My nine-year-old son Ben had been begging(乞求) me to let him find his way home by subway, by himself. After all, we live in New York City, and getting around by public transportation is a basic(基础的) part of life. It is also the first step toward feeling grown-up.
So on that sunny Sunday, I gave him a subway map, a transportation card, $20 for emergencies, and a couple of coins so that he could call me if necessary. I didn't give him a cell phone because nine-year-olds could lose things easily.
A few days later, I wrote about this experience for a newspaper. Little did I realize the idea that a kid could tour the city on his own, and that a mom would let him go, was big news.
It turned out that many TV shows called me and asked for an interview. Bloggers were going crazy, so I started a blog, too, and letters came pouring in. Finally, I found out why this was such a big story: we have become fearful(害怕的) for our children. Fear is hardly a new thing for parents. But the fear of letting our children out of sight for even a second---that's new. How did this happen? How did it become too scary(令人恐惧的) to let kids be kids?I asked the question when the reporter Trevor Butterworth came.
" News reports! "he answered, "News reports scare the pants off you," What is scarier than a kid being kidnapped(诱拐)?Because there are so many such stories.People start to feel as if kidnappings are happening all the time. That's why the kid-on-the subway story surprises the whole world."
Ben did a good job. He simply proved(证明)that kids could leave home alone and return home safely! But he didn't think it was a big deal. "It was fun. "He said, "But I missed some classes because of the interviews."

Now, some parents in Hangzhou have come up with a creative idea to deal with old uniforms. They have set up an online platform. After having washed the old uniforms, they give them to younger students who need them.
It's hard to say whether or not this is acceptable. Personally, I prefer to save my school uniform as“time capsules (时间胶囊)”.These uniforms have accompanied(陪伴) me throughout my middle school years. Unlike a regular(普通的) café, this coffee shop, known as Bear Paw Café, is only a small open window in a wall along a street in Shanghai. There are no seats or tables at this shop. Customers will need to place their order on their phones. A staff(员工) member will then deliver the coffee through the window while wearing a pair of bear paw gloves.
The café opened on December 3, which is International Day of Disabled Persons(国际残疾人日). Most of the staff at the cafe are disabled persons. Its manager has hearing problems. The staff member who hands out the coffee wears a pair of bear paw gloves because his hands and face are covered in burn scars. What's more, any person with a disability can receive a free cup of coffee at the shop.
Wang Haiging, one of the cafe's three founders, said there were more than 85 million people living with disabilities in China, including more than 20 million with hearing problems and 1.3 million with speech problems. Although the government had helped them a lot, some had no jobs. And the disabled persons found it stressful to interact with strangers face to face.
