Pat Craig is the founder of The Wild Animal Sanctuary ( 保 护 区 ) in Oklahoma, whose aim is to rescue large animals from illegal roadside zoos. Over the past 40 years, Craig has rescued more than 1,000 animals.
Craig grew up on a farm in Colorado. When he was 18, Craig was already running some of the businesses. He planned to earn a business degree in college, but on a trip to Florida, he visited a friend working at a zoo. “He showed me around, and I saw lions
and tigers in extremely small cages,” he says. The animals were more than what a zoo needed and would likely to be euthanized (安乐死). When Craig returned to Colorado, he called the Denver Zoo about taking the animals, but Denver’s zookeepers also had the
same state. Then it occurred to him that he could bring the animals to his family farm. He was only 19, but he studied local regulations and laws and built a small non-profit compound. He next wrote to zoos nationwide offering to help if they planned to euthanize animals.
After about five years, he bought a second, larger land before moving to the sanctuary’s current location in Denver. The goal is to provide the animals with plentiful space and to treat them with respect. “Animals are running free and doing what they want. We just give them medical care and food,” he says.
Craig opened the sanctuary to visitors in 2002. Although he was originally unwilling to open it to visitors, Craig now sees it as an opportunity to educate more people. “We wanted the public to be aware of protecting animals.” Given his goal of treating the animals with respect, visitors could only observe the animals from a 30-foot-high, 1.5-mile-long elevated walkway.
Where did Pat Craig spend his childhood
In Oklahoma. B. In Florida.
C. In Colorado. D. In Denver.
What did Pat Craig intend to do after the trip to Florida
To earn a business degree in college.
To bring animals to his family farm.
To become the zookeeper in the Denver Zoo.
To study regulations and laws in his hometown.
Why did Pat Craig pay for a larger land
To euthanize animals. B. To live a comfortable life.
C. To offer animals more space. D. To attract more visitors.
Which of the following words can best describe Pat Craig
Kind and ambitious. B. Calm and courageous.
C. Cooperative and generous. D. Enthusiastic and professional.

Do you know how much water you need to drink each day For children and teenagers aged 9-13 years old, it’s about eight cups. Everything in our body needs water to work! But sadly, not everyone has access to clean drinking water.
Water containing bacteria or viruses can make us very sick and even die. That’s why people living in rural areas need to clean their water before they drink it. Besides, nearly all the traditional ways to pure water have negative side effects on your body. Therefore, we want to use a simple energy source. One that nearly everyone nowadays carries with them constantly is a smartphone! What if we could clean water with such a common device
We developed a downloadable app and a cheap device that can be plugged into a smartphone to kill harmful bacteria in water. In our experiment, the smartphone creates an electrical current from its battery and sends it through the copper wires. This causes
copper ions (离子) to be released from the wires. These copper ions can kill the bacteria.
Copper can be dangerous for humans but only in much higher concentrations (含量, 浓度). We find the perfect balance between killing all the bacteria and keeping copper levels low enough for humans. We work out how strong the current needs to be and how fast the water has to flow past the copper wires to achieve this balance. With this level, nearly all bacteria can be killed, while the released copper is still harmless to humans.
We did not test if our device can kill other harmful microorganisms like viruses. Work by other scientists using copper ions suggests that they can destroy viruses too. Of course, this needs to be tested specifically before our device can be used by humans for their everyday drinking water.
What is the main function of Paragraph 1
To arouse the readers’ interest.
To introduce the theme of the passage.
To show the author’s concern.
To provide some advice for readers.
What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A battery. B. An electrical current.
C. A copper ion. D. A smartphone.
What can be a suitable title for the passage
Why should teenagers drink more water
Why can copper ions kill the bacteria in water
How can your smartphone make water safe to drink
How is clean water beneficial to our health

My Best Teaching Experience
Tyler was only in my senior class for a semester. He had been suspended (使停学) many times in previous years because of his anger issues. When he entered my class, I thought the worst.
Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked to the class, I would ask students questions, calling them by name. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would respond with a joke. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.
About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually
get students involved in class discussions or at least have them sit quietly and attentively (专心地). By contrast, Tyler was often loud and sometimes rude.
He had been in so much trouble over the years. He expected his teachers to know
about his past: about how many times he had been sent to the office or suspended from school. I had found that these sorts of referrals (移交) were not very effective and that students would return from the office behaving worse than before.
One day, Tyler was talking over me while I was teaching. I stopped my lesson and said, “Tyler, why don’t you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own ” With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can’t remember what he said other than that he included some impolite words. I sent Tyler straight to the office, and he received a week’s suspension.
To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler’s anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was suspended from school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as a class. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return.
续写要求:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

第二节 读后续写(20 分)
Yours, Li Hua
On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him. At last he came, walking with his hands in his pockets. That image immediately brought back memories of the boy throwing a tantrum in class the other day. Yet I managed to restrain my anger this time. These past few days, I had been building a wall between us with blame and punishment, so I thought to myself that maybe I should try another way. “I want to apologize for the quarrel that we had in the middle of class, and I’m really sorry if it hurt your feelings,” I said, finally breaking the ice.
A spark of surprise flashed across his face. The naughty boy froze there, staring at me with wide eyes. It was clear that he had never heard an apology from a teacher before. “It is I who should say sorry,” he murmured, his face burning with shame. “I should have learned to control myself.” With a smile, I stepped forward and patted him on his shoulder, signaling to him to go back to his seat. In the days that followed, Tyler didn’t misbehave in class anymore and took an active part in class discussions. I had never expected “understanding” could make such a huge difference — it turned one of my worst teaching experiences into perhaps the best one.
