Since my son went to college in Chicago, I made quarterly trips there for the next three years.
My friend George was a cook there and he knew many outstanding restaurants. One of them was a
Chinese restaurant called The Bird. It was owned and operated by Chef Benny Moy who happened
to be an old friend of George's.
The dishes Benny prepared were unique, and everything was in his mind when he was cooking.
Just by changing, adding or removing an ingredient or two, he could come up with an entirely new
dish.
As a fan of Chinese food, I was always attracted by its recipes. After a year went by, I finally
gathered the courage to ask Benny if I could spend a week learning cooking in his restaurant kitchen.
To my joy, he agreed readily.
I was very nervous the first day I showed up. But I didn't have to wait long to find out how I
would start. "Put on this jacket, go over to the stove and clean the two woks(锅) there," he said. I
was excited. What a beginning; I was allowed to clean the master's woks.
Then things just seemed to fall into place. Benny was very concentrated when he was doing
prep work or cooking. I would just follow him around, trying very hard not to get in his way.
Besides, I would talk into my hand-held recorder to document everything he did; in effect, I had all

his recipes. He had a teaching style that was all his own. And I just watched and learned everything
he did by heart.
At the end of the week, when my time in the kitchen was over, I came away feeling that I have
had the most exciting, unusual, unique cooking experiences. Plus, now I know how to cook Benny's

Robert Hayden was an African-American poet. He was best known for his poem Those Winter
Sundays, which was written in 1962. It describes the poet's memories of his father, narrating that
despite the distance between them, there was a kind of love, real and invisible, shown by the
father’s efforts to improve his son’s life. The poem shows how Hayden's view about his father's love
has changed, and that his understanding of it has actually gotten deeper as the years have gone by;
eventually the poet starts to appreciate the selflessness of these parental actions, while feeling a
sense of regret for not having ever thanked him for what he has done.
The main symbol in the poem is temperature. Imagery such as “blue-black cold” makes the
reader aware of the cold temperature. However, soon in the poem, it becomes warm and words such
as “fires burn” heighten this image. The difference in the temperature outside and inside the house
shows the author's relationship with his father.
Robert Hayden was born in Detroit, Michigan, in August,1913. As a noticeably small child with
poor eyesight, Hayden often found great comfort in literature, becoming fond of poetry. After
graduating from high school, he attended Detroit City College. Before long, he left college in 1936
to begin working for the Federal Writers’ Project (FWP). Hayden spent time there researching
African-American history and folk culture subjects that would inspire and influence his poetic work.
After marrying Erma Inez Morris in 1940, he published his first collection of poetry Heart- Shape in
the Dust in the same year.
Hayden returned to the University of Michigan for higher education after the publication of his
first book. W.H .Auden, a poet and professor, became a major influence on Hayden's work, guiding
him through matters of poetic form and technique. In his later years, Hayden continued to write and
publish poetry. In 1976,he became the first African American to serve as Poet Laureate(桂冠诗人).
28. What is the poem Those Winter Sundays about
A. The father-son relationship. B. The author's love for winters.
C. The family values in the 1960s. D. The life of African Americans.
29. What does the underlined word “heighten” mean in the second paragraph
A. charge. B. improve. C. record. D. pick.

It’s easy to believe that robots are stealing jobs from human workers and badly affect the job
market; after all, you’ve likely heard that they are tracking and moving packages without the use of
human hands.
But there’s no need to worry about a robot takeover just yet, says a new study from BYU
sociology professor Eric Dahlin. Dahlin's research found that robots aren't replacing humans at the
rate most people think, but people are likely to greatly overstate the rate of robot takeover.
To understand the relationship between job loss and robots, Dahlin surveyed nearly 2,000
people about their views on jobs being replaced by robots. They were first asked to guess what is the
percentage of workers whose bosses have replaced jobs with robots. They were then asked whether
their employers have ever replaced their jobs with robots.
The study found that only 14%of workers say they’ve seen their job replaced by a robot. But
those who have experienced job displacement due to a robot overstate the effect of robots taking jobs
from humans by about three times.
“Our understanding of robots taking over jobs is greatly exaggerated,” says Dahlin. Those who
haven’t lost jobs overstate it by about double, and those who have lost jobs overstate it by about
three times. Eye-catching headlines saying a bad future of employment have likely overblown the
situation of robots taking over jobs.
The finding fits early studies, which suggest that robots aren’t replacing workers. Rather,
workplaces, where both employees and robots are working together, deliver more value in a way.
“An everyday example is an autonomous machine at your local department store,” says Dahlin.
“This robot cleans the floors while employees clean under shelves or other difficult-to-reach places.”
32. How did Eric Dahlin carry out his research
A. By asking people questions. B. By comparing early studies.
C. By monitoring employers. D. By studying new businesses.
33. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. Bad effects of technology. B. A fall in laid-off workers.
C. Benefits of using robots. D. The finding of the study.
34. What might deepen people’s worry about robot takeover according to the text
A. Low pay. B. News reports.
C. Physical health. D. Fewer workplaces.
35. Which statement will Eric Dahlin probably agree with
A. Robots can work as human’s partners. B. Job markets will be affected seriously.
C. All human workers will be replaced. D. Work experience matters too much.

