Mother had just taken her temperature —and it’s over 38℃ . She’d got the illness that’s going around.
It’s right after lunch. The older children were at school, and the baby was sleeping. There’s no reason why Mother could not go to bed. But she had a few things to do first. Mix the meat loaf for dinner. Leave a note for the cleaners. Find someone to serve coffee for her at the meeting tonight. Put in the next load of washing. Carry out the garbage.
At last, she sank into bed. Ah-h-h-h- ! Her aching legs felt comfortable from the cool sheets. Her burning eyes closed. She felt asleep fast!
Then, suddenly the front door banged open as the children burst home from school. “Mum! Mum! Where are you ” Mother tried to answer but their cries drowned out her weak calls. Soon they found her in bed.
“Didn’t you even get up yet ” cried the younger girl.
“How am I going to get to Bill’s ” asked the little boy.
“What about dinner We’ve got to eat,” said the older girl.
Mother understood. She knew that the children were not used to a mother in bed. “I’m sick,” she said. “I can’t do anything. I’ll just have to leave it all to you. She sighed. “Cook the potatoes ... take care of the baby ... set the table.”
The children ignored her words and dashed off like soldiers going into battle. For a time Mother was left to the quiet of her room and the ache in her head.
Then Father came home. He came into the bedroom, dropped heavily on the side of the bed and reached for her hand. “What’s wrong with you, Darling ” Father asked. He looked tired. Mother started worrying about him. “It’s nothing—just this illness that’s going around,” she said. “I can get up and do dinner and...”
Father shook his head. “You stay right here. Don’t worry about anything. The kids and I will take over.” 注意:

【答案】Mother’s room was quiet again. Mother lay still in the quiet room, listening to family sounds. She felt terrible! But everyone else seemed great. In fact, there seemed to be a party that was going on with loud laughs from the children. There was a sudden crash. Then a voice shouted, “Get the baby out of the way—before he cuts himself. Don’t break. Mom’s rest!” Another crash came! The younger girl rushed in with news. “They dropped your plate and the dog ate all your dinner.” The girl ran off. There was more noise.
The children appeared with food in their hands. There is a glass of water, three beans, a cold boiled potato and a small piece of burned meat. Immediately, Mother felt great. As the children watched carefully, she ate her cold dinner. “Everything tastes so good,” Mom smiled, showing her appreciation. “Thank you for acting positively, my kids. I feel better now.”

It started when I was in high school. Growing up in the small town, I had a dream: to work in television. I was too embarrassed to tell anyone for I wanted to work in television—except my parents. To me, it sounded like a dream that could never come true.
Thankfully, my parents are on my side, especially my dad, often said, “You can do anything you want to do.” My dad believed in total equality, and he was particularly supportive of the girls in the family. He was my steady rock—always there for me.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself: I’m new and they’re new. I don’t know a soul there, so if I’m going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president. I found out who the president was and decided to call him. What could I lose I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, “Good,
Faye. That’s exactly what you should do.”
With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television, spoke to his secretary and asked if I could speak to Mr. Brown. She said sure! Suddenly Mr. Brown was on the phone, and he accepted my asking to visit their studio. At 11 o'clock on the appointed day, I arrived at the studio. Mr. Brown took me around and introduced me to everybody. I had picked eleven o'clock on purpose, because I thought Mr. Brown might invite me to lunch. Sure enough, after the tour he said, “Are you free for lunch ” Of course, I accepted.
We went to lunch at The Inn on the Park. When we sat down, he looked at me and said, “What do you want ” He sounded a little angry and frustrated—but very curious.

Paragraph 2:
Everything went beautifully. I had the job! In the next first show, I was nervous. What if I make a mistake When I began to walk out on stage, I replaced the negative thoughts with positive ones: This is going to be the best show ever, I told myself. You are going to just shine! My positive thinking worked. It was a good show. During that first show, I thought of my parents at home watching, and said to myself, “Look at me now, Dad!” From that day, everything happened for me. And everything came from finding the courage back in 1975 to make that one phone call.

Last week, as I was having breakfast in my truck, I noticed a boy, sitting by the road with his dog. He was holding a sign asking for money or food to help feed him and his dog. People drove past ignoring them.
When I finished my breakfast, I decided to buy some food for them. As I was leaving, I pulled up beside him and handed him a bag of breakfast and a small bag of dog food. I asked him if he would be willing to work hard for the pay. He immediately said that he could be the hardest worker I had ever seen.
The next day he carried wood around and fetched tools for me all day without complaining once. His dog simply followed him. During the day I learned about his sad experiences. When the boy was 15 years old, his mother became critically ill. His father, who took care of the boy’s mother, could not go out to work, and the poor boy had to drop out of school because of being unable to afford his school tuition. Being too young, he failed to find a job. he had to beg near his home to help his parents.
A month later, I paid him $2000, the look on his face was well worth it. My aimless act of kindness seemed to put spark (活力) back in his eyes.

