Building with 3D printing technology is sparking widespread interest in the construction industry. Besides reducing waste and our impact on the environment, it can speed up construction from weeks, or months, to days. To see how the technology can change the world around us, here are some projects that highlight bold ideas in 3D print building.
Instant Neighborhood
Community building takes on new meaning with the creation of a neighborhood of 3D printed homes in Tabasco, Mexico, aimed at tackling global homelessness. American non-profit New Story and tech company ICON built each concrete house from start to completion in 24 hours. New Story says its aim is to provide shelter for people without homes around the world.
Nested Housing
Shamballa is the idea of Italian 3D print construction company WASP. This project uses soil and straw to build a home in days that cost only 48 Euros in materials and energy. Its round designs are based on the wasp (黄蜂) nest. Each home features a laboratory with a desktop 3D printer for making furniture, artistic objects and more.
Think Schools
African island state Madagascar is hosting one of the world’s most forward-thinking school building projects. Non-profit Thinking Huts is using 3D print technology to provide schools where children have little or no access to education. Schools are built using local materials and low carbon concrete in under a week.
Concrete Steps
Researchers at the Swiss University ETH Zurich used concrete 3D printing to build the 16 metre long curved Striatus footbridge in a couple of days. The project used 500 layers of concrete and 53 hollow blocks, held in place by compression (压缩). This reduces materials by up to 70 per cent, and the entire bridge can be pulled down and recycled.
1.What could be the inspiration behind the design of Nested Housing

There are people for whom the motivation lies in their family or companions’ duties. For some people, the purpose lies in a soul’s spiritual awakening. Brent Clayton, a firefighter by profession, is one such individual who found his purpose early in life and kept working to fulfill it.
Born on March 3, 1984, Clayton hugely felt the need to serve others. He followed his mission in life and acquired his diploma in Public Safety. He gradually realized the importance of securing people’s lives, which strengthened his faith in his mission. Clayton further pursued his bachelor’s degree from The University of Melbourne and master’s degree from Federation University Australia. Then, Clayton worked in the military for a period before moving into a role with the prison service as a prison guard, the youngest person to ever be employed by the service at the time.
After spending a decade in the fire service including training and recruitment (招募), he gained enough experience to become Australia’s most prominent fire service recruitment expert. Clayton devoted many years of his life to the firefighter recruitment process and fire service industry. He wanted people to realize the true value of this profession by establishing its significance. To communicate his perspective, Clayton established Fire Recruitment Australia in 2009. He aimed to train the next generation and prepare them for the future. Clayton used his experience and years-long training to prepare candidates who were as enthusiastic about the well-being of the world as him.
Keeping the point in mind, Clayton wrote the book Fire Service Recruitment—the Process to Success. His idea was to join his learning into an accessible medium so others didn’t have to waste years wondering what to do when applying to become a firefighter. After the success of the book, Clayton introduced candidates to a comprehensive test preparation and learning suite to facilitate (促进) success throughout each stage of the selection process. This platform helped him as well as his candidates to work together for the betterment of themselves and ultimately society at large.
4.What made Clayton’s belief stronger
A.The military experience. B.The support of his family.
C.The significance of people’s safety. D.The knowledge he learned from college.
5.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “prominent” in paragraph 3
A.Stubborn. B.Fearless. C.Outstanding. D.Energetic.
6.Why did Clayton set up Fire Recruitment Australia
A.Because he could earn a good reputation.
B.Because he wanted to join his learning into an accessible medium.
C.Because he wanted to realize his dream of being a firefighter leader.
D.Because he hoped to get young people ready for their future career.
7.What is the best title for the text
A.A Man with Great Purpose B.A Book for Career Success
C.An Organization for Well-being D.A Standard for Firefighters

Mosquitoes see red when they look at your skin, and that brings them in for a bite, according to new research showing that these insects find certain colors more attractive.
The findings mean that what you wear can reduce your chances of being bitten, but there’s little you can do in terms of your skin. That’s because everyone’s skin gives off a strong red-orange signal that’s highly attractive to mosquitoes.
“I used to say there are three major signals that attract mosquitoes: your breath, your sweat and the temperature of your skin,” said senior study author Jeffrey Riffell, a professor of biology at the University of Washington in Seattle. “In this study, we found a fourth signal: the color red, which can be found not only on your clothes, but also in everyone’s skin. The shade of your skin doesn’t matter, we’ re all giving off a strong red signal.”
Researchers found that when a common species of mosquito called Aedes aegypti detects carbon dioxide (CO2) from our breath, it then looks for specific colors-including red, orange and black — to find its meal of blood. But it ignores colors such as green, purple, blue and white.
“Mosquitoes appear to use smell to help them distinguish what is nearby, like a host to bite,” Riffell said. “When they detect specific compounds, like CO2 from our breath, that smell stimulates the eyes to scan for specific colors and other visual patterns, which are associated with a potential host, and then they head to them.”
That process is similar to when a person smells something good. “Imagine you’ re on a sidewalk and you smell pies,” Riffell said. “That’s probably a sign that there’s a bakery nearby, and you might start looking around for it. Here, we started to learn what visual elements mosquitoes are looking for after smelling their own version of a bakery.”
Knowing which colors do or don’t tempt mosquitoes may lead to better repellents (驱虫剂), traps and other methods to prevent mosquitoes.
8.What does Jeffrey Riffell’s study find
A.Mosquitoes tend to have a preference for bright colors.
B.Mosquito biting depends significantly on your skin color.
C.Mosquito biting has something to do with your clothes.
D.Mosquitoes will avoid biting you when you sweat heavily.
9.Which sense do mosquitoes make use of first in finding a potential target
A.Hearing. B.Sight. C.Smell. D.Touch.
10.The underlined word “tempt” in the last paragraph most probably means “___________”.
A.calm down B.appeal to C.frighten away D.get rid of
11.In which section of a newspaper can the text most probably appear
A.Science, B.Entertainment. C.Fashion. D.Education.

