五、阅读单选
If you’ve heard someone tell you something like “you are a carbon copy of your mother”, you should know this is wrong. In fact, we (especially women) are more like our fathers, and not our mothers. This article will show you which traits (体质) are inherited from the father and which is from mother.
In general, the mother’s genes (基因) are usually 50% of a child’s DNA, and the father’s genes are the other 50%. However, the father’s genes are much stronger than the mother’s, and that’s why they are usually more easily shown up.
The sex of the future baby depends on the father. From the mother, a baby always receives the X-chromosome (X染色体) and from the father either an X-chromosome (which means it will be a girl) or a Y-chromosome (which means it will be a boy). Interestingly, if a man has a lot of brothers in his family, he will have more sons and if he has a lot of sisters, he will have more daughters.
Besides, the weight of a child depends completely on his/her mother. It doesn’t depend on how much a father weighs. Her child will be thin if a mother is thin. And if a mother is overweight, her child may have extra weight right after birth.
Fathers will influence the height of their children more than mothers. Tall men usually have taller children. On average, about 60% to 80% of a person’s height depends on his/her parents, and the rest is the result of the food that is usually eaten, lifestyle and health. But not all children from the same parents have the same height. Usually, the younger children are shorter than the other older ones.
One thing you need to be clear is that even if you have good genes, you should still keep a healthy lifestyle. Because, in the end, your lifestyle plays an important role in how you will look and feel.
28.A child is more like his father because the father’s genes are ________ than the mother’s.
A.less B.more C.weaker D.stronger
29.A boy baby always receives the ________ from his father.
A.X-chromosome B.Y-chromosome C.X-X chromosome D.X-Y chromosome
30.The height of a child mostly depends on ________.
A.his mother B.his father C.his health D.his lifestyle
31.The underlined word “inherited” in Paragraph 1 means ________ in Chinese.
A.继承 B.改变 C.影响 D.改进
32.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE
A.A mother’s genes are usually more easily shown up.
B.A child’s traits are completely inherited from the father.
C.Your lifestyle also influences how you will look and feel.
D.Not only the weight but also the height of a child mostly depends on his father.
Maybe you know floods, earthquakes, sandstorms and so on. But have you heard of typhoons
Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.
How does a typhoon happen When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates (蒸发)into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into sky. Then cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles(圆圈)and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 metres a second, a typhoon begins.
A typhoon has two parts, one is called the “eye”. In the eye, the wind does not move so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. Here are the strongest winds and hardest rains.
Typhoons are very dangerous. In November this year, Typhoon Haiyan killed 5500 people in Philippines. More people are missing.
