It may sound like the plot of a Disney movie, but Todd, a fox, really does think he’s a dog. The animal was tamed after being rescued as a 4-month-old baby and was raised as a pet by owner Emma D’ Sylva. Eating out seems to have been as popular 5,000 years ago as it is today, with archaeologists (考古学家) in Iraq uncovering an ancient tavern dating back to 2,700 BC. Researchers working in the ancient city of Lagash discovered that the pub, hidden just 19 inches below the surface, was split into an open-air dining area and a room containing benches, an oven, ancient food remains and even a 5,000-year-old “fridge”.
They initially found themselves in the open courtyard space, an area that was difficult to dig, being “open and exposed to the outdoors, “ according to Reed Goodman, an archaeologist from the University of Pennsylvania. The team then discovered the industrial-sized oven, an ancient “fridge” to keep food cool, and dozens of bowls, many containing fish remains, revealing the purpose of the courtyard to be an outdoor dining area.
Previous digs focused on religious architecture and understanding the elites(上层人士), but Holly Pittman, director of the Lagash Archaeological Project and curator of the Penn Museums Near East section, concentrated on non-elite areas during these latest digs to make people have a broader understanding of ancient cities. “Uncovering the tavern supports the perspective of Pittman and her team that society was not organized into just elites and enslaved people — the previous common view — but included an ancient middle class,“ Goodman said.

Bricks are one of the oldest known building materials, dating back thousands of years. But researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have found a new use for bricks: as energy storage units. A team of engineers and chemists have found a way to transform an ordinary house brick into a pseudo(伪) battery — allowing it to conduct and store electricity. The bricks are powerful enough to light an LED light bulb and cost only about $3 to make.
“I love the idea of adding value to things that are inexpensive, things that are affordable, things that we kind of take for granted,” said Julio D’Arcy, an assistant professor of chemistry at Washington University and one of the researchers on this project.
The brick battery relies on the red pigment(色素) known as iron oxide, or rust, that gives red bricks their color. The scientists pumped the bricks with several gases that react with iron oxide to produce a network of plastic fibers. These microscopic fibers coat the empty spaces inside the bricks — and conduct electricity.
“What we’re trying to do is: we’re trying to make specialized plastics that are only used on the nano(纳米) scale — where we use very little of the plastic, and we can actually insert that plastic inside construction materials.” The study is in the journal Nature Communications.
In the future, D’Arcy says, a brick wall could potentially serve a double purpose: providing structural support and storing electricity generated from renewable energy sources, such as solar panels.
The technology is still at least a few years away from being ready for the commercial market. And right now the energy storage capacity of the bricks is still pretty low — about 1 percent of a lithium(锂) battery. But the team is now testing ways to improve brick performance — because it looks like you can teach an old brick new tricks.

1. 内容认定要点

The series of hands-on courses offered last term turned out to be a great success. Talking of my favorite course, planting vegetables comes to my mind instantly. Thecourse provides a fantastic platform for me to get exposed to nature. By attending the classes, not only have I realized how tough yet rewarding the field labor is, but also I have developed strong teamwork spirit through the cooperation with my peers. Inorder to further promote its popularity, I suggest some voluntary activities be hosted, such as calling on students to help pick vegetables on the nearby farms.
Thanks to these labor practice courses, we are equipped with lots of invaluable knowledge and practical skills to better serve our life.