Psychological science is full of interesting topics, many of which tell a coherent picture of human nature, but some of which create seemingly contradictory stories. A case in point is the tricky and misunderstood, overlap(重叠)between strength-based science and the research on narcissism(自恋).
There is now convincing evidence to show that narcissism is on the rise, especially in our youth. Some researchers have gone so far as to say that it is occurring in epidemic proportions, with about 25% of young people showing symptoms of narcissism. The inflated ego(夸大的自我)of Generation Me is reflected in reality TV, celebrity worship, out-of-control consumerism and materialism...perhaps even a new type of president.
We are correct to be concerned about this phenomenon but our fear that all kids are potential narcissists has caused an unhelpful counter-reaction to approaches that seek to make our children and teens feel good about themselves.
In my own research on strength-based parenting it is common for people to wrongly label this approach as a recipe for narcissism. Their argument seems to be that a child who knows their strengths will automatically view themselves as better than everyone else. It is argued that the self-assurance that comes with identifying and using their positive qualities will make a child arrogant, selfish and uncaring. Genuine confidence about one’s strengths is categorized as over-confidence: desirable self-knowledge is branded as excessive self-admiration.
Why does this occur It’s partly because more is known about narcissism than strengths. While strengths psychology has largely stayed within the limit of academic journals or has been applied only within certain contexts such as the workplace, research on narcissism has made its way into the mass media and into our collective consciousness. The New York Times noted that narcissism is a favored “go-to” topic and that people everywhere are diagnosing others with it.
The fear that a strength-based approach will cause narcissism also occurs because we unknowingly fall prey to binary(非此即彼)thinking. We mistakenly believe that one cannot be both confident and humble. We focus on Donald Trump and Kim Kardashian rather than Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa. There’s no way that Gandhi and Mother Teresa could have achieved what they did without confidence in their strengths, and yet they are both pillars of modesty and selflessness.
When we assume that strength-focus is the same as a self-focus, we fail to entertain the idea that people who know their strengths are, actually, more likely to be pro-social and focus on helping others.
It’s tempting to conclude that every young person is at risk of becoming a narcissist but I’d like to stand up for the thousands of young kids I have worked with who are caring, thoughtful and humble---even when they use their strengths.
12.Why teenagers’ strengths are often mistaken for narcissism
A.Academic journals and mass media report more on narcissism.
B.Contradiction is human nature of many people.
C.There is a lack of strengths in our collective consciousness.
D.Numbers of people are diagnosed with narcissism by doctors.
13.The author mentions Gandhi and Teresa in paragraph 6 to show that_______.
A.they are both victims of binary thinking
B.one can be both modest and sure of himself
C.confidence is quite important for celebrities
D.public figures unknowingly fall prey to narcissism
14.What’s the author’s attitude towards young kids’ strength-based approaches
A.Skeptical. B.Favorable. C.Neutral. D.Cautious.
15.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Teens’ Strength Psychology B.Teens’ Narcissism Diagnosis
C.Teens’ Anxiety and Depression D.Teens’ Confidence Misunderstood

My Own Beat
My pulse quickened as my feet took me closer and closer to the door. In my head, I could hear the words my kids kept telling me, “Do it, Mom. You never do anything for yourself. Just follow your dream.” I felt my lungs filled with air and released it.
“What are you doing here You’re a single mom of five. You’re fifty years old!” My thoughts were fighting with my kids’ words. Even so, it was as if I had no control over my feet. As if they were being urged along from somewhere deep inside me.
Finally I gathered my courage, stepped into the hall and signed up for drum classes, which was my childhood dream.
Wednesday came, and along with it my first drum lesson. I walked through the door and headed directly to the seating area in the back. My hands kept fidgeting (动来动去) with the sticks. I kept nervously looking at the time. I tried to slow down my breath. I knew the teacher would say I was not the right type of person to play the drums. I turned around to see an older man looking at me.
“Stephanie I’m Mike, the drum teacher,” he said.
People make me nervous. That’s the way I’ve always been. But Mike had a very calm manner about him, so I relaxed just slightly. Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he complimented me on how well I held the sticks and followed along with him.
“You are fine. I see so much potential in you,” he told me.
Soon my thirty-minute lesson is over. Walking back to my car, I felt full of excitement and energy. I thought of how many times I had driven my kids to their competitions and watched proudly as they bravely went in front of judges and audiences.
Now it felt scary and amazing at the same time to follow my dream and do something that was purely for my enjoyment, something just for me. Maybe one day I would have the chance to stand on the stage.
