FURTHER EXPLORATION
Fascinating facts about renewable energy
1. Solar energy is almost 200 years old. Solar energy is far from a modern-day invention. In 1839, Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel discovered the “photovoltaic effect” — electricity generated from direct sunlight, otherwise known as solar energy.
2. Iceland leads the world with nearly 100% of its energy produced from renewable sources, drawing from the nation’s abundant geothermal (地热的) and hydroelectric (水力发电的) reserves.
3. Hydropower is the world’s largest source of renewable energy. The world’s largest hydroelectric power plant is the Three Gorges Dam in China.
FURTHER EXPLORATION
4. The Romans were the first to use geothermal energy to heat their homes. They designed buildings that encouraged warm air to move under floors and inside walls to heat their homes. The Romans also took advantage of direct geothermal energy, building communal baths on locations with hot springs across Italy.
5. Solar energy can be stored in salt. Known as molten-salt (熔盐) technology, this process uses concentrated sunlight to melt salt at 131 degrees Celsius. The salt is kept in its liquid form in an insulated (绝缘的) storage tank. With proper insulation, the thermal energy can be usefully stored for up to a week. Most solar thermal power plants now use this technology.

The plant is also China’s first ultrahigh-voltage power transmission channel and a significant project transmitting the green power generated in the Gobi Desert and other arid regions to the country’s centrally located Hunan Province, according to the company who is in charge of this project.
These energy generation facilities are located in the dry regions that cover 19 provinces of the country, and the first of these projects went online recently, as mentioned above.
Following the achievement, China is expected to step up the construction of renewable power generation facilities as it looks to the transition to greener forms of energy.
