If you walk through the streets of Rio de Janeiro(里约热内卢), Brazil, you'll immediately notice something wonderful about the city—the street art. All around the city the walls are covered in colorful graffiti (涂鸦) and bright paintings.
In the past, this street art was not allowed. But in 2009, the city passed a law allowing street art on personal buildings if the owner gives permission(许可). When Simon Beck creates artwork, he doesn’t use paints or pencils. Instead, he takes his snowshoes and compass (指南针) and walks to a wide-open area of fresh snow. He makes huge designs in the snow by walking and leaving footprints in different styles.
The idea to make a snow mural (雪地巨画) came to him in 2004 after a day of skiing in Savoie, France. Mr. Beck noticed an inviting area of fresh snow and thought it would be fun to draw a star in it. The result looked fantastic, especially when he watched it from above.
Since then, he has continued to make snow artwork each winter. If the new snowfall covers his artwork, Mr. Beck tries again. It doesn’t worry him that his work will disappear. After he has photographed his artwork, he’s ready to think about the next one. “I can make another drawing in the same place when the weather improves,” he says.
Mr. Beck often starts by drawing the design on paper. When he gets to the place, he starts in the center of the design. He then “draws” the primary lines while holding his compass to make sure he keeps walking straight. Next, he adds smaller lines, keeping track of their length by counting his footsteps. Finally, he fills in or “shades (画阴影)” some of the areas between the lines with more footsteps.
So far Mr. Beck has built a collection of photos to publish in his book Snow Art. He has also posted some of his photos on social media. His art started to get more attention. Companies began asking him to create snow artwork of their logos. Mr. Beck has been invited to make snow art all over the world, including Canada, the United States, Russia and China.
