My name is Linda. I am from Isla de Maipo, Chile. I live with my dad, my mom
and a rabbit happily. But I was born with a cleft lip(唇裂).
I don’t remember anything about my first years with my cleft lip. All I know is
that when I was young, my parents found Fundación Gantz in Santiago, where I had
been for free treatment.
Every time when I went to Fundación Gantz, my heart was full of thanks to my
parents. It was not easy to arrive on time for medical examinations. We had to get up
at six in the morning to drive for more than an hour and be careful not to get hit by
other cars, but my parents never complained about such busy and tiring days.
Doctors at Fundación Gantz helped me a lot. First, they healed my cleft lip. Then,
with orthodontic treatment(正畸治疗), they managed to correct my bite, and later
they performed an operation on my jawbone.
I thank the doctors there who treated me, and Dr. Angus is my favorite —he has
known me since I was born. When I was in the waiting room waiting for my operation
on my jawbone, I was sweating all over in fear. Dr. Angus came to my side and talked
to me endlessly about the things I was interested in, such as Kayros’ music and
Bolano’s books, making me feel relaxed.
In the past, before the treatment, I had no confidence, and children made jokes
on my cleft lip at school. I started training in Taekwondo(跆拳道)at the age of four in
a gym next to my kindergarten and it was just what I needed at that time. It changed
me and the children around me —before, children played tricks on me, but later they
respected me. Today, when people talk about something on my lip, I will tell them the
little mark never bothers me because it is so small that it can hardly be seen.
I want to tell the medical experts at Gantz to keep it up because their work is
admirable, and they help a lot of people in need.
24. Which of the following can best describe the author’s parents
A. Selfless. B. Impatient. C. Fair. D. Outgoing.
25. How did Dr. Angus help the author reduce her fear of the operation
3

C. He played music for her. D. He changed her operation plan.
26. How did Taekwondo change the 4-year-old author
A. It made her school time colorful. B. It built her confidence.
C. It improved her school performances. D. It prepared her for her future career.
27. What does the underlined word “something” refer to in paragraph 6
A. The color. B. The cost. C. The operation. D. The mark.
C
What could be perfect for the partner, who embarrasses you on the dance floor
Smart socks, which can teach people to dance, maybe the answer for anyone with two
left feet.
Initially, the socks have been developed as a running tool to help runners
improve their skills. Thanks to the socks, users can accurately record not only how far
and fast they run but also how well. It means the user maximizes their performance,
and reduces damage to body and prevents hurt. The hi-tech socks are made of special
fibers that watch the movements of your feet. They look, feel and can be washed like
normal clothes.
Sensors record each movement and send it by an ankle transmitter(脚踝发射器)
to a smartphone. Then a “virtual coach” application shows the information and can
tell the user what they are doing wrong, and help to improve skill in any task with
feet.
The socks should be useful to athletes and weekend joggers. “People think
running is so easy and of course everybody can do it but not necessarily safely and
well,” Dr Davide Vigano said. A recent study showed that between 60 and 80 percent
of runners got hurt per year. This is petty much more than any other human activity.
Researchers say the technology can also be developed to teach people how to dance,
play sports such as golf, or even to help to teach women to walk better in high heels.
Mr. Vigano said, “People could all benefit from the idea. We have had interest
from all sorts of sports, like skiing, football, cycling and golf. Anything where you
have to use your feet can use it. It could even be put in high heels to help women walk
in them safely.”
Socks are just the start, and the technology could be used in gloves, hats and
boots. The socks, anklet(脚链 ) and software package, are expected to be sold for
around 120, which will go on sale in March.
28. What does the underlined part “anyone with two left feet” refer to in paragraph 1
A. People who are disabled B. People who are poor at dancing
C. People who are good at dancing. D. People who do not like dancing.
29. Why were smart socks developed in the beginning
A. To improve runners' performance. B. To teach people to dance
C. To help women walk safely. D. To record dance movement
30. What's special about fibers that the socks are made of
A. They feel much softer than normal clothes.
B. They can monitor the movement of feet.
C. They should be washed in a special washing machine.
D. They are expensive to produce.
31. What can be inferred from the text
A. Only professional athletes can benefit from the technology.
4
{#{QQABYYSAggioQABAAQACAwniCAOQkhCCCKgOwBAQMEAAiRFABCA=}#}
B. The technology has been widely used in all sorts of sports.
C. All people can run safely and well thanks to the socks.
D. The technology could bring a potential market.

