第二部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2.5分,满分50分)
A
Sometimes shipwrecks(沉船)contain sunken treasure, loads of gold or jewelry. Other shipwrecks are themselves the treasure—the stories of their ill-fated voyages creating a legend that makes them sparkle far more than any gold or precious stones.
The wreck of HMS Endurance, which has finally been located deep beneath the icy seas of Antarctica after being lost 107 years ago, was arguably the most valuable shipwreck ever sought. That’s because its discovery adds another thrilling new chapter to an already fascinating tale of perseverance and survival that has echoed down the decades and still inspires today.
Incredibly well preserved at a depth of almost two miles, the ship is little changed from the day in November 1914 when it finally sank beneath the ice. Endurance became embedded in ice while crossing Antarctica’s Weddell Sea. The video shot by underwater search vehicles shows painted timbers, an undamaged guardrail(护栏)and the name “Endurance” written above the five-pointed symbol of a polar star.
“I tell you, you would have to be made of stone not to feel a bit soft at the sight of that star and the name above,” Mensun Bound, the mission’s marine archaeologist, told the BBC. “You can see a porthole(舷窗)that is in Shackleton’s cabin. At that moment, you really do feel the breath of the great man upon the back of your neck. ” Shackleton’s leadership was crucial to getting his men but alive. The reason why Shackleton is still applauded as a great man becomes obvious when you consider what he achieved in the face of disasters and hardships during his 1914-16 expedition. The practicality and humanity he showed in the face of severe situations was arguably praised.
21. What makes Endurance the most valuable shipwreck
A. The treasure aboard. B. Its inspiring stories.
C. Its undamaged guardrail. D. The symbol of a polar star.
22. What can we infer from Mensun Bound’s words
A. The floating ice is as hard as stones.
B. The well-preserved shipwreck is amazing.
C. The heroic deeds of Shackleton are touching.
D. The discovery of Endurance is challenging.
23. What is the text type of the passage
A. A book review. B. A news report. C. A biography. D. A travel journal.
B
My hands were shaking uncontrollably. I tried incredibly hard to focus on the words that I spent hours putting down on paper. I tried to conquer my fear of speaking in public on numerous occasions throughout my life. During college and at my first few jobs, I would get ridiculously nervous when I had to give a presentation or lead a meeting. Public speaking had been my nemesis for as long as I could remember.
Then in my mid-thirties, I decided to join the public speaking group Toastmasters. At every meeting, we were rated and forced to compete with other speakers for an award. You would think that I would walk away from these experiences as a polished speaker, hut nothing seemed to work.
It wasn’t until recently, when science and scientific institutions were being attacked for unfair reasons during the pandemic, that I decided I must speak out. Science has made this country a place where dreams come true — this is why we all need to protect science. In addition, as a science writer, I try to get readers to understand how science is related to their daily lives.
So I ended up on that frightening stage on that sunny Saturday in April — Earth Day. Despite the body shakes and fear, I persevered. That day, I looked out into the crowd of like-minded science supporters and I felt comfort.
Reaching that milestone goal of getting through a speech truly changed me. At almost forty, I learned that passion can set off a flame in my heart to do things. I never dreamed possible. The darkness that led to my speech is sure to lead to new opportunities and adventures.
24. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “nemesis” in Para. 1
A. Strength. B. Confusion C. Preference. D. Struggles.
25. What happened to the author when leaving Toastmasters
A. Things got worse for him. B. Nervousness remained with him.
C. He became a polished writer. D. He began to feel more competitive.
26. What made the author want to speak out on Earth Day
A. He must rise up to defend science.
B. It was a good chance to learn science.
C. It was a project organized by Toastmasters.
D. He couldn’t have people attacking his fellow scientists.
27. What lesson did the author draw from his successful speech
A. Frustration can be a stepping stone to success.
B. Love motivates us to achieve the unachievable.
C. Science can lead us to make wonderful changes.
D. Any difficulty can be overcome with great effort.

Over the years Ruth Soukup has taught me much about topics ranging from blogging to dejunking to productivity. She’s an inspiring, enthusiastic person who writes for the average woman from the heart. Besides that, she’s fun and authentic.
In her new book Do It Scared: Finding the Courage to Face Your Fears, Overcome Adversity, and Create a Life You Love, Ruth explains something she’s been talking about for years: courage is acting despite your fears instead of being immobilized by them. She describes various kinds of fears, shares hard-won principles of courage, and outlines tested ways to turn the ideas into action.
After conducting an extensive survey, Ruth and her team identified seven“fear archetypes(典型)”, ways of letting fear rule your life. She discusses these in detail, explaining how each one of them has positive attributes(属性), how they can bold us back and how we can overcome them.
In the second section of the book, Ruth shares seven principles of courage. She’s encouraging but also tough, because reality is tough. Most of us know these principles of courage, but it is always good to be reminded of them and to see examples in action.
Finally, because the biggest practical antidote(对抗手段)to fear is action, she discusses ways to turn courage into action. Ruth discusses goal setting, motivation, action plans, positive relationships, comparisons, excuses, and celebrating wins. Ruth’s personal take, her research, and her suggestions are actually more likely to help you achieve your goals.
Do It Scared is a very positive book. It is also grounded in reality. It’s meant to be a practical encouragement to those who are unable to follow their callings because they are paralyzed with fear, and such encouragement is valuable.