Jane Brown sat carefully putting papers into a folder. She had been at the Gateway Nature
Center’s office all morning and was tired of filing. She wanted desperately to work with the animals.
She had been a weekend volunteer that whole school year and had done extensive research, reading
books and websites on natural history. But her mom,who was the assistant director of the center, said
Jane was still too young.
Suddenly, the quiet was broken by Amy bursting in. She had been a volunteer a bit longer than
Jane and wandered around like she owned the place. “Hurry up, Jane,” she ordered. Jane willed
herself to remain still and just smiled back.
Just then, Jane’s mother rushed into the room with Mr.White, the manager. “The hurricane is
now approaching the Gulf Shore Preserve,” Mrs. Brown reported. “It needs help preparing for it. I
have to go down there with the staff. We’ll take the bridge, so we shouldn’t be gone long. I need you
girls to help Mr.White get the storm shutters (护窗) down in the aviary (鸟舍). Then, stay inside
with Mr. White. Call me on my cellphone if there’re any problems,” Mrs.Brown directed as she
rushed out. Jane was excited to have an opportunity to help the birds.
Amy announced she was now “in charge”. Jane smiled again, saying nothing. Mr. White and
the girls worked quickly and were soon back inside. But when Mr. White called Jane’s mother, a
worried expression crossed his face. “A storm has flooded the bridge, and they’re stuck there. Also,
the storm is heading our way,” he said. Amy was frightened. After silently considering for a few
seconds, Jane said calmly, “We should move the birds to the reptile house (爬行动物馆). It’s on
higher ground.” Mr. White and Amy nodded. They rushed out of the building. Once inside the aviary,
Jane watched Amy lunge(猛冲) from cage to cage.

One possible version:
Jane told Amy not to jump around so much because the birds would be scared by her sudden
movements. Amy calmed down, but she was trembling. Holding Amy’s hands, Jane comforted her:
“ Just think about the birds.” They carried each cage up to the reptile house. Some birds beat their
wings when they felt the wind. Jane spoke gently to them, and they soon grew calmer. Amy
watched in awe and tried to imitate her. Eventually, they finished relocating the birds. Tired and
worried, they waited inside the reptile house for the storm to stop.
After several hours, the storm stopped, and Mrs. Brown was able to return to the center. She
expressed great concern that she’d left them alone for so long, but Mr. White told her that Jane’s
cool thinking had saved the birds. Mrs. Brown cast a surprised look at her daughter. “How can you
be so confident and courageous ” She asked. Jane replied all she could think about was how
scared the birds must have felt in their cages, and she just took charge. Wearing a radiant smile,
Jane added she felt proud of herself.

M: Hello, everyone. Welcome back to Story Time, and this week we’re going to talk about
Margaret Fuller.
Margaret Fuller was born in 1810 in America. Up to the age of nine, her education was at
home, with her father. Margaret was an excellent student. In fact, by the age of six, she was
translating Latin poetry into English. By the age of ten, she was at school. And eventually, she
became a teacher.
So, why did she become so well known Well, she had very strong opinions about the role of
women and particularly about what jobs they could do. Margaret believed that a woman could do
any job that a man could do.
Later, she became a journalist. She worked for the New York Tribune and became its first
female editor. She also wrote reviews for it, as she was famous for having strong opinions about
literature. Some of the reviews she wrote were very sharp. As a result, she was not always popular
with novelists and poets of her time. Besides, she was interested in many different topics. For
example, she wanted to change people’s attitudes to Native Americans and African Americans.
She certainly tried to make the world a better place.
This is Tom, on 685 FM, saying good night.
