Hong Kong is among the cities which have the largest populations in the world, but with night skies around 1,000 times brighter than globally accepted levels, it gains a bad reputation(名声) for its light pollution.
A study by Hong Kong University found that brightness levels in the southern Chinese city's popular shopping district of Tsim Sha Tsui were 1,200 times greater than the international dark sky standard.
The crowded city of 7 million people, full of residential(住宅的) high-rises, towering office blocks and neon(霓虹灯) advertisements has no laws to control outdoor lightning.
The result is that light pollution is thought to be much worse than in other large cities, including London, Sydney, Tokyo and Shanghai.
“In Hong Kong, you can't go anywhere outdoor in the evening without your eyes being blinded by this really upsetting outdoor lightning,” the light pollution survey's head Jason Pum told AFP.
“The fact that we have all this light in the sky means energy is wasted,” he said, adding that too much artificial lightning also affects nightly wildlife.
Research has suggested that light pollution can cause a number of harmful health problems in humans, including sleeplessness and headaches and can also affect body clocks and hormones(荷尔蒙).
The university's survey, the result of five million measurements taken from points across the city, was released just days before the start of the yearly Earth Hour event, organized by the World Wildlife Fund.
People around the world will be encouraged to turn off the lights for an hour on Saturday night to advertise climate change. Last year, a number of Hong Kong's major buildings along Victoria Harbour went dark to mark Earth Hour.
“Anyway, we should do our best to reduce the amount of lightning and suit it to the benefit of the environment.”

A.neon advertisements B.residential buildings
C.a dark sky with many stars D.high office blocks

A.Earth Hour is simply organized to reduce pollution. B.light pollution is the biggest problem in Hong Kong.

27.What will the author probably discuss after the last paragraph
A.Ways to reduce light pollution B.Causes of light pollution
C.Worries about light pollution D.Bad effects of light pollution

My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it. But at that time, I didn’t understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
Unfortunately, in early May, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips, so she couldn’t take care of the garden. I didn’t want my father to worry, so I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often, so I didn’t think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let’s have a salad today!” I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!
I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest store to buy some vegetables.
When I gave the salad to him, he said, “Oh, Christine, what a beautiful salad! I can’t believe the carrots are this big already. You must be taking very good care of my garden.” I felt a little bit guilty.
Coming home, my mother saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen. I was embarrassed and I admitted, “Dad wanted a salad, but the garden was a disaster. I didn’t want to disappoint him, so I went to the store.” She laughed but promised to help me in the garden and weeks later I was finally able to pick some.
I carefully made a salad and took it to my father. He looked at it with a hint of a smile. “Christine, the carrots are smaller in this salad, but they taste better.”
Now, I better understand how putting a lot of effort into caring for something can help you appreciate the results more, however small they may be. Perhaps this was one of the reasons for my father’s love of gardening.
28.Why did Christine originally promise she would do the gardening
A.She was asked by her father to do it.
B.She was interested in growing vegetables.
C.She knew it was important to her father.
D.She wanted to improve her gardening skills.
29.Which of the following was a problem in the garden
A.Insects destroyed the lettuce and carrots.
B.Animals often dug holes in the garden.
C.The plants were given too much water.
D.The vegetables were marked incorrectly.
30.Why could Christine secretly make the salad from store-bought vegetables
A.Her mother helped her to buy the vegetables.
B.Her mother regularly helped her to make a spray.
C.Her father couldn’t see the garden’s progress.
D.Her father went on a business trip at that time.
31.What did Christine learn through her experience of gardening
A.Always get ready for a rainy day.
B.Don’t be disappointed by bugs.
C.Working alone produces results.
D.Hard work can often be rewarding.
D
Men hunted. Women gathered. That has long been the common view of our prehistoric ancestors. But the discovery of a woman buried 9000 years ago in the Andes Mountains with weapons and hunting tools, and an analysis of other burial sites in the Americas challenges this widely accepted division of labor in hunter-gatherer society.
“Labor practices among recent hunter-gatherer societies are highly gendered, which might lead some to believe that sexist inequalities in things like pay or rank are somehow 'natural' , ”said lead study author Randy Haas, an assistant professor of anthropology (人类学) at University of California, Davis, in a news release. "But it's now clear that sexual division of labor was fundamentally different-likely more equal and reasonable-in our species deep hunter-gatherer past."
The burial site was discovered in 2018 during excavations (发掘) at a high-altitude site called Wilamaya Patjxa in what is now Peru. The woman, thought to be between 17 and 19 years old when she died, was buried with items that suggested she hunted big-game animals.
Although some scholars have suggested a role for women in ancient hunting, others have dismissed this idea even when hunting tools were uncovered in female burials. To examine whether this woman found at this site was an outlier, the researchers examined 429 skeletons (骷髅) at 107 burials sites in North and South America around 8000 to 14000 years ago. Of those, 27 individuals were buried with hunting tools—11 were female and 15 were male. The sample was sufficient to "support the conclusion that female participation in early big-game hunting was likely not unusual".
The findings add to doubts about man — the hunter assumption that informed much thinking about early humans since the mid-20th century. “They suggest hunting was very much a community-based activity, needing the participation of all able-bodied individuals to drive large animals”, the paper said. The weapon of choice at that time had low accuracy, encouraging broad participation, and using it was a skill learned from childhood.
32.What does the recent burial site at Andes Mountains show
A.The origin of sexual inequality.
B.Hunting skills of ancient times.
C.The social system of prehistoric hunters.
D.Job division of hunter-gatherer society.
33.Which of the following might Randy Haas agree with
A.Gender plays no part in recent hunter-gatherer society.
B.Sexist inequality is a natural result of prehistoric society.
C.Ancient division of labor might be fairer than we'd thought.
D.Public ideas of women's role will be changed abruptly.
34.What does the underlined word "outlier" in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Exception. B.Failure.
C.Role model. D.Easy target.
35.What might make prehistoric hunting a community-based activity
A.Lack of able-bodied individuals.
B.Imperfection in hunting weapons.
C.Better accuracy of females in hunting.
D.Need for large animals as food source.

