Have you ever bought something and then changed your mind For Amy, 15, this used to happen several times a week. Amy was a shopaholic (购物狂). She just couldn’t stop shopping and she loved special offers.
Amy’s bedroom is full of stuff (物品). “I’ve been to every shop in Birmingham, I think,” says Amy. She picks up some earrings (耳环). The labels (标签) are still on them. “These were half price,” she says. “I’ve never worn them.” Amy’s problem wasn’t just jewellery (珠宝). She also bought a lot of chothes, though not many shoes, because they were usually too expensive. She has also bought lots of other small things — like 20 new covers for her phone. She hasn’t used any of them.
According to experts, we all feel excited after we buy something new. For shopaholics, it’s a little different. Soon after they buy something, they think they’ve made a mistake and start to feel unhappy. So they buy themselves something else to feel happier.
Psychologists (心理学家) and doctors think thousands of people suffer from (忍受) the problem of shopaholics, and the situation is getting worse. There are also more teenage shopaholics now, although most young people don’t have enough money to go shopping very often.
Amy knew she had a problem. “I often buy something every day. When I couldn’t go shopping, I felt anxious (焦虑的). Then one day, my parents just looked at all the stuff in my room and said, ‘This is crazy!’ I knew they were right. I needed some big changes in my life.”
Amy now feels she has changed. She no longer thinks she’s a shopaholic.“When I want to buy something in a shop. I ask myself two questions: Do I need it Can I afford it The answer to the both questions is usually ‘no’, so I walk away. It’s great!”

Most of us use alarm clocks to wake up at the right time for school or work. We look at our watches to know the right time for the bus or train. However, there is also a right time to eat, sleep, exercise, and take medicine. We can’t look at a clock, for the right time for these activities. We must listen to the clock inside our bodies: the biological clock.
Barbara Wells exercised every morning. She woke up at 6:00 a. m. She ran about two miles before she went to work. But Barbara’s legs and back started to hurt. She did some exercise before she ran. But her legs and back still hurt. She ran slower, but the pain didn’t stop. Barbara talked to her doctor. The doctor said, “Don’t run in the morning. Try to exercise later in the day. That is the time when your body is at the right temperature for exercise. Your heart and lungs are very strong in the afternoon, too.” Now Barbara exercised after work. Her legs and back don’t hurt any more.
Today, doctors are learning more about chronobiology, the study of biological clocks. They are learning about the importance of time for your bodies. For example, it is best for people to go to sleep at the same time every night and to eat only when they are hungry. Also, doctors found that some illness, such as heart attacks, happen most often in the morning. This information tells them that the best time to take heart medicine may be at night. When patients take heart medicine at night, they may prevent a heart attack in the morning.
Many doctors believe chronobiology can help us live healthier lives. It may be the right time to listen to these doctors.
