What’s on at MOMA (The Museum of Modern Art)
Still Film. 2023. Written and directed by James N. Kienitz Wilkins
Mar 3-Mar 7,at MOMA
In Still Film, filmmaker Wilkins criticizes how movies have been marketed over the past four decades. He does this by using old Hollywood still images with himself playing all the characters. Through a playful and subjective journey, he explores how movies can determine the truth, and the impact of technology on the movie-going experience.
Llamadas desde Moscú (Calls from Moscow). 2023. Directed by Luís Alejandro Yero
Mar 4-Mar 8, at MOMA
Yero’s first full-length film describes a group of Cuban migrants living temporarily in a Moscow building. When their plans to immigrate had to pause, the film’s spare and intense style manages to capture their internal world of waiting. Calls from Moscow offers an insightful account of displacement and uncertainty.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, 2022. Directed by Guillermo del Toro
Mar 4-Mar 9, online at our website
Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson direct their first stop-motion-animated film (定格动画电影), retelling the classic story of Pinocchio. The successful film celebrates the children who rightfully disobey and what it means to be truly alive. Its handmade animation takes a naturalistic approach, with fantastical creatures adding wonders to the world.
Escape Me Never. 1947. Directed by Peter Godfrey
Mar 5-Mar 10, at MOMA
Based on the novel The Constant Nymph, the drama is set in the 19th century and features characters competing for the love of a charming but selfish composer. You may have noticed sudden, brief twitching (抽动) at some point while your dog was sleeping and wondered if they were dreaming or even expressing some type of discomfort. These involuntary movements only occur during dream states and usually don’t last long. So is twitching just a normal part of dreaming, or are there times when you should worry
Dogs sleep an average of 12-14 hours each day. While they sleep, a dog’s brain processes information and experiences from the day through dreams. Twitching is often related to active dream cycles in the brain.
According to research by psychologist Stanley Coren, an average-size dog will dream about every 20 minutes, and these dreams will last about a minute. Larger breeds (品种) have fewer dreams that last longer- about every 45 minutes for 4 minutes. The opposite is true for smaller breed dogs; they will dream about every 10 minutes for up to 30 seconds.
Dogs experience the same dream stages as humans, including non-rapid eye movement (NREM), short-wave sleep (SWS), and rapid eye movement (REM). During the REM state, a dog’s eyes move around behind their closed eyelids, and the large body muscles are turned off so the dream is not physically acted out. The amount of twitching depends on how much these off switches cramp muscle movement.
If your dog sleeps next to you, they may unintentionally disturb your sleep with their sudden body movements. However, it is often advised not to awaken a dog that is twitching in their sleep unless they are clearly in distress.
A bad dream or night terror could be the cause of these involuntary movements, and they may wake up frightened. Try to avoid touching them so they don’t bite you as a result of being shocked and panicked. Instead, gently call your dog’s name until they respond. Speak calmly and tell them that they are safe and secure after they wake up. While they appear to be pretty active in their sleep, dreaming dogs may be slow to awaken.
28. Which of the following influences how often dogs dream
A. Their sleeping time. B. Their body size.
C. Their daily experiences. D. Their health conditions.
29. What does the underlined word “cramp” mean in paragraph 4
A. Stimulate. B. Transform. C. Limit. D. Monitor.
30. Why is it advised not to wake up a dog twitching in sleep
A. To avoid being bitten by the dog. B. To ensure the dog adequate sleep.
C. To prevent the dog getting shocked. D. To escape disturbance from the dog.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. How does dogs’ brain work
B. Why do dogs dream at night

Yesterday, people on the social media site Twitter reacted with surprise and humor to a report that claimed, “Scientists have taught spinach (菠菜) to send emails.” That’s not exactly true, but the “news” is based on some amazing work done by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) scientists in 2016, and it’s still worth learning about.
Scientists at MIT have managed to change ordinary spinach plants into natural sensors (传感器) which can detect chemicals used in bombs (炸弹). Using a cheap and small computer system, the spinach can even send a warning email.
The secret to giving spinach these special powers is nanotechnology. For this experiment, the scientists placed two different kinds of nanotech materials into spinach plants: some were tiny sensors; others were tiny tubes called carbon nanotubes. To get the tiny materials into the plants, the scientists put a liquid containing the nano-materials on the bottom of the plants’ leaves. That’s where the plants normally take in CO2 gas.
Once the tiny sensors and nanotubes were in the spinach leaves, the plants did the rest of the work. As part of their natural process, the spinach plants pull water through their roots and into their leaves. If the water contains certain chemicals that are used in bombs, the sensors in the leaves make the nanotubes give off a slightly different kind of light.
By watching the plants constantly using a camera attached to a cheap computer, the scientists set up a system that can send a warning email if chemicals from explosives are detected in the water.
The researchers say it takes about 10 minutes for the plants to react to the chemicals. The computer the scientists used is about the size of a playing card. They say that in the future, their system could even use a cellphone with its camera changed slightly.
Detecting chemicals used in bombs is just one of the many uses the researchers are exploring. The scientists believe that in the future, such a system could give farmers detailed information about the health of the land and water on their farms.
32. Why is the report mentioned in the first paragraph
A. To tell a joke made by MIT scientists.
B. To introduce the health benefits of spinach.
C. To criticize misleading news on social media.
D. To bring up the topic of a scientific experiment.
33. What is the function of carbon nanotubes in spinach leaves
A. To supply energy to spinach. B. To detect spinach’s lack of water.
C. To measure CO2 absorbed by spinach. D. To make spinach shine in a special way.
34. What do the scientists expect of their system
A. It will take effect immediately. B. It will be applied to agriculture.
C. It will be expanded to other plants. D. It will use a playing card-sized cellphone.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. Scientists teach spinach to send work emails.
B. Scientists create spinach that can test for bombs.
C. Scientists change the composition of spinach we eat.
D. Scientists use nanotechnology to boost spinach production.

