A
Very old people do raise problem for almost everyone who comes into touch with them. Their values—this can't be repeated too often—are not necessarily our values. Physical comfort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important for them. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a flat with going-bad food covered with dust on the table, and an old person lying alone on bed, taking no notice of anything. Is it doing harm to personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of relatives so that they might be taken better care of? Some social workers are the ones who clean up the dust, thinking we are in danger of carrying this idea of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety of the old.
Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car, it needs more care as it get older. You can carry this comparison right through to the provision of spare parts. Never forget that such operations are painful experiences, however good the results. At what point should you stop treating the old body? Is it right to try to push off death by using drugs to excite the forgetful old mind and to active the old body, knowing that there is little hope? You cannot ask doctors or scientists to decide, because so long as they can see the technical opportunities, they will feel sure to have a try for the belief that while there's life, there's hope.
When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun.
1.From Paragraph 1 we can infer that________.
A.very old people enjoy living with their relatives
B.very old people are able to keep their rooms clean
C.social services could have nothing to do with very old people
D.very old people prefer to live alone so that they can have more personal freedom
第一段主要讲述老年人的价值观,他们喜欢lying alone on bed, taking no notice of anything,同时作者又提出了一些社会工人的观点。
2.Some social workers think that________.
A.one should not take risks of dealing with old people
B.old people should have the idea of cleaning their rooms
C.personal freedom is more important than health and safety
D.health and safety are more important than personal freedom
3.The word“it”in the last paragraph refers to________.
A.whether age is happy or unpleasant
B.the conclusion you have come to
C.one's money or one's health
D.your talk to the old people
由此可知此处的it应指代“whether age is happy or unpleasant”。
4.The author thinks that________.
A.the opinion that we should try every means possible to save old people is doubtful
B.medical decisions for the old people should be left to the doctors
C.old people can enjoy a happy life only if they are very rich
D.it is always right to treat old people and push off death
B
Remember your first romantic disappointment? Remember the pain and unhappiness of breaking-up—uncertainty? Winne recalls feeling very sad after her first true love deserted(抛弃)her. “My mum came into my room carrying a beautiful nightgown and handed it to me, gave me a hug and said, ‘I know you are feeling very heartbroken. I thought you could use something to make you feel beautiful right now.’” The nightgown didn't make Winne's hurt go away, but she knew that her mother understood and cared about her feelings.
As a parent, as much as you want to make it all better for your teens, give them space. Tell him or her that break-ups are hard and you are there for him whenever he wants to speak to you. Then let go.
Teenage girls often deal with break-ups by talking on the phone with their friends or diving into the Internet for a long chat. They review all the hurts and pains which are being cured. Boys react to broken relationships differently. Boys often become angry since that, unfortunately, which is the only emotional(感情)choice that society accepts for boys. Some boys hide their pain. Respect your teens, when a relationship breaks up. It takes time to get it over, and the only way to get through that is to get through it.
Sometimes teenagers get into trouble while trying to feel accepted again or win back a loved one. Keep reaching out to troubled teenagers. At first, teens will refuse a parent's attempts to help. Don't be afraid to insist.
Teen break-ups can cause heart-wrenching pain, but sooner or later teenagers should be ready to date(约会)again. How can you make your child toward a healthy relationship? Teens are likely to meet others like themselves through activities. The secret to attracting good boys or girls is to become your own independent person who feels good about who she is and what she's about.
5.The beautiful nightgown Winne's mother handed to her________.
A.made her heart broken
B.made her feel beautiful right now
C.didn't make her feel better
D.made her understand her mother
答案:C 根据文中第一段的第六句“The nightgown didn't make Winner's hurt go away.”
6.In the first paragraph, the underlined world“uncertainty”means________.
A.doubt
B.unreturned love
C.pain and unhappiness of breaking up
D.dissatisfaction
7.Which of the following is Not true according to the passage?
A.Parents should be patient with their children, be a good listener and help them.
B.Teenage girls like to talk with friends and engage themselves in a long chat on the Internet when broken relationships happen to them.
C.Boys are usually becoming angry or hiding their pain which people think is normal.
D.Teenagers always refuse parents' attempts to help when they are in trouble.
答案:D 文章的第二段中,“...give them space...and you are always there for him whenever he wants to speak to you.”以及第三段中“...it takes time to go over it...” 第三段中“Boys often become angry since that, ...Some boys hide their pain”说明C项的内容也是对的。而D项中always的表述是不正确的,因为第四段的文章中有这样一句话“At first, teens will refuse...”, at first与always不是同一概念,故D项的内容不正确。
8.If you want to find a true friend, ________.
A.go to take part in all kinds of activities
B.date a boy secretly
C.don't trust others
D.try to be a true“yourself”when you get along with another
