded the first turn, my schoolmates greeted me with heartening shouts. Then, in what felt like only one minute, I arrived at the one mile mark.
“6’10”, a man declared as I ran by. I tried to ignore him, but my legs began to bum as I realized I had run a mile and still had two to go. I slowed down my pace, for I knew the second mile was the worst of all three. Minutes later, I felt horrible. My legs ached, feeling like lead blocks. My vision was clouded as sweat dropped down into my eyes, and my arms felt as if they would fall off if I swung them one more time. Just as I almost reached my limit, a boy passed me. He also seemed to have lost strength but soon he was a little ahead of me.

67. I gathered up my strength to speed up but suddenly fell to the ground. My world was clouded by total darkness. How I wish the ground to crack and swallow me! I could feel everybody was staring at me, widening their mouths and not being able to utter a word. The sudden silence brought sharp pain in my knees and “failure” was the only word flashing in my mind. Then the silence was broken by a deep voice, “You won’t give up so easily, will you ” The boy ahead of me turned back and pulled me up. “Let’s run to the finishing line together!” The second mile saw its end while we ran shoulder to shoulder.
In the last mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one, I asked the boy to rum without me. “You can win a place if you go by yourself.” I looked at him in the eyes with sweat blurring my sight. The boy breathing heavily, drops of sweat rolled down his face. He shook his head saying,“Winning a place is not that important, isn’t it ”. Then we smiled at each other as if we had been the only runners. The last mile seemed shorter and we were relieved when we passed the finishing line together with thunderous applause. I knew they cheered for us not for winning a race but for something more important.