Last year, during the summer break, my friends and I decided to go for a walk in the forest. The forest had paths, and we decided that we would hike along the paths and meet at a central point to have a drink later. The whole team had several groups and we had planned on meeting with the rest of the team after three hours. I had a lighter, a partially charged phone, and a bottle of water. We continued on our way towards the deeper part of the forest until we were far from any recognizable trail. After two hours, we were in the deepest part of the forest, and we could not trace our other friends.
All of a sudden, a bear came rushing along our path, and we all run in different directions. After running for about five minutes, I stood alone in a bush. I had no clue about my surroundings as I had never been there before. I shouted at my friends’ names loudly, but all was in vain: there was no reply, and the whole place was silent. I was confused and felt like crying as I realized I was alone with nothing to protect myself. With a lot of fear, I tried to trace the part where I had come from, but all was useless: I was lost.
As I walked along the path trying to locate my friends, I realized that I was tired, and nothing was looking familiar. I was out of food, water, and barely had any battery in my phone. I decided to walk through the bushes as the trees had grown so close together. I squeezed myself between the little trees. After some thirty minutes, it started raining heavily. Though I had heavy clothing, it rained on until I was soaked up. I started freezing and praying to the God for protection and direction out of the forest.

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

One possible version:
With darkness approaching, I tried to figure out various ways of making a signal to my colleagues. After many vain trials, it occurred to me that I had a lighter with me. I was wild with joy and decided to make a signal fire by collecting leaves and lighting them up for my friends to see the fire. Although it had been raining, I was finally successful to light it. Everything in silence, only the cold wind kept me company. I couldn’t help wondering what would have gone wrong because I had never had such kind of experience.
While sitting down and warming myself around the fire, I heard some distant noise. As the sounds got closer, I realized that those were my friends. I jumped with a lot of joy as tears filled my eyes because I knew I was safe. They shouted my name and I replied very loudly. It showed me the importance of the use of the markings and calmness while adventuring in the forest. I also thought to myself that my being lost added a special taste to my life.

W: Hi, Jim. Have you got used to the life here
M: Just so-so. The host is generous and the household equipment is modern. Generally speaking, it feels good.
W: But you look unhappy. Any problems
M: Er, there is only a problem that I can’t stand eating meat or cheese every morning for breakfast.
W: You used to have hamburgers at home, right
M: Yes. And I sometimes have bread and eggs.
W: Don’t worry. I think you should have a talk with your host and ask him to make some changes about the breakfast.
M: I’ll have a try. Thank you.
Text 9
M: You look lost.
M: That’s because I am.
W: You’re a freshman, aren’t you
W: How’d you guess
M: Because I was one myself a couple of years ago. I couldn’t find my physics laboratory till the second week. Well, what are you looking for
W: I’m trying to find Building Q22. It’s supposed to be behind the Flagler Art Hall here, but there’s nothing there but trees that I can see.
M: Where did you get that map
W: Oh, it’s from my guide. See, we’re here. Circle Road, right And here’s the Art Hall, right here, number eighteen... And then Q22 is right here. Behind it. But I still don’t know how to get there.
M: Come on. Let me show you there.
W: Thank you very much. By the way, what does the Q stand for
M: Quonset. It’s an old U. S. Army house. After the Second World War, the government offered returning soldiers an almost free education. But the state universities were flooded with students. A lot of extra classrooms were needed. So some buildings that were no longer needed by the army were used as classrooms. Perfect recycling, eh And there’s one now! Q22!It was built in the forties and then was used as the classroom building since 1960.
W: Wow! It looks so old. We’re still using it
M: Yeah.
