Ice cream season is here! Let’s hope you have enough money for your favorite flavors. But have you ever thought about getting paid to eat ice cream
The idea isn’t pie in the sky. It’s how American Derek Spors, 32, makes his living. Although he simply calls himself a product developer at Ben and Jerry’s, an ice-cream company based in Vermont. His job is something delicious.
So how did he become an ice-cream expert in the first place Spors received a degree in food science from the University of Wisconsin. However, some research and development staff in the company come from culinary (厨师的) backgrounds.
This makes for a good mix. People with a food science background and those with a culinary background both know a lot about food, but the things they know are different. “In studying food science, you learn about food functionality, but you don’t really learn how to make it taste good.” Spors said. “To the consumer, it’s all about the taste.”
Great tastes are exactly what Spors spends his days inventing and perfecting.
So how is a new product developed According to Spors, the process has to begin with a new idea for a flavor. Next comes the formulation (配方) of “base” mixes. This lays the foundation (基础) for new flavors, which involves complex science. On top of all these chemical experiments, the mix has to taste good. Being an ice-cream inventor does have its own rewards-who wouldn’t want a chance to create a new ice cream flavor For Spors, it’s terrific to know his work makes others happy when he goes to the grocery store and sees someone buy ice cream he developed.
24. Which of the following is closest in meaning to “pie in the sky” in Paragraph 2
A. Unlikely. B. Simple. C. Unusual. D. Decent.
25. What is Spors’s job
A. Developing new markets. B. Inventing good tastes.
C. Making phone calls. D. Eating delicious food.
26. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. How to make ice cream taste good.
B. What helps make a good mix.
C. What Spors learned at university.
D. How others’ work helps Spors.
27. How does Spors feel about his job
A. It’s terrible. B. It’s awesome.
C. It’s tiring. D. It’s well-paid.

Ever wonder how this season’s celebrations affect the environment Guest blogger Krista Fairles takes an amusing look at this very topic.
The holidays are a wonderful, cheerful time when most people wait for Santa to bring them presents. But I’m not like most people. I spend my time wondering just what the environmental impacts of Santa Claus and his reindeer are, and more importantly, how I can calculate those impacts.
Lately I’ve been particularly curious as to whether Santa’s old sled is a clean green flying machine, or if he should be replacing his 8 reindeer with an environmentally-friendly car.
I should mention that, surprisingly, I was unable to find statistics specific to Santa’s magical flying reindeer, so these calculations use numbers from various sources and may not represent actual pollution caused by Santa and his animals. In other words, don’t complain to the govenment about the damage Santa is causing the environment based on this article.
Santa’s yearly trip around the globe is 44,000km long, twice the average of a North American driver. If we assume that the magic provides the altitude for this trip, then reindeer power only needs to push Santa’s sled forward. To complete the trip in 12 hours, I estimate they must travel at a speed of about 3100 km/h. To travel at this speed, for this length of time, the reindeer need to eat an incredible 980 million calories each!
So the next question is: how much food is in 980 million calories Well, if they’re eating corn, they’d need to eat 16, 500 lbs each-or 1.6 acres of food. Growing 12.8 acres of corn has its own implications for the environment that we’ll leave for another calculation.
We now need to consider that during the global trip the reindeer are “letting out” some of that corn in the form of methane. A resting cow produces 110 kg of methane per year, so flying reindeer would each let out about 4.8 tons. With methane causing 20 times the global warming damage of CO2, and the altitude increasing that damage by 1000% that another 20 times, we can put Santa’s round-trip emissions at 15,488 tons. This is much more than the 100 tons an environmentally-friendly car would release on the same trip!
Bad Santa.
28. According to Paragraph 6, how many acres of corn would Santa need to feed 10 reindeer
A. 1.6. B. 16. C. 12.8. D. 128.
29. Which of the following statements would the writer most probably agree with
A. Christmas celebrations are really a waste of money.
B. Vegetarians are more likely to survive than meat-eaters.
C. Raising animals has a negative influence on environment.
D. The car industry does less harm to environment than farming.
30.Which of the following words best describes the language style of the passage
A. Serious and boring. B. Cheerful and friendly.
C. Academic and formal. D. Humorous and concerned.
31. Which of the following is the best title for this passage
A. Is Santa driving clean and green
B. Santa, watch where you’re going!
C. Santa Claus is coming to town!
D. Let’s reduce waste on Christmas celebrations!

