Many little girls like flowers, watching butterflies and riding small horses.A lot of them also like cars, robots and spaceships. But most girls’ clothing only has pictures of flowers, butterflies or horses.
Two mothers decided to make clothes that include all the things that little girls do and love.
Six-year-old Bella loves to play with cars.So her dress has pictures of cars on it.
“We haven’t found this type of dress in the store,” Cathy,Bella’s mother, says.
The car dress is from a new girl’s clothing line called Princess Awesome.Rebecca Melsky set up the business. She says its products for girls have some designs normally found on boys’ clothes.
It all started two years ago when Rebecca was hoping to buy clothing for her two-year-old daughter, who liked robots, trucks and spaceships.
“One day when I walked through a girls’ store,I thought to myself I wished they’d make one of those beautiful dresses that also had a robot on it because she would love that. And I thought someone should do that.Maybe I should do that,” Rebecca said.
Her friend Eva St.Clair believed she should, and their business was born. The women sold the first 70 dresses they made at a market. So they decided to expand their business online.Their products sold very well there, too.
“They sold out so fast that I could not make them fast enough. We decided it was time to think about a factory,” Rebecca said.
So they started to raise money from people over the Internet. The women raised more than $215,000 within days, far more than the $35,000 they expected.
“Our biggest problem is going to be how we expand as rapidly as people seem to want us to,” Rebecca said.
The women hope Princess Awesome will expand into products for girls of all ages and all interests.

I was on the phone with a friend when she said that she had not been hugged for months.Sensing her sadness,I drove 12 hours to give her a hug.I could feel this hug restored(恢复) her trust in humanity. She was ready to live again. This simple act of kindness had the ability to restore life. How many others out there wanted love in the form of a hug Thus, the hug campaign was born.
I printed leaflets(传单) with words of inspiration and handed them out while giving hugs at the Santa Monica Promenade.Every Saturday and Sunday,I stood holding a sign, inviting people with a smile. At first,I was frightened of offering strangers hugs, and it was a personal challenge for me to overcome my own fear. But once I overcame it,the rest was magic.
I have learnt a lot about people through my hug campaign.I have learnt to read people in much the same way as I would read a book.I started to find out who would be most likely to receive a hug,who would need some time to warm up before accepting a hug,and who would look at me with disgust and hurriedly walked away as if I were giving them poison.
There was a gentleman who walked back and forth, looking at me first with disgust, then with interest, and then with fear.Upon the fifth time he passed my station,he finally walked slowly in my direction and stood waiting for me to meet him.I went slowly not to scare him off,and I stretched(张开) my arms out hoping he would meet mine.He did.We stood in an awkward(笨拙的) hug,and then he rushed off never looking backwards.
There was a homeless man in a wheelchair who asked for a leaflet but said I did not have to hug him,as he had not showered for some time.I told him it didn’t matter. He looked at me amazedly as if to say,“Really ” The world had been cruel, and he was used to being walked away from.I bent down and held him close and told him he was loved.

Email has brought the art of letter writing back to life, but some experts think the resulting spread of bad English does more harm than good.
Email is a form of communication that is changing, for the worse, the way we write and use language, say some communication researchers. It is also changing the way we communicate and build relationship. These are a few of the recently recognised features of email, say experts, which should cause individuals(个人) and organisations to rethink the way they use email.
“Email has increased the spread of careless writing habits,” says Naomi Baron,a professor of linguistics(语言学) at an American university. She says the poor spelling, grammar, punctuation(标点符号) and sentence structure of email reflect a growing unconcern about the way we write.
Baron argues that we shouldn’t forgive and forget the poor writing often shown in email.“The more we use email and its tasteless writing, the more it becomes the normal way of writing,” the professor says.
Others say that despite its poor writing, email has finished what several generations of English teachers couldn’t: it has made writing fashionable again.
“Email is a critical(关键性的) new communication technology,” says Ian Lancashire,a professor of English at Toronto University.“It fills the gap between spoken language and the formal methods of writing that existed before email. It is the purest form of written speech.”
Lancashire says email has the mysterious ability to get people who are usually scared by writing to get their thoughts flowing easily onto a blank screen. He says this is because of email’s close similarity to speech.“It’s like a circle of four or five people around a campfire,” he says.
Still,he accepts that this new-found freedom to express themselves often gets people into trouble.Emails sent in a day almost exceed(超过) the number of letters mailed in a year. But more people are recognising the content of a typical email message is not often exact.
32.From what Baron says in the third paragraph we can see that .
A.careless people use email more than careful people
B.email requires people to change their native language
C.professors in universities don’t need to use email
D.people communicate by email with many mistakes
33.Which of the following is NOT true about email according to the passage
A.It is changing the way of communication.
B.It is used more than letters in the US.
C.It helps us write better.
D.It makes writing popular again.
34.In Lancashire’s opinion,email is a wonderful technology because .
A.it can be useful all over the world
B.it is the fastest way to communicate
C.we can express ourselves in a free way
D.we can save a lot of paper
35.This passage mainly shows us that .
A.people should stop using email to communicate
B.experts hold different opinions about email writing
C.Americans only use email to communicate
D.email makes people lose interest in English

