When I was a little girl, growing up in Iowa, my favorite thing to do was read — same as today. So, when I thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up, I figured I’d be a librarian. Our town librarian, Mrs. Tonne, was really important to me becoming me. The library had a two-book limit, but she knew I’d blow through those in just a few days, so she always let me check out a big stack. And when I was in fourth grade, our school librarian, Mrs. Ketelsen, sent some poems I’d written about dinosaurs to Highlights magazine. My first published writing!
At the University of Iowa, majoring in journalism, I quickly learned that I did not want to be a newspaper reporter. I’m shy about interviewing people, which amuses almost everyone who knows me and thinks I’m outgoing. (I am, but only with people I know!) So I was thrilled when I was selected for a summer internship (实习) at Reader’s Digest.
Ten years after that, I came back to RD to work as an editor. I’ve worked at other magazines too, but I’ve spent most of my career here, reading magazines, newspapers, websites, and books for stories we could rewrite; writing articles; even choosing jokes. This issue seems like the perfect one to introduce myself to you all.
“The Tractor War” (page 92) takes me home to the Midwest. “Something to Sneeze At” (page 47) reminds me of all the sneezing I did when I moved to New York City and was suddenly allergic (过敏的) to grasses and trees. “Pet Besties” (page 58) makes me think about my cats, brothers Reggie and Smokey, who are sitting together at the window as I write. I relate to lots of our stories this month, and I hope you do too. Enjoy!
4.What did Mrs. Tonne and Mrs Ketelsen have in common
A.They were inspiring and generous town librarians.
B.They allowed the author to check out more books.
C.They were key to the author’s career development.
D.They published the author’s writing in a magazine.
5.Why didn’t the author want to be a newspaper reporter
A.She is amusing to her colleagues.
B.She is out-going with her friends.
C.She is thrilled about her internship.
D.She is shy about questioning people.
6.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.How the stories this month relate to the author.
B.What the author was allergic to in New York.
C.What the author’s home is like in Midwest.
D.How close the author’s pets are to her.
7.What is the text
A.A diary entry. B.An editor’s note.
C.A book review. D.An academic essay.

People who walk briskly (迅速地) for two and a half hours a week have a 25 percent lower risk of depression, according to a study. Researchers from Cambridge University found that physical activity in line with government guidelines was also linked to better mental health. Their paper, published in JAMA Psychiatry, found that even those who managed half the recommended amount had an 18 percent lower risk of depression than those who did nothing.
Dr Matt Pearce, first author on the paper, said, “The key message of the paper is that risk of depression is substantially lower for individuals who are physically active, and that most of these lower benefits occur at levels below the current health recommendations. Physical activity should therefore be encouraged to improve mental health even in inactive individuals who struggle to reach current recommendations.”
The research combined data from 15 earlier studies, with 191,130 participants, all looking at the relationship between depression and physical activity. Since the study was observational in nature, it cannot prove a cause-and-effect relationship.
The researchers found “only minor additional benefits” to mental health when people were physically active beyond the recommended levels. Professor James Woodcock, a senior author on the paper, said, “There are two key features of this relationship: firstly, that the biggest difference in the risk of depression was seen when comparing those reporting no activity with those reporting a small amount”. “Even ten minutes a day appears to make a big difference. Secondly, that there appear to be minimal additional benefits of doing high volumes of activity.”
The researchers said there were likely to be multiple reasons for their findings, including exercise activating certain networks in the brain and body, releasing feel good hormones called endorphins (内啡肽). Besides, people who are physically active usually sleep better, a key component of protecting your mental health. It might also be that improvements to individuals’ body image from being more active, and increases in social interaction during activity played a role. Getting out in green spaces was another likely factor to boost mood, with many studies linking the use of green spaces and lower depression risks.
8.What did the researchers from Cambridge University discover
A.Physical activity can reduce depression.
B.Brisk walking should be recommended.
C.Doing exercise can boost overall health.
D.Moderation is the key in physical activity.
9.How did the researchers draw the conclusion
A.By repeating 15 earlier experiments.
B.By analyzing data from 15 previous studies.
C.By proving the cause-and-effect relationship.
D.By collecting data from 191,130 participants.
10.Which of the following statements would Professor James Woodcock agree with
A.A small amount of physical activity can work wonders.
B.Extra physical activity might do harm to people’s health.
C.It is highly recommended to take high volumes of exercise.
D.A 10-minute workout every day brings the biggest difference.
11.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.Endorphins activate certain parts in the brain.
B.Green spaces are helpful in lifting one’s spirits.
C.Stable mental health can improve sleep quality.
D.Improved body image increases social interaction.