Around 1870, the world entered an era of sustained rapid technological development that was unlike anything that had happened before; each successive generation found itself living in a new world, utterly transformed from the world into which its parents had been born.
Brad DeLong, an economics professor at the University of California, argues that there are two great puzzles about this transformation in his forthcoming book “Slouching Towards Utopia.” The first is why this happened. DeLong thinks there were three great “meta-innovations”- innovations that enabled innovation itself: the rise of large corporations, the invention of the industrial research lab and globalization. The second is why all this technological progress hasn’t made society better than it has. One thing I had not fully realized until reading this book is the extent to which progress hasn’t brought felicity. Over the 140 years surveyed, there have been only two eras during which the Western world felt generally optimistic about the way things were going.
The first such era was the 40 or so years leading up to 1914, when people began to realize just how much progress was being made and started to take it for granted. Unfortunately, that era of optimism died in fire and blood, with technology enhancing rather than lessening the horror. The second era was the “30 glorious years”, the decades after World War II when social democracy(民主)-a market economy with its rough edges smoothed off by labour unions and a strong social safety net-seemed to be producing the most decent societies humanity had ever known. But that era, too, came to an end, partly in the face of economic setbacks and bitter politics.
It would be silly to say that the incredible progress of technology since 1870 has done nothing to improve things; in many ways, today’s average American has a far better life than the richest people of the Gilded Age. But the progress hasn’t made us satisfied or optimistic. DeLong offers some explanations for this disconnect. His book definitely asks the right questions and teaches us a lot of crucial history along the way.
32. What does Brad DeLong say about the transformation in his book
A. It brought about a better society.
B. It could be divided into three types.
C. It resulted from technological progress.
D. It inspired many commercial innovations.
33. What does the underlined word “felicity” mean in paragraph 2
A. Emotional satisfaction. B. Global development.
C. Social justice. D. Economic stability.
34. Which of the following words can best describe the two eras in paragraph 3
A. Unique but painful. B. Sweet but short-lived.
C. Glorious but violent. D. Democratic but long-lost.
35. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Benefits of Technology to Society
B. Technology Makes Us More Human
C. Technology and the Rise of Pessimism
D. How Technology Transformed Our Lives

The Champion Snorer (打鼾者)
It was the Cedar Rapids sleeper (卧铺车). Outside, it was as dark as the inside of an ink-bottle. In the sleeping car people slept. Or tried it. Some of them slept like Christian men and women, peacefully, sweetly and quietly. Others slept like demons (恶魔) as though it was their mission to keep everybody else awake.
____36____
We never heard anything snore like him. It was the most systematic snoring that was ever done, even on one of these tournaments of snoring, a sleeping car. ____37____ O, no! There was more cold-blooded magic in his system than that. He waited until everybody had had a taste of sleep, just to see how nice and pleasant it was; and then he broke in on their sound sleep like a winged, breathing demon, and they never knew what peace was again that night.
___38___ We all hoped it was an accident, however; and, trusting that he wouldn’t do it again, we all forgave him. Then he ruined our hopes and spoiled the sweet sincerity of our forgiveness by a long-drawn “Gw-a-h-h-hah!” that sounded too much like business to be accidental. ____39____ But the sleeper in "lower three” went on in long-drawn, regular rhythms that indicated good staying qualities, “Gwa-a-a-h! Gwa-a-a-h! Gahwayway! Gahway-wah! Gahwa-a-ah!”
Evidently it was going to last all night; and the exhausted heads dropped back on the sleepless pillows, and the scolding began. ____40____ He shot off an annoying “Gwook!” which sounded as though his nose had got mad at him and he continued to disappoint everybody with a guttural (似喉间发出的) “Gurroch!” Then he paused again for breath and when he had accumulated enough, he let out a more disturbing “Kowpff!” that nearly shot the roof off the sleeping car.
A. Pretty soon “lower three” gave us a little variation.
B. Then there was a pause, and he awakened from sleep and looked at us.
C. He didn’t begin as soon as the lamps were turned down and everybody was in bed.
D. Of these the man in lower number three was the worst.
E. Just as the other passengers had consulted together how they might stop him, morning dawned.
F. Then every head in the sleeping car was held off the pillow for a minute, waiting to hear the worst.
G. He started out with terrific “Gu-r-r-rt!” that opened every eye in the car.

Rick, a ten-year-old boy, was constantly angry at everything around him. He always fought in school with the other kids. Once he had an outburst in school. Upset by something a classmate said to him, he pushed the boy, and a fight happened. When the teacher stepped in to break it up, Rick went crazy, throwing papers and books around the classroom and rushing out. His teachers couldn’t say anything that would comfort the kid. And the parents of his schoolmates were getting concerned. Rick was earning quite the reputation. After talking with school officials, Rick’s mom tried everything she could to calm Rick down.
She tried different methods until one day she came home with a canvas (画布) and paint. “What’s this ”, Rick asked. Rick’s mom handed over the painting equipment and said, “Whenever you feel angry, paint whatever you’re angry about instead of bursting out.” Rick wasn’t that happy about it but he gave it a try anyway. Over the next few weeks, the young boy created several artworks. They mostly showed disturbing images though. So his mom took all of the paintings and called Rick over so that they could talk about them. “Tell me, Rick. What are these paintings about ”
“Well, the first painting is about how some of the kids show off their new clothes and pencil cases. The next painting is about my teacher who keeps telling me about how I’m doing things wrong. And the last painting is about how one of my schoolmate’s father suggested that I change my attitude. All of them make me so angry.” Rick’s mom, in a calm voice, took Rick by her side and told him: “Don’t you see it, Rick ” “See what ” Rick asked. “You’re so angry at all of these things but not once did you try to understand why you’re getting so angry. What have all these people done to you, really ”