We always hear that texting, which refers to the communicative practice of
sending brief messages on cell phones or other personal digital devices, is a disaster.
The idea is that texting leads to the fall of writing ability among young people
because it is full of informal language. As a matter of fact, it isn’t true. In order to see
that texting is actually a whole new way of writing that young people are developing,
we have to look at what language really is.
Basically, if we think about language, it has existed for centuries, and it appears
as speech. We talked. That’s what we’re probably genetically determined. That’s how
we use language most. Writing is something that came along much later. But writing
has its advantage. When you write, you can make the content smooth, colorful and
elegant with language, which is much less likely if you’re just talking. It is because
writing is a conscious(有意识的)process and you can look backwards.
Informal speech is something quite different. Linguists have actually shown that
when we’re speaking informally in an unmonitored way, we tend to speak in words 7
to 10 as a group. You’ll notice this if you ever have an occasion for recording yourself
or a group of people talking. That’s what speech is like. Speech is much looser and
less reflective —very different from writing.
Texting is a new way of writing, because texters use writing skills before texting.
People will process information in more creative uses of language during texting.
When they use informal language in their texts, many understand there are different
communicative situations. They try shortening language for correct spelling of a word
or a phrase. Texting also allows texters much time to form their thoughts and provides
many opportunities for them to revise their ideas. Moreover, texting positively
exercises texters’ rhetorical(修辞的)skills. Since texts are written in various styles,
people must know how to match the style of a text with its message.
Now we have an overall understanding of texting.
32. How does writing differ from speech
A. It came before talking. B. It is an unconscious process.
C. Its style is less strict. D. It can be improved again and again.
33. What does the underlined word “looser” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Stricter. B. Richer. C. Freer. D. Harder.
34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. What is speech exactly.
B. How texters learn to write.
C. How texters send message successfully.
D. The relationship between writing and texting.
35. Which statement about texting does the author agree with
A. It is another form of writing. B. It is less reflective.
C. It is the same as speaking. D. It is a disaster.

It was dark and freezing cold outside though it was four o'clock in the afternoon.
The wind kept blowing. At that time, the bell rang loudly, and everybody packed their
school bags and got ready to go home. The teacher dismissed(解散) the students, and
they walked orderly to the school gate.
David was in Class One, Grade Seven. His mother would come and pick him up
from school but today she was absent. David wondered what had happened, but he
was not worried at all. It usually took only ten minutes for his mother to get to school
by riding an electric bike. David saw his best companion, Tommy, who was his desk
mate. Tommy was waiting patiently for his mother as well. They began to talk freely
and happily. David congratulated Tommy on his excellent performance in the last
math exam. At the same time, Tommy thanked David, without whose help he couldn’t
have made such rapid progress. Five minutes later, Tommy's mother picked up
Tommy and they said goodbye to each other.
David had to put up with his moments of solitude(独处). He had no choice but to
wait until his mother came into his sight. However, half an hour passed, and there was
no sign that his mother would come. David was determined to walk home.
On his way home, David could hardly see any passers-by. The trees shook with
the wind and the leaves fell from them without making any noise. David was lost in
thinking what was wrong with his mother. Some terrible thoughts jumped out of his
mind. “Maybe an accident happened to her. Maybe she got hurt by some robbers.
Maybe she was seriously ill.” Little David burst into tears and quickened his step. He
did not dare to think over the results. What he could do was pray for the safety of his
mother and wish everything was all right.
Time slipped away like a arrow. In the short distance, it was his beautiful house
with a garden. “This must be the worst experience in my life,” David thought to
himself and felt scared.