Who needs friends According to most psychologists (心理学家), we all do, especially nowadays when so many other aspects (方面) of modern life are changing. It seems that having friends keeps us both healthy and happy.
The number of TV series about groups of friends shows just how important friendship is to us. Psychologist Dorothy Rowe says that many of us now turn to our friends, instead of our families, for advice, comfort and security (安全感). One woman named Rebecca she interviewed even told her that if she had got to choose between her husband and her friend, she would choose her friend.
Since our friends mean so much to us, it is not surprising that the happiest marriages are also friendships. “Once the romantic stage of a relationship has passed, it is friendship that holds people together,” says Rowe. If the couple do not make some change, they will either get tired of each other and break up or stay together and seek friendship with others.
But is friendship equally important to women and men According to author Rhonda Pritchard, women are more likely than men to have close friends. “You tell a friend things that you’d never tell a partner”, says one woman she interviewed. For men, friendship is usually based on doing things together rather than the private conversations that are typical of women friend. Men share time and activities like building a fence or a business, running, riding a bike, fishing or watching football, but they don’t often share their feelings.
Although many women find their relationships with a husband or boyfriend is not enough, many men say that their partner is their best friend. Even women who are very happily married are likely to become very unhappy without a close friend and can even find the breakup of a close friend as painful as the end of a marriage.
12.What did Rebecca think about friendship
A.Families are reliable forever.
B.Her friend means more to her than her husband
C.One needn’t have too many friends.
D.Friends are as important as families.
13.Some couples look for friends outside their relationships because .
A.they are encouraged by their partners.
B.they are not fairly treated by their partners
C.they don’t get what they need from their partners.
D.they think their friends are more romantic.
14.What is the main difference between men’s and women’s friendships
A.Women often do things together.
B.Women often talk about business with friends.
C.Men seldom talk about their feelings.
D.Men often talk to their friends about work and family.
15.When a friendship ends, some women may .
A.feel as upset as when a marriage ends.
B.share feelings with their partners.
C.treat their partners as friends.
D.turn to their husband for comfort.

Many teachers or courses now assign a participation grade to students. Participating in class especially speaking up can not only improve your grade but also show your teacher that you are a good student. 16 . Your teacher will likely approve of the effort you are putting in. Here are some tips on speaking up in class.
Relax
If you’re a bundle of nerves, you may find it hard to speak up. Take a few deep breaths before you raise your hand to speak. Remind yourself that you are prepared and that you have something important to say or ask. 17 . More likely than not, other students will think you are brave and smart for participating.
Speak clearly
When you have something to say, speak as clearly and concisely as possible. Don’t mumble or look at the floor while you are talking. 18 . Don’t be cocky or condescending, just be confident.
Ask questions
If something is confusing to you, ask about it. This pertains to questions you may have written down while doing your homework as well as to material that is new to that day’s class. Other students are likely wondering the same thing you are. 19
Give your opinion
Don’t be afraid to respectfully disagree with a student, the author of what you’ve read, or even your teacher. Don’t insult anyone, even in a debate, but don’t feel like to have to agree with everyone either.
20
Don’t try to answer every question or give an opinion on every topic. At the same time, don’t think that answering one question the entire semester or year is going to cut it. Aim to speak up once or twice per class session. However, don’t just speak to speak. Make sure you have something relevant to say.
A.Find a balance
B.Answer questions politely
C.Address the teacher (or student) directly
D.Sure, all eyes may be on you, but only for a minute or two

