The American poet Louise Glück, author of 12 collections of poetry, has, been awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature. Born in New York in 1943, Glück published her first volume of poetry, "Firstborn", in 1968, quickly gaining her reputation as a poet, In the decades since, she has become one of the country's most celebrated literary figures. Her work uses the power of myth to deal with some of our darkest human concerns. Her straightforward language always gets at the heart of deep-seated anxieties: loneliness, rejection, death...
Stephanic Burt, an English professor at Harvard University, said, "She's someone who's been able to make emotion states vivid on the page... Few poets have tried as hard as she has not to repeat herself. And her strongest books are really different from one another". "She offers poetry lovers a lot of inspiration, but she's also on a lot of bookshelves," said Chiasson, a poet, who added she is a generous reader of her fellow writers' work.
At Yale, where Glück is a professor of English, she served for years as judge of the Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize and worked closely with poets she chose for the prize and those she did not, helping them shape their work. "In that very practical way she's had an enormous influence on a great many figures," said Langdon Hammer, a professor of English at Yale. "She's someone who has been a 'guiding spirit' for generations of students, writers, and readers." Glück described teaching and writing as symbiotic(共生关系)." I teach not out of selflessness or generosity: I do it because it feeds me," she said. "It feeds them, too, so it's a happy relationship. I’m sure not all my students feel that way, but some do. I never feel that it takes me from my work: I think it gives me my work."

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his plans for achieving net-zero emissions(排放)in Canada by 2050. His party subscribed a bill that would require the government to create new targets and a plan on how it will achieve those targets, every five years between 2030-2050. It would also have to regularly report on its progress towards those goals.
Canada is one of nearly 200 countries that has signed onto the Paris climate agreement. Signatories promise to achieve net-zero emissions beginning at some point between 2050 and -zero means that all emissions produced are absorbed through plants and trees or buried through carbon-capture technology.
Countries must also report on their progress every five years under the agreement. Mr. Trudeau's bill, which was subscribed on Thursday, formalizes this reporting requirement and forces the government to set regular goals. Greenhouse gases have hit record lows because of the pandemic-induced(大流行病引起的)economic slowdown. US emissions dropped by 9.2% this year.
The bill does not provide any kind of enforcement mechanism(机制)or attach any additional spending to achieve its goals. The bill also does not detail how the country will meet its five-year targets. It simply says the government will be required to come up with a plan.
"Canada is a wonderful country, but it didn't happen by accident and won't continued without effort, "Mr. Trudeau said. He made climate action a goal during his 2019 election cam paign.
Canada has failed to meet its environmental targets in the past. Under the Paris Agreement, Canada is supposed to reduce its emissions by 30%by 2030. The country will miss its 2020 target and is on track to miss its 2025 target.

D. Find new ways, to reduce pollution.
30. Why have greenhouse gases hit record lows
A. Countries all met their targets.
B. More advanced techniques were used.
C. Economy around the world slowed down.
D. People cared more about protecting the environment.
31. What can we learn about Canada from the last paragraph
A. It will reduce its emissions by 30%.
B. It sets too high environmental targets.
C. It may not meet its environmental targets in the following years.
D. It doesn't try to achieve its environmental targets.

Given how valuable intelligence and automation are, we will continue to improve our technology if we are at all able to. At a certain point, we will build machines that are smarter than we are. Once we have machines that are smarter than we are, they will begin to improve themselves. The concern is really that we will build machines that are much more competent than we are. And the slightest divergence(分歧)between their goals and our own could destroy us.
Just think about how we relate to ants. We don't hate them. We don't go out of our way to harm them. In fact, sometimes we take pains not to harm them. We step over them on the sidewalk. But whenever their presence seriously conflicts with one of our goals, we will kill them without hesitation. The concern is that we will one day build machines that, whether they're conscious or not, could treat us with similar disregard.
The bare fact is that we will continue to improve our intelligent machines. We have problems that we desperately need to solve. So we will do this, if we can. The train is already out of the station, and there's no brake to pull. If we build machines that are more intelligent than we are, they will very likely develop in ways that we can't imagine, and transcend us in ways that we can't imagine.
So imagine we hit upon a design of super intelligent AI that has no safety concerns. This machine would be the perfect labor-saving device. It can design the machine that can build the machine which can do any physical work, powered by sunlight, more or less for the cost of raw materials. So we're talking about the end of human labor. We' re also talking about the end of most intellectual work. So what would apes like ourselves do in these circumstances
But the moment we admit that information processing is the source of intelligence, we have to admit that we are in the process of building some sort of god. Now would be a good ti me to make sure it's a god we can live with.
32. Why does the author mention ants in Paragraph 2
A. To compare intelligent machines to ants.
B. To show improved machines will get away from us.
C. To stress the presence of machines does conflict with our goals.
D. To explain future intelligent machines could treat us without mercy.
33. What does the underlined word "transcend"in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Disable. B. Inspire. C. Disappoint. D. Outpace.
34. How is the passage mainly developed
A. By making comparisons.
B. By giving assumptions.
C. By showing valid evidence.
D. By analyzing statistics.
35. Which of the following statements can best summarize the author's viewpoint toward AI
A. Human beings will no doubt be destroyed by AI in the future.
B. Super intelligent AI will put an end to human labor eventually.
C. We should keep the development of AI within humans' control.
D. Human beings should stop the development of super intelligent AI.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

