Frequently Asked Questions for Yellowstone National Park
How much is the entrance fee
$85—Private, non-commercial vehicle; $30—Motorcycle or snowmobile(winter); $20—Visitors 16 and older entering by foot, bike, ski, etc. *This fee provides the visitor with a 7-day entrance permit for both Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.
Where should we stay
Your decision may depend on how much time you have and what you want to see the most. If you plan on visiting Yellowstone National Park for only a few days and want to experience some of the main attractions, then West Yellowstone would be a good base. If you want to have the full park experience then perhaps lodging(住宿) a told Faithful would be a good choice. If you want to view the most wildlife, then we suggest the Northeast Entrance.
When is the best time to visit the park
This depends on what your interests are. Spring has abundant wildlife, roaring waterfalls and wild weather. Summer has it all including the most crowds, so you'd better get out early and eat your breakfast on the road! Fall is a special time of year. Everything seems to be declining including the crowds. Winter is a time of being a bit of social isolation. In years past it was more “economical” to visit most of the park. Now it is more restricted unless you can afford a snow-coach or guided snowmobile tour.
Can I get Cell and Wi-Fi
Free public Wi-Fi is available at Al-bright Visitor Center and at some park lodges for registered guests. Cell service is extremely limited, with reception only available in or near major developed areas. In summer, service often reaches its limit in these areas. Yet, it is sad to see the latest generation fade away from normal everyday activities and conversation. Get outlook around, admire the wonders. There're plenty of natural and human distractions around every corner. The last thing we want to do is distract visitors from Yellowstone's wonders especially while driving.
46. How much is the entrance fee in total if Jeffery makes a self-driving rip to Yellowstone with his father and his 14-year-old daughter during the winter vacation
A. $50 B. $85 C. $105 D. $125
47. What does the underlined sentence imply
A. Most of the park was restricted to visitors in winter in the past.
B. Visiting Yellowstone in winter is preferred by most local people.
C. Winter used to be the best time to visit the park in terms of expenses.
D. Nowadays most people choose to tour the park on as now-coach in winter.
48. What can we learn from the passage
A. The entrance ticket applies to Yellowstone only.
B. Old Faithful provides a full view of the park.
C. The wireless connection is not satisfactory.
D. Younger generations makeup the majority of park visitors.

This past January, Captain Preet Chandi set foot on a historic, though decidedly icy, trail by becoming the first African woman to reach the South Pole alone, without assistance. While others might have been content to make history with this singular accomplishment, “Polar Preet” Chandi is not one to rest on her laurels(桂冠). The journey to the South Pole was merely “phase one” of a larger and even more extraordinary goal for the adventurous British Army officer.
For “phase two”, the 33-year-old has set her sights on crossing Antarctica—once again doing the journey alone and unsupported to become the first woman to achieve this goal.
On November 14, Chandi departed from Hercules Inlet, a nice-filled bay at the southwestern section of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf bordering the Weddell Sea in Antarctica. Her goal is to reach Reedy Glacier within 75 days, a coast-to-coast journey con siting of roughly 1, 100 miles. And “roughly” is the operative (关键的) word here-shell be pulling as led with equipment, weighing about 264 pounds altogether, and she’ll be doing so in temperatures that can sink to minus 58 degrees Fahrenheit, with wind speed s of up to 60 miles per hour.
Her journey thus far required y cars of training. Prior to her 700-mile South Pole journey, she prepared by attending a polar survival course in Norway. She continued her training back home in the U.K.by dragging tires, the closest thing to pulling a sled, and a month-long practice run in Greenland. Ultimately, Chandi went on to finish her first South Pole expedition in 40 days, a full eight days ahead of schedule.
When not otherwise setting records of human endurance in extreme conditions, Chandi tries to inspire others in her day-to-day work.
Chandi will be posting interval voice blog updates of her phase two progress on her website, , where alive tracking map will also provide her current location at every point along her journey.

The technology for speech-recognition systems has advanced greatly since its appearance in the 1950s. Many voice systems can understand the language when spoken at a normal conversational rate. But even the advanced human-machine interfaces(人机交互) used today are unable to trick the listeners into thinking a computer is a human. Why is this Simply put it's because human beings rely on more than words to convey ideas or interpret messages, such as tones, facial expressions, body movements, and objects in the world around them.
One significant recent achievement in the field of talking computers is virtual personal assistants (VPAs) on mobile phones. If you tell a mobile phone VPA that you want to schedule a lunch with a friend, it can set the appointment in your phone in seconds. The VPA can also hold a basic “conversation” and has earned fame for its elementary sense of humour. Still, the humour is preprogrammed and can be triggered only when human users speak certain keywords.
While the potential for “real” communication between a human and a machine may sec m exciting, this possibility concerns some people. Some experts worry about people's attachment to these machines and fear that the art of successful human-to-human conversation will be undeveloped in younger generations. They worry that people won't be able to display the right emotion or tone in conversations because they haven't been practising those skills. Others fear that machines will take over functions that were traditionally performed by humans, such as customer service. Another concern often associated with the development of new technology is the invasion of privacy(侵犯隐私) .When people use certain speech-recognition applications, they leave behind an audio track of their speech. When you ask a VPA for directions, your speech is sent and saved to a remote server for processing. This digital trail may lead to data mining, or the collection of large quantities of personal data.
For now, however, the continuing evolution of speech-recognition software is worth expecting. Leading companies in the field hope to make human communication with machines as seamless as possible, just like communicating with another human.