M: Books have always been an important part of people's lives. Libraries were important parts of both universities and town centers, and many of the first successful companies in modern times made their money by selling books. Like newspapers, publishers used to have a lot of power and influence, but nowadays, the companies that control digital information seem to have taken over. In particular, e-books have replaced traditional books for most modern readers, especially in big cities, for whom everything has to be easy to carry and convenient to use. Tech companies like Amazon and Apple sell “e-readers” that can contain thousands of books, and their online stores list millions of titles, far more than any bookstore could ever hold. As more and more people buy computers, smart phones, and tablets, the market for e-books continues to grow. Many traditional book publishers and bookstores have gone out of business. For example, Border's Group used to be one of the largest bookstores in the United States, with more than 600 locations and billions of dollars in sales every year. But after e-books appeared, they started losing money and had to close all their stores.

根据第六段的 “The fact that we have all this light in the sky means energy is wasted.”可知,在天空中存在的这些灯光是能源上的浪费,故A是正确的;另外 “adding that too much artificial lightning also affects nightly wildlife.”可以看出,太多的人靠光也会影响野生的动植物,故C是正确的;又因第七段的 “Research has suggested that light pollution can cause a number of harmful health effects in humans”可知,研究显示,光污染也导致了大量的对人体产生危害的因素,故D是正确的;而B选项It can make the city more beautiful at night.
根据第一段的 “Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated (人口密集的)cities in the world, but with night skies around 1,000 times brighter than globally accepted levels, it gains a bad reputation for its light pollution.” The result is that light pollution is thought to be much worse than in other large cities, including London, Sydney, Tokyo and Shanghai.
根据最后一段的 “Anyway, we should do our best to reduce the amount of lightning and adjust it for the benefit of the environment.”

根据第二段中“But it's now clear that sexual division of labor was fundamentally different-likely more equal and reasonable-in our species deep hunter-gatherer past. (但现在很清楚,在我们的狩猎-采集历史中,性别分工有着根本的不同,可能更为平等和合理)”可知,Randy Haas认为古代的劳动分工可能比我们想的更公平,故选C。

Of those, 27 individuals were buried with hunting tools—11 were female and 15 were male. The sample was sufficient to "support the conclusion that female participation in early big-game hunting was likely not unusual".
根据最后一段中“The weapon of choice at that time had low accuracy, encouraging broad participation, and using it was a skill learned from childhood. (当时选择的武器准确度低,鼓励广泛参与,使用它是从小就要学的技能)”可知,狩猎武器的不完善,所以就鼓励大家广泛参与,也就使史前的狩猎活动以群体为基础,故选B。

She notes that the nutrient is protective in many ways and h key for mental health. 那么A项Get your vitamins(补充维生素)满足本段段意。故选A。

Senior High School Students’ Staying Up
According to a survey, senior high school students’ average time of sleeping every day is far less than the required sleeping time. There are many reasons behind this phenomenon.
Some students stay up to do their homework and study, while there are still some teenagers using their sleeping time to chat online, play computer games and watch TV plays.
Lack of sleep can cause many health problems, so I think we should strengthen self-discipline and time management, ensure enough sleep, and make sure that we study energetically during the day.

When Daniela’s uncle saw her crying, he got a shock. He comforted her at first, then asked the reason. Once knowing Daniela’s problem, he tried to persuade her to understand her parents. Daniela interrupted, “They still see me as a baby! They’re too old-fashioned!” “Ok,” her uncle agreed, but asked her to rethink, “You’d better ask them why they’re always on your neck, and you will see they really give you the best.”
Hearing her uncle’s words, Daniela fell into deep thought. She went back home with her uncle company. Her parents waited at the door anxiously. Her father said, “I always lacked my parents’ love. So we tried our best to love you, instructing you to read books and monitoring your circle of friends, because these may decide your future life. But we failed to consider your feeling. Sorry, my daughter! Please understand us!” Touched by these words, Daniela hugged her parents and promised she would be the good girl they wanted her to be.