There have been several incidents in recent years where people died because of unsafe crowd conditions and stampedes(人群的蜂拥), the latest one unfolding in Seoul, South Korea, with at least 155 deaths reported. This may leave some people thinking there's little you can do to survive a stampede. 36 But crowd-safety experts say there are several strategies that could help you avoid a potentially deadly outcome. Consider these steps below.
The key to staying safe in a crowd begins as soon as you arrive at the location, says Randy Atlas, a safety consultant based in Fort Lauderdale. 37 It's a piece of common sense advice that Atlas applies not just at big events, but even when entering almost any room.
If there's a sudden panic and crowds begin to push in a certain direction, your instinct(本能)may be to fight back and push the opposite way. 38 If you go against the flow, you increase your chances of getting tripped and knocked down. Another risk, according to experts: If you fight the crowd, you will tire yourself out quickly in a situation where energy is needed.
As you move forward with the crowd, it's best to move in a diagonal(对角线的)direction so you can potentially angle your way out of the situation. The goal is to get to the edge of the stampede where it's less likely that you'll end up stuck at a choke-point, like a doorway.
39 Look for a solid structure to stand behind such as a pillar or a wall. Other places to duck: behind a car or even a lamp post.
In many stampede events, people die simply because they are crushed to the point they can't breathe. But a possible way to avoid this is to place your arms in front of you, almost in ad boxer-like position. That could give you some very valuable breathing room, literally. 40
A. To shelter yourself is, indeed, another potential way.
B. But that could be a big mistake, Atlas warns.
C. In this case, you don't necessarily have to wait and let time slip by.
D. Namely, to take note of where the nearest exits are.
E. It's simple, but surprisingly effective and possibly life-saving.
F. Furthermore, events like Halloween gathering, are likely to turn deadly.
G. Indeed, it's a frightening situation and circumstances may make it impossible to escape.

第二节(满分25分)

Twenty years ago, Chase Poust was only 7. On Sunday morning just before the Memorial Day, he, his dad Steven, and his 4-year-old sister, Abigail, were out for a family boating trip on Florida's St. Johns River, which was trackless and almost nobody knew about it. And there's no rescue center nearby. Chase and Abigail were swimming at the back of the anchored boat while Steven was on deck(甲板)fishing.
It was a perfect outing-it was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the deep blue sky, the light green river water and the mild late May sunshine mixed to create a magic scene. Everything was sound until a strong current emerged and loosened Abigail's grasp and she let go of the boat. Instantly realizing his sister would be swept away, Chase let go of the boat as well to try and reach her. At the same time, Chase screamed at his father desperately.
Without thinking twice, Steven jumped into the water and swam towards the two kids with all his efforts. But after realizing he couldn't keep up with both kids, he was faced with a heartbroken decision. He told them he loved them very much because he wasn't sure what's going to happen. Steven tried his best to stick with both of his children. He wore himself out. But his little daughter was washed away from him. Directing Chase to swim to shore for help Steven stayed behind, keeping as close as he could to Abigail as the life-vest that was keeping her above the waves floated further and further from his reach.
It was a tough go for the 7-year-old, but rather than attempting to swim all out, Chase wisely paced himself. Stopping to float or dog paddle when he was tired, he'd rest and then set off again. The current was going the opposite way of going to the boat and the shore, so it was very hard to swim that way for Chase.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
An hour later, Chase swam to the shore, anyhow.