C. To inspire readers to explore the future of a new technology.
D. To inform readers of the double-edged quality of a new technology.
56. What is the main idea of the passage

Is there a single word that motivates us more than “weekend” It’s like the promise of a sweet hereafter following what seems like a lifetime of toil (劳累). Is the spring in our step that gets bouncier with each passing day-until by Friday, we're practically bumping our heads against the ceiling.
The trouble is that the weekend is a rip-off. You think you're getting 48 hours of unconditional downtime, but reality takes a discount. In fact, it takes most of Sunday. That's when anxiety comes creeping in and another countdown begins: 12 hours until Monday. Sure, weekend is free time. But the mounting stress of an incoming Monday can erase any joy you might get from a Sunday evening.
That feeling is so common among the Monday-to-Friday crowd, there's even more than one name for it:the Sunday Scaries, or Sunday Fear Syndrome. Going from a countdown to the weekend to a countdown to Monday can be difficult. Even — a website that specializes in yoking humans to the Monday-to-Friday cycle—admits it's a problem. In a survey, Monster found that 76% of Americans have “really bad” Sunday night blues.
For most people, Sunday is no holiday at all. It may all come down to the same problem: We can't stop thinking about tomorrow. Even worse, we may develop some downright unhealthy coping strategies for that transition from weekends to Monday. Some might resist staying up late, milking every minute of a fleeting Sunday in the form of mind-numbing distractions.
But why should Monday cast such along and fearful shadow on our lives Maybe it's because the counter is reset, and the weekend, or happiness, seems at its furthest point. If, like most of us, you have a tolerable job, but don't much like the whole idea of working, there are plenty of ways to make Mondays a little less stressful. Most importantly, don't leave any unsettled Friday business hanging over the weekend. So, clear the decks and tie up loose ends.
57. What do we know about weekend in paragraph 2
A. It is hard-earned. B. It doesn't bring joy as expected.
C. It adds to people's anxiety. D. It provides good time to relax.
58. Why does the writer mention in the text
A. To support his idea. B. To clarify a question.
C. To show its popularity. D. To provide more information.
59. What does the writer think of the way most people spend the weekend
A. Tolerant. B. Conservative. C. Practical. D. Unwise.
60. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Why People Are Stressed Out on Fridays
B. Why Monday Takes a Bite Out of Sunday
C. Why a Countdown to the Weekend Is Difficult
D. Why Monday Casts a Fearful Shadow on Our Lives

63 An estimated $6 billion is spent annually on the treat, and the numbers are even higher if restaurant sales are included. Though California produces the most ice cream, the biggest fans, on a per capita (人均的) basis, live in Washington, DC, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin.

My Father's Son
It's hard being an astronaut's son. I often wonder how my father ever had as on like me. I mean he's so special and so good at everything the does. But I'm just an average eleven-year-old kid.
Nowadays I dream about being a famous writer, but I used to dream about doing something spectacular to impress my father and make him proud of me—something like rescuing a child from a burning building or chasing a robber away from an old lady.
I was daydreaming in school one morning. I was daydreaming about being some kind of hero when my friend Ellen reminded me of my English teacher's announcement about a Father's Day essay contest.
“I hope we have a winner right here in my English class,” she said. “There are three prizes for each of you.”
When I got home, I kissed my mom quickly. Then I went upstairs to my room and sat down with a pen and a pad of paper. I started to think about what I would write.
How did I see my father Hmm.
I saw him teaching me how to use a bat and how to throw a baseball I remembered how he hugged me for hours when my dog Spotty was hit and killed by a car. And I remembered how he sat and tried to explain death to me when Grandpa Bob died.
These were the things I was going to write about my dad. To me, he wasn't just a world-famous astronaut He was my dad.
I wrote about all these memories and put them in my essay. I handed it in the next day and was surprised to find out that the winning essays would be read in the auditorium on Thursday night. All the parents and students were invited.
My parents and I went to school Thursday night. One of our neighbors said, “I bet you'll win the contest, David. I bet you wrote what it's like to be the son of an astronaut, and you're the only one in town who could write about that.”