【答案】 After that I continued to offer him some work and pay him. The boy still worked very hard. Even though he was assigned a very difficult job, he would not complain at all. Gradually, the boy became more active. One morning, the boy walked up to me very happily, telling me that his mother was getting better and his father could go out to work. Besides, he earned enough money to pay his tuition. He could finally go back to school.
Tears of joy flooded the boy’s eyes. Saying thanks, he threw himself into my arms and gave me a big hug. He sincerely said that without my help, he would not have the opportunity to study in school again. He promised to study hard in the future. If he had the opportunity, he would help people in need like me. I knew that a little kindness would also have a great impact.

I found that Minnie had been unhappy ever since her family moved away from Hartford, but I was never quite sure how to approach her about it.
From the time she was a child. she was abnormally quiet; she would rarely speak unless she was spoken to, and even then her response would be very little. Despite her soft-spoken nature. she showed a great interest in art-particularly painting. Whatever she lacked in words, she made up with the paintbrush, and so it was through her paintings that I first noticed something was wrong. When she painted an animal, it would be the pigeons(鸽 子)flying in Hanford Park; or, when she painted a person, it would be the partner she played badminton with at the Hartford playground. Whether intentionally or not, he sowed in her paintings what she hesitated to put into words.
Being her elder cousin, I was eager to make her move to the big city as smooth as possible. Hartford was a small country town.so Minnie had grown up alongside familiar faces who were used to her timidity(羞怯). But in the city everyone was a stranger, which made it a challenge for her to communicate with others.
This problem was more obvious with her changing schools. What’s more, she was under some pressure to improve her grades. Although she was a good student, her mother was very demanding of her. She always wanted Minnie to seize all the opportunities to be the best, but it was really difficult for Minnie.
On Fridays when my high school finishes early, I usually head over to the middle school to walk Minnie home. It being such a Friday, I approached the school gate expecting to find her waiting for me as usual, but she wasn’t there.

she wasn't home. Anxious and worried, I took the usual path home, asking passers-by whether they had seen such a girl. But she was nowhere to be found. I was burning with anxiety. Standing by the roadside, I was at a loss what to do when her paintings of Hartford came to my mind. A ray of hope rose in my heart. Without hesitation, I rushed to the train station.
There she was, sitting helplessly in the waiting area of the train station. I hurried to her, but all my questions went unanswered. Then I took my notebook and drew a sad face with a question mark. Slowly, she picked it up and drew a girl and a house-her Hartford home. Seeing that, I gave her a hug, saying “It’s never easy to start a new life, but we are all here with you.” She nodded in relief. Hand in hand, we headed home.

One late afternoon, Tina was driving on a highway when a severe snowstorm hit without warning. In a short time, the heavy snow, coupled with the strong wind, turned everything into white and made the road extremely dangerous.
Tina later found out that this kind of storm is called a “Saskatchewan screamer”, which comes on extremely fast with high winds. It’s really frightening and deadly to be caught in such extreme weather.
Unable to see the road clearly, Tina had to stop her car and call 911. The operator told her that phone calls for help kept flooding in and all the rescuers had been called out. She suggested that Tina should wait out the storm in her car rather than risk driving on or going out. She took Tina’s information and told her that an officer would call her back. Tina waited anxiously for almost two hours, but nobody called her yet to check in. “The storm showed no sign of stopping. What was worse, it was getting dark. I couldn’t see anything outside the car since the snow had covered all the windows. The wind was still howling and the temperature was getting lower and lower in the car. I had no idea whom I could turn to for help,” Tina later wrote in a Facebook post. “Alone and cold, I began to panic, worrying about getting hit by an oncoming vehicle, getting buried ( 埋 没 ) in a snowbank, having my tailpipe blocked by the snow...I was really worried I couldn’t ever make it home to my family.”
That was when Tina realized that it was no use waiting passively for help. She decided to do something herself. So she took out her cellphone, logged on to the Google Map and determined her location. She found online a neighborhood Facebook group for the area that she was passing through and shared a comment about her trouble with her location marked on the map. Then all she could do next was sit in the car, praying someone could
make a response to her as early as possible.

Frank rushed out into the storm without hesitation. The snow was so heavy that even with the flashlight, Frank could barely see right in front of him. It was really tough for the 80-year-old, but never did he think of giving up. It took him over an hour to finally find Tina’s car. Tina burst into tears when she saw Frank. Then with Frank leading the way, Tina drove slowly and carefully towards Frank’s house.
Frank’s wife prepared a rich meal for Tina. Hungry and exhausted, Tina enjoyed the meal very much. After dinner, the couple offered to put Tina up for the night. Tina was deeply moved and said, “Thank you so much. I really can’t imagine what would have happened to me but for your help.” The snowstorm stopped in the early morning and by noon the highway had been cleared. It was time to say goodbye. Tina hugged the couple tightly, thanking them again and again, and then started her journey home with her heart filled with warmth.
