Online book sales had been growing by more than 20 percent every year over the past 10 years before 2020, because the online platforms (平台）and online shoppers were growing . Reports and lists by different platforms show that works of psychology (心理学）, comics (连环画）about history , and works of literature (文学）were the most popular books among Chinese readers in 2021 .
Online book sales grew by only 1 percent in 2021 year-on-year (同比）. Book sales in bookshops in 2021 grew by a little over 4 percent .
Since 2018, sales of literature kept dropping until 2021 when it grew by 4.6 percent year-on-year . Among the top 100 best-selling fiction works published in 2021 , 63 were online literary works . And the most popular genres of online literature in China include fantasy (玄幻）, romance and science fiction . Among the 63 online literary works on the top 100 best-selling list of books published in 2021 , most were targeted (定向）at women readers.
Shen Yu , a book editor , has worked in the industry for more than 10 years . He says more people read online literature which is usually entertaining (娱乐）. In these books , the main characters usually get over difficulties and finally achieve success , whether in romantic love or professional (职业的）jobs.
Although online literature grows fast , the leading seats on the best-selling list are still taken by classic books . with The Three-Body Problem trilogy (三部曲） books taking the first three places . Ten books about family education and ten books on economics (经济）and finance(财政）also entered the list.
Besides , comic books on history were also popular , with 12 titles of the Half-an-Hour books series and eight titles of If History Is a Group of Cats series entering the top 100 best -selling list.
Why were online book sale growing