Maybe you are an average student. 36 This is not necessarily so,however.Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to.Here’s how.
Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do.After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time.First, your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 37 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realise what is happening to your time.

Make good use of your time in class. 38 Listening carefully in class means less work later.Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home from school,go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day and read that material. 39 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learnt about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test,so don’t be over worried.
40 You will probably discover them after you have tried these.
A.There are other methods that might help you with your studying.

Alice is an ordinary woman with an amazing heart. One day,she was flying from Tampa to Hawaii for a meeting. Her boyfriend,Rico, came to see her off. When they slowly made it to the safety check, they noticed the airport security(安保人员) was asking a young lady to drop a package into the litter bin before she was boarding her plane.
The lady begged to place the package in Lost and Found Department instead of throwing it away.Sadly,it was not allowed. The lady, after much begging, finally dropped her package and was heading to her gate.Alice, after realising the lady was nearly in tears, knew something was wrong. Then,it was her turn to pass through security.
While hugging Rico goodbye, she asked him to quietly go through the litter bin and pick up the deserted(丢弃的) package to see what was inside of it.Alice was truly trying to help the lady.
After waving goodbye to his girlfriend,Rico went straight to the litter bin to get the package.
As soon as her plane landed,Alice called Rico about the package and was told that in it was a snow globe(水晶球) with a picture of the young lady in the airport. On the base were the words “We love you,Katie.Grandma and Grandpa.” Alice immediately realised that the snow globe was far from ordinary. They should do something to return it.
Alice did the only thing that came to mind:asking for the help of strangers online.
One day,Katie heard a knock on the door.

(Text 10)
M:Hi,I’d like to talk to the manager about something.I have to travel every day from Souk Road to the airport.Only the No.16 bus travels along this road.Your timetable is there. It shows that there are buses from Souk Road to the airport every ten minutes. If this is so,why do I have to wait half an hour for a bus nearly every day The rules say that if there are empty seats on a bus, they just stop at every stop where people are waiting. Why is it,therefore, that half-empty buses go straight past me when I am standing at the bus stop The rules say that no bus may carry more than 40 seated passengers and 20 standing passengers.Yesterday I was the first to get off the bus when I reached the airport.I counted the other passengers as they got off. There were 129 of them.Clearly printed on the back of every bus is a sign that says “Highest speed:50 mph.” The distance from Souk Road to Kai Tak is 12 miles. On Saturday morning a No.49 bus travelled this distance in 10 minutes. At times,it must have done at least 80 or 90 mph.It is obvious that our bus companies have no respect for the rules or consideration for the passengers. Can nothing be done about this

第一节
Dear Jim,
I am sorry to hear that you feel so nervous before the coming exam that you can’t sleep well at night. Don’t worry and I’m writing to give you some suggestions.
First,it’s necessary to make careful plans before exams to master what you have learnt completely, which will help you build up your confidence.Second, you’d better do proper exercise regularly, which will help you keep healthy and energetic.Last, don’t stay up late studying.Drinking a glass of milk before you go to bed can improve your sleep.
I hope my suggestions can help you reduce the pressure of exams and perform well in them.
Yours,
Zhang Ming
第二节
Alice did the only thing that came to mind:asking for the help of strangers online. She asked them to spread the story of the package. But after she came back from Hawaii, there were still no answers. She felt very anxious. Then she posted the picture on the snow globe with a picture of the young lady in the airport online and told more friends about it.She was waiting for the reply with anxiety. At last,a stranger told her about the address of the young lady. She felt relieved at the moment. Then she told the good news to Rico and made a decision that they would give the package to the lady in person.
One day,Katie heard a knock on the door.It was a young girl named Alice and a young man named Rico, with a big smile on their faces. After the young girl told her about their visit,Katie was so moved that she burst into tears. She told Alice and Rico that the snow globe was the most precious gift that her grandma and grandpa left to her.She expressed her deep gratitude to Alice and her boyfriend for their action.Without their kindness, she would have lost the gift forever.