Yes, we will have to think for ourselves and evaluate the things Ruth says in the book, but reading Do It Scared could be one step toward learning how better to love those around us. I recommend it to all.
28. What does the author say about Ruth
A. She is serious but helpful B. She struggles with her life.
C. She is an inspiration to women. D. She lacks productivity and innovation.
29. How is the book Do It Scared developed
A. By providing detailed descriptions of personal experiences.
B. By combining research, examples and personal opinions.
C. By giving quotes taken from famous speeches.
D. By explaining the causes and effects of fear.
30. What does Ruth mainly focus on in the last section of her book
A. Principles of courage. B. Various kinds of fears.
C. Methods of replacing fear with action. D. Suggestions on setting achievable goals.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward the book
A. It is worth reading. B. It is purely theoretical.
C. There is no book worse than it D. There is room for improvement.
D
It’s no secret that literature is powerful. For many of us, there have been times in our lives — a loved one’s passing, our first heartbreak — that we couldn’t have made it through without a few extraordinary books, poems, or perhaps even just a few words strung together. We knew the connective power of literature all along, but now there’s science behind it.
A number of studies have shown that poetry provides a number of benefits for patients suffering from chronic(慢性的)and terminal(晚期的)illnesses. A randomized clinical trial, which set out to “evaluate the effect of passive listening to music and poetry on the variation in pain, depression, and hope scores” of 75 adult patients, came back with fascinating results. Researchers discovered that music and poetry both lessened pain intensity and depression, but only poetry increased hope scores.
After listening to poems, one participant said, “I feel calmer when I hear those words. Sadness passes. They are important words; they show me that I’m not alone. ” What is it about those words that gives them the power to keep sadness away, and, moreover, to bring peace and comfort As reported in Nautilus, “Poetry has a structure, which is something we can experience with our bodies. ”
Using something called functional magnetic resonance imaging, researchers were able to find out that the recitation of poetry engages the mesolimbic pathway(中脑边缘通路), the primary reward circuitry in the brain. While poetry won’t cure the disease, it can help patients deal with the pain, both physical and emotional, associated with the illness. Treatment is important, but what physicians tend to forget is that healing is equally crucial for successful recovery. And healing is not just a matter of the body, but one of the mind and spirit, too.
In the context of terminal illness, communication between patient and physician extends beyond mere descriptions of physical pain, and transcends to more personal, and even more difficult to express conditions, such as mood, morale, and tiredness. Through poetry, doctors are able to better understand the mental state of their patients and as a result, better aid patients in the healing or treatment process.
32. What did the clinical trial’s researchers find
A. Music proved ineffective in easing patients’ pain.
B. Music raised patients’ hopes of a speedy recovery.
C. Poetry could help cure chronic and terminal diseases.
D. Poetry helped to relieve pain and depression and give hope.
33. What did one participant’s words show
A. Poems often bore hidden meanings.
B. Poems should be experienced first-hand.
C Poems had a surprisingly calming influence.
D. Poems played a connective role among patients.
34. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A. Patients’ spirit matters the most in the healing process.
B. Poetry enables doctors to connect with patients emotionally.
C. Poetry serve as an immediate treatment for most diseases.
D. Patients’ self-experimentation for a cure should be encouraged.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. The desire to heal B. The art of expression
C. The healing power of poetry D. The benefit of literature to doctors

Poetry Slam is a type of competition where people read their poems without props(道具), costumes or music. After performing, they get scores(0-10)from 5 judges. The judges can be anyone — they don’t even need to be poets! Scores are awarded based on how much each judge likes the poem. 36 Your poem doesn’t need to be a specific form of poetry. With that in mind, here are some common rules you’ll find in the competition.
Make it original. The written piece must be original. 37
Time. Each poet has three minutes to perform. While reading your poem, make sure you finish it within three minutes. 38
Simple. 39 Read and perform it for family and friends before completing. Ask them what is clear and what is not. Choose appropriate themes, like relationships, family-social problems, etc. Your poem should be clear and convey a message.
Rhythmic. Your poem should have a rhythm that shows through your performance. A slam poem moves the audience through different emotions. 40
A. Poets lose points for failing to meet limit.
B. The poem performed for the competition needs to be your own work.
C. The highest and lowest scores are dropped and the middle three are kept.
D. The purpose of this judging process is to attract everyone to take part in it.
E. Your poem should be able to reach your audience the first time it is heard.
F. How the poem is performed is at least as important as the content if not more.
G. Watch other Poetry Slams for encouragement, to get feedback and start competing in your own Poetry Slam.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a little dog followed them home after school. It had short legs and long lovely ears, with a fawn-colored coat. It was the cutest dog I had ever seen and the girls begged me to keep it.
The dog was barely twelve weeks old. It had no collar or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an advertisement in the lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, its owners should have watched it more closely.
By the end of the week the dog was part of our family. It was very intelligent and good with the girls. The following week something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular advertisement jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost dog in the neighborhood of our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the phone.
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the advertisement I quickly put paper away in the drawer and continued with my dusting. I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband
By now we had named the dog. It looked like a Molly, so that was what we called it. It followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, it was one step behind them. When they did housework, it was there to lend a hand.
There was only one problem with this otherwise perfect picture: my conscience was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the dog they were desperately seeking. It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.