Dear Schoolmates,
Volunteering is playing a crucial role in students’ overall development. With the
approach of summer vacation, it’s high time that we took up volunteering.
A willing heart to volunteer provides us with massive benefits. Volunteering not
only makes us feel connected with the community but also is beneficial to our
well-being. Blessed with a sense of purpose in life, we are offered an amazing
opportunity to learn valuable skills.
There are different ways of serving people, ranging from volunteering at
children’s home or libraries to virtual volunteering, helping pupils with schoolwork
online, or promoting intangible heritage of Wu Culture.
Why not throw ourselves into volunteering It makes us a better person and
creates a better world.
Yours Sincerely,
Li Hua
67. Possible version:
Rick was lost in thought. It slowly dawned on him that people he was angry at
had done nothing wrong. His classmates who showed their new clothes and pencil
cases to others might just want to share their happiness with friends. His teacher did
blame him because he was being a problem. And his schoolmate’s father was just
trying to help him correct his mistakes. They had no intention to hurt him but he just
let his unreasonable anger consume him and hurt them. How ridiculous he had been!
Rick knew it was time to change. From then on, Rick tried his best to control
his temper. Every time he felt he was to explode, he would walk away and ask
himself why he was angry and whether it was reasonable to be angry. Then he would

find his peace and laughed his anger away. Gradually, everyone saw a different Rick.
He no longer shouted at others or threw things away. He chatted with classmates
after class and complimented their new clothes and pencil cases. He even helped
teachers carry books before class sometimes. Rick’s change surprised everyone and
they all felt happy for him.

Text 1
W: Did you catch any of the snowboarding events this winter
M: Don’t get me started. Besides figure skating and speed skating, snowboarding is
another sport that attracts me.
Text 2
W: George, look at the long waiting line. I am glad you have booked a table.
M: I guess it is because the dishes here are cheap and delicious.
W: I think so.
Text 3
M: What do you think of Mr. Johnson’s presentation
W: It was far beyond my expectation. I never thought he was such a persuasive
speaker.
Text 4
M: I’ve received this month’s gas bill of 20 dollars and electricity bill of 25 dollars.
W: The three of us share the apartment and we will share the total cost equally.
M: OK. That’s fair.
Text 5
M: There is an oil painting exhibition at the national gallery. And John will go there
with me after he has his teeth examined. Care to join us
W: I’d love to. But I had a flat tire just now. I’m afraid I have to have it checked.
Text 6
M: So, shall we pay for another year’s family membership
W: Of course! I’d like to carry on playing badminton and you enjoy swimming. It’s
a nice thing to do after work, isn’t it
M: I agree. And maybe we should have our meal earlier in the evening rather than so
late at night. What do you think
W: It’s worth trying. We’re always hungry after the gym.
M: And it’s not good to go to bed with a full stomach. But we can’t stay up too late,
because we’ve both got to get up so early for work every day.

That way you can stop and explore as much as you want in each neighborhood for

M: Great.
W: A lot of touristsprefer this option. It’s a good deal too. Instead of paying $2 per

been gaining some steam. Could you tell our audience about it
W: Sure. It is a project I created in 2017. You see, there are many retired teachers out
there. Oncea teacher, always a teacher. I wanted to find a way to make them
available online for children around the world.
M: So, how does The School in the Cloudwork
W: It is quite simple. In the self-organized learning classrooms, students are given a
big question. They choose their own groups and can change groups anytime. Groups
are expected to present what they have learned at the end of each session.
M: Have you come across any challenges
W: Quite often, in fact. We’ve had problems with sound or vision, or even both. And
we have to try communication by text. There is also no guarantee that the Internet
will always work.In some areas there are shortages of proper equipment.
M: Now Gigi, some of our viewers posted questions for you on our website. It
seems quite a few of them are looking to join your project.
W: Really Well, I’d like to say “welcome aboard” to them all.
Text 10
In Canada, a local program was set up, which has benefited both elderly people and
students.
Linda Jones, who used to be a nurse, is 99 years old now. She felt lonely because her
children couldn’t keep her company.Recently, she signed up for a local program
connecting elderly people with young people. Linda and 17-year-old Jessy Brown
formed a pair because Jessy Brown is also interested in the nursing work. Linda’s
life story as a nurse isinspiring Brown, who also wants to become a nurse.
For the high school students involved in the program, the time spent with elderly
people can be used toward volunteer work which is needed for graduation. They are
supposed to speak for 30 minutes with elderly people each week.
The program has been a good fortune to both elderly people and high school
students.Due to various reasons, elderly people can’t meet their families and
students are having trouble getting their volunteer hours. Therefore, there has been a
huge positive response fromboth of them.