五、读后续写(满分25分,共1题)
47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
By December 2007, my husband had been out of work for six months. Of our six children, the eldest one Jack was 19 and usually pretty handy(手巧的) with electronics. Dad had told him, “I wouldn’t open that DVD player if I were you.” Well, Jack wasn’t Dad, he did open it out of curiosity and as a result, it quit working. A new DVD player cost $250 and it wasn’t on our list to buy, since car repairs would need a large amount of money and daily expenses were also wanting money.
The next day, our neighbor came to our house. When she saw the broken DVD player, she said, “Your children wouldn’t be happy without the DVD player in the coming Christmas holiday.” I just shook my head as I told her about our financial situation.
However, I determined to make our upcoming Christmas happy with cheap things — parades, community fun days, baking cookies, and making candy and homemade gift baskets. Perhaps those things weren’t as exciting as filling the tree with gifts, but hopefully my children would learn that family togetherness and traditions are more important than gifts.
One evening after dinner, I was standing in the kitchen when the doorbell rang. I went to answer the door but found no one there. I hate it when those bad neighbor kids “ring and run”. I decided to find them this time! Quietly, I headed out to the sidewalk to find the bad kid and give him/her a good lesson.
Heading toward the mailbox, I heard someone near the house and called out, “OK, you may think it’s funny to ring the doorbell and run, but I don’t!” Then I saw movement. Someone moved behind my car, probably thinking he/she could go quickly around the back of the car and be home free. I stood at the end of the driveway. “Come out,” I said, in my biggest, scary Mom voice. “I can see you there!”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
(1)A disguised but familiar female voice replied, “Hey lady, go and check your door!”

【导语】本文是说明文。主要介绍了一些在课堂上发言的技巧。
16.根据前文“Participating in class especially speaking up can not only improve your grade but also show your teacher that you are a good student.(参与课堂,特别是发言,不仅可以提高你的成绩,还可以向你的老师展示你是一个好学生)”以及后文“Your teacher will likely approve of the effort you are putting in.(你的老师很可能会认可你所付出的努力)”可知,空处是一个过渡句,由前文讲在课堂发言的好处,过渡到老师的看法,所以F项“Speaking up shows you care about the class and are interested in the material(大声说出来表明你关心这门课,对材料感兴趣)”符合文意。故选F项。
17.根据本段小标题“Relax(放松)”以及后文“More likely than not, other students will think you are brave and smart for participating.(更有可能的是,其他学生会认为你的参与是勇敢和聪明的)”可知,推知空处应是其他同学另一种做法,和后文比较,所以D项“Sure, all eyes may be on you, but only for a minute or two(当然,所有人的目光都在你身上,但只有一两分钟)”符合文意,本句也点出紧张的原因,和小标题相呼应。故选D项。
18.根据前文“When you have something to say, speak as clearly and concisely as possible. Don’t mumble or look at the floor while you are talking.(当你有话要说的时候,尽量说得清楚简洁。说话时不要喃喃自语或看着地板)”和下文“Don’t be cocky or condescending, just be confident.(不要骄傲或居高临下,要自信)”推知,空处也是发言时需要注意的地方,所以C项“Address the teacher (or student) directly(直接称呼老师(或学生))”,也是需要注意的点,符合文意。故选C项。
19.分空处位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“If something is confusing to you, ask about it. This pertains to questions you may have written down while doing your homework as well as to material that is new to that day’s class. Other students are likely wondering the same thing you are.(如果有什么事情让你感到困惑,就去问问。这既适用于你在做作业时写下的问题,也适用于当天课堂上的新内容。其他学生可能也在想和你一样的事情)”可知,前文是在讲问老师问题,由此推知,空处陈述老师对这种情况的反应。所以E项“And the teacher will be glad to take a few minutes to clarify an issue.(老师很乐意花几分钟时间澄清问题)”符合文意。故选E项。
20.分析设空可知,空处是本段小标题,根据后文“Don’t try to answer every question or give an opinion on every topic. At the same time, don’t think that answering one question the entire semester or year is going to cut it. Aim to speak up once or twice per class session. However, don’t just speak to speak. Make sure you have something relevant to say.(不要试图回答每个问题或对每个话题都发表意见。与此同时,不要认为回答一个问题就能解决整个学期或一年的问题。力争每节课发言一到两次。然而,不要只是为了发言而发言。而是确保你有相关的内容要说)”可知,本段主要是说在总是发言和不发言间要找到平衡点,所以A项“Find a balance(找到平衡)”符合文意。故选A项。

47.One possible version:
A disguised but familiar female voice replied, “Hey lady, go and check your door!” I stopped short — what was up I said, “Just wait for me here! I will be back soon!” Thinking the person might tell the truth, I left the driveway and went to the door. There, I found a red envelope attached to the door. I became curious to know what was inside the red envelope. The person disappeared in the darkness while I took the red envelope inside.
Surprisingly, inside the red envelope was a $250 gift card for a department store. It had a note that said, “This card will explode at the checkout if you purchase a DVD player, so don’t do it.” 250 dollars was exactly the price of a new DVD player. Of course I understood what the person truly meant. The next day, I bought a new DVD player and we had a wonderful Christmas.
