Method PWP teaching method
Material Analysis "Results of the photo competition" introduces a photo competition, which includes 4 subjects. They are Nature group, City and People group, Music group and Home and Away group. The passage can be divided into 3 parts: The first part is the prologue spoken by the presenter. The second part is the introduction of the works by different person, which are rewarded. (Each group includes one work and one photographer.) The last part is the words of the present to close the competition with. The passage is a practical writing. The whole passage has 6 paragraphs. The first part (the first paragraph) is the prologue spoken by the present. It was written in present simple tense to describe the situation of the award ceremony, like "I am" and "we are". It also was written in past simple tense to describe the situation that the judges chose the best photos. The second part (the second, third, fourth and fifth paragraphs) introduces four different winners in different groups. Each paragraph clearly includes one winner and his works. Each paragraph also includes at least one attributive clause, which is the important grammar of this module. The sentences are made with some important phrases such as "fifteen-year-old", "protect against", "manage to do" and so on. The theme of this module is school life. It's classified in "People and Society". The passage help students feel the wonderful school life by introducing a photo competition. If students read the passage loudly, it makes students feel like that they are the presents of the competition, which is really funny for them, helping them being interesting in learning English.
Students Analysis Students learning the passage are from Grade Nine. Students are interested in school life. After Learning Module 11 Unit 1 and even Module 10, they have known the usage of attributive clause. Also, some of the grammar using is learnt by them in other module before such as "manage to do" and "compare to". Therefore, it is not difficult for them to understand this passage.
Teaching objectives At the end of this lesson, students are supposed to: Language Ability: 1. master some words and phrases like: congratulations, blouse, even though, rush, read out, protect against, headmaster. 2. understand the usage of attributive clauses made by which and who. 3. read through the passage and know about a practical writing of prologue for a photo competition. Learning Ability: 1. learn to work in group, discuss and show their own opinions. 2. improve their ability in skimming and scanning the passage to catch the information Cultural Awareness: know about the scenery in different countries like England and China. They can try to find out the differences according to the description of the photo. They can also know more about Chinese food by listening to other students introducing in the post-reading part. Thinking Quality: improve their divergent thinking by guessing activity.
Teaching Focuses and Anticipated Difficulties Teaching Focuses: It is vital for students to: 1. participate in different read activities and practise different reading skills. 2. have a divergent thinking while they are in the lead-in part. Anticipated difficulties: It may be difficult but important for students to writing a description and award speech for the photos they choose.

Homework Checking(3 mins) [Sharp eyes] T shows several important words of this passage to Ss. Ss need to speak them loudly when they see them. Some of the words are shown in Chinese, Ss need to speak the word in English. Words: tonight, winner, rush, even though, blouse, congratulations, headmaster, present. Before this lesson, T can arrange a task for Ss: They need to preview the words of the passage carefully, which are learnt in the word list. By speaking the words loudly and clearly, Ss can have a better understanding of the words they will see in the following learning. Also, T can check whether Ss finish homework carefully
Learning Objectives (2 mins) [Learning Objectives] T shows learning objectives to Ss. T can also ask Ss to read the objectives together. Learning Objectives helps Ss to know what they will learn in the lesson. They can have a prevision of this lesson.
Warming Up
Lead in (4 mins) [Photo Competition] T shows two different photos in the same subject -- food. Both of the photos are about Chinese food. One is zongzi. The other is sweet dumpling. Ss need to choose one which they like better. And try to answer the following question: Which picture do you like better Why In this part, T needs to make Ss as the judges of a photo competition. They need to choose a better photo by their own standards. Next, T asks Ss to answer the questions, trying to help Ss understand or memorize the Chinese traditional culture by knowing Chinese traditional food. Finally, it is a foreshadowing of post-reading part. Ss can express their opinions by using some adjectives. And they can also do it by making some sentences.
Learning Parts
Pre-reading (2 mins) [Before you read] T shows the following questions to Ss: 1. Have you ever heard of other photo competitions 2. If you need take a photo about Nature, City and People, Music or Home and Away, which group will you choose T just need to shows the questions to Ss but don't need them to answer right now. Ss need to keep the questions, and try to answer the questions on their own while they are reading the passage. T also can tell them to pay attention to the questions because they are related to the passage. They can help Ss know the passage clearly.
While reading (21 mins) [When you read] ①Skimming Task 1:Read and match. T asks Ss to skim the passage and try to finish Task 1. After finishing it, T invites Ss to share the answers. ②Scanning Task 2: Read the passage and choose the best answer. Ss need to scan the passage and finish Task 2. After finishing it, T invites Ss to share the answers. ③Reading together. Ss read the passage after the video. And then Ss read the passage together. First of all, T asks Ss to skim the passage and try to know the main idea of the passage. They can also divide the passage into three parts with the help of the task. Besides, they can also improve their ability in skimming. Second, Ss need to finish Task 2. They need to scan the passage and choose the correct answer. This task can not only help Ss know the detailed information of passage, but also improve their ability of scanning and doing exam. Third, Task 3 is for Ss to get the information of every winner in the passage. This task can help them know the information of the passage, and help them finish the next part, which will call back the first part.
Post reading (11 mins) [After you read] In this part, Ss need write down what the photo shows and the reason why they think what they choose is the better one on their handouts. Ss can do it with the help of the instructions on handouts. After finishing it, T picks up one memo from each group. The owners of the memos need to share their ideas with everyone. Ss also needs to introduce the food in the pictures. [T needs to show the pictures once again to help them finish this part.] After this part, T asks Ss who choose the first picture to put up their hands and counts. Finally, T announces the winners of this competition. In this part, Ss need to write down the reasons and the details of the photo. It can help Ss to apply what they learn because they have know how to describe what a photo shows in the passage. They can imitate. After finishing this part, Ss can improve their abilities in summarizing, imitating and sharing. In addition, Ss can know more about Chinese traditional culture by discussing with groupmates. Besides, they can try to think more about the traditional food they choose.
At the end of the lesson
Self-assessment (1 mins) Ss need to finish the table "Self-assessment" on the handout. By assessing themselves, Ss can know what problems they may have about today's lesson. T tries to find out the questions and solve them with Ss in the next class.
Homework (1 mins) Ss write a passage about the other passage. Next time they share the passage with everyone. After writing about one picture of the passage, Ss may have known how to describe a picture. The homework is designed for strengthen their ability in writing and consolidate what they learn in this lesson.

课后反思:
本节课以“我们的比赛”切入,让学生代入角色,试着去用自己的标准去做一次裁判,之后在读后活动中也呼应回这个比赛,让学生试着利用文中原句描写照片。课程目标基本能完成,学生参与度高,但在上完课后可以知道一些课堂用于以及衔接可以做得更好。后期可以对图片进行修改,也可以进一步根据不同班级的学情修改阅读难度,让学生学有所获。
