第一节 参考范文
June 15, 2021
As planned, I should have attended the Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Show with my best
friend today. However, I didn’t make it. The reason why I wasn’t available was that some
volunteers of our school organized a campaign to raise money for environmental protection. As a
volunteer who is enthusiastic about public welfare, I do need the significant opportunity to make a
contribution to our society. I’m sure that if my best friend were in my situation, he would make
the same choice today. I was sorry that I didn’t keep the appointment. So I made my heartfelt
apology. To my delight, he accepted my apology. Furthermore, I am planning to make up for the
missed show next Saturday afternoon. I hope that it will be convenient for my best friend.
第二节 One possible version:
Para1:
Everyone was shocked to see the blood-spattered mouth. They started to beat the dog. The
poor dog screamed in pain, which was wounded badly soon. Neil could not believe that the dog
seeming to be friendly should be so fierce and even killed his little son. His wife cried sadly while
calling the name of the little son.
Para2:
Hearing the noise from the dog, the babysitter rushed out of the room. She was surprised
why they were beating the dog, so she cried to make them stop. Then, she explained that the dog
saved the boy when he was about to be attacked by some wolves wandering around the cottage.
The dog fought with the wolves and finally killed them. As a result, the boy was not hurt at all.
Neil then realised that the dog was indeed a faithful friend. He also learned not to make decision
in a hurry because haste makes waste.(欲速则不达)

Look at this picture. It’s the London Tea Trade Centre. As you can see, it is on the north bank of

people. Tea is the British national drink. Every man, woman, and child over ten years of age has
on average over four cups a day. Or some one thousand, five hundred cups annually. About thirty
percent of the world’s exports of tea makes its way to London. And Britain is by far the largest
importer of tea in the world. Now, in the second picture, you can see how tea is tasted in the Tea
Trade Centre before it is sold. Here, different types of tea are tasted by skilled tea tasters, before
they’re sold at each week’s tea sale. It’s amazing to see them at work. Over a hundred kinds of tea
are laid out in a line on long tables. The tasters generally taste teas with milk, since that is how the
majority of British people drink their tea. The tasters move down the line with surprising speed,
tasting from a spoon and deciding what is a fair price for each tea. After that, they…

In 1990, Hal Donaldson was 23 years old, fresh out of college and found himself in Calcutta, India, where he was asked to interview Mother Teresa.
Donaldson says about the great woman famed for feeding the hungry, “She wasn’t wearing shoes
and her ankles were swollen. She sat down with me and was very polite.” After the interview, Mother Teresa asked him, “What are you doing to help the poor ” Donaldson admitted that he was young and
wasn’t focused on helping others. With a smile on her face, Mother Teresa said, “Everyone can do
something.”
Those words deeply struck Donaldson and forced him to face some hard truths about himself.
Hal Donaldson grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. When he was 12 years old, his parents
were hit by a drunk driver; his father died, and his mother was seriously injured. To make ends meet, they went on welfare. Donaldson says, “I had holes in my shoes and clothes. When you’re teased at school for that, you just want to escape.”
He managed to do just that. Donaldson got into college and turned his focus to making money for
himself. He says, “I was just trying to find my way out of insignificance. However, it’s easy to overlook others along the way. I was the guy that would see a homeless person and cross the street, so I didn’t have to confront(面对) him. My focus was on climbing to the top instead of helping those trying to climb with me.”
Donaldson returned home from India with a different thought. He traveled to eight cities in America and stayed on the streets and listened to stories of the homeless.“My heart broke,” he says. “I knew I could no longer just live for myself.”
Inspired by Mother Teresa’s words and the stories he’d heard across America, Donaldson loaded a pick-up truck with $300 worth of groceries and handed them out to anyone who needed help. In 1994, Donaldson created the nonprofit organization, Convoy for Hope, which works with communities across America and around the world. Their work focuses on feeding children, women’s empowerment, helping farmers and disaster services

The rolling plains of the Maasai Mara in Kenya are home to Maasai people as well as some most rare animals on the earth.
When it became clear that COVID- 19 would destroy the tourism industry of the Maasai living in
the breathtaking Nashulai Nature Conservancy, they asked Avaaz, a website connecting local people-powered movements, to try and organize a response call for help.
As a result, 100,000 people raised money to help pay the rangers’ (护林人的)salaries, ensuring
that the travel of Nashulai elephants remained safe from poachers(偷猎者). The money was also
enough to secure medical supplies and food for the Maasai community to survive the COVID- 19 storm.
In 2016, Nelson Ole Reiyia and Margaret Koshal Reiyia placed a project on Avaaz to turn their
home into a Nature Conservancy. “Avaazers” around the world offered help with hearts and wallets to launch the Nashulai Maasai Conservancy, to innovatively help the Maasai maintain their traditional way of living in a harmonious way with the land.
The conservancy brought outside money into the community through offering traveling and
camping, as well as cultural homestays and other events. People there also got access to better education as well as more comfortable living conditions.
The Maasai are famous warriors(战士) , and the conservancy built a powerful force against
poachers. Professional rangers and young warriors called “moran” who are trained in bush practices, now serve as “The Warriors for Wildlife Protection”, monitoring the animal populations and protecting against poaching.
COVID- 19 has put much of the conservancy in danger. The tourist infrastructure (基础设施),
which 90% of all the Nashulai Maasai depend on for income, has completely fallen apart. The community library has been repurposed as a storehouse for medical equipment.
“We’ve worked hard to create this unique conservancy, and we want it to be there for the people
in their deepest moment of need,” writes Nelson Ole Reiyia on the Nashulai website.
What did Maasai people get with the help of Avaaz
A. Plans for education reform B. Some financial support.
C. The way to set up a website D. Tips on avoiding COVID-19

Five years ago, French navy officer Jerome Chardon was listening to a radio program about the journey of the bar-tailed godwit, a bird that migrates 14,000 kilometers between New Zealand and Alaska. Chardon understood how treacherous the journey would be, as heavy storms frequently hit Pacific island communities. Yet, somehow, bar-tailed godwits routinely pass through the area uninjured.
Chardon wondered whether learning how birds traveled could help coastal communities avoid natural
disasters.
This past January, a team from France’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) began experiments designed to test Chardon’s idea. Researchers with a project led by Frederic Jiguet from
NMNH equipped 56 birds of five species with cutting-edge animal tracking technology. The team
members were ferried to remote islands in French Polynesia, where they attached tags(标签) using
tracking technology. These tags sent the birds’ locations to the International Space Station, which
bounced the data back to scientists on Earth who could then follow the birds—waiting to see how the birds responded to natural disasters.
The project is focusing on birds’ ability to hear infrasound, the low-frequency sound humans
cannot hear but that the researchers believe is the most likely signal birds would use to sense storms and tsunamis(海啸). In a 2014 study, scientists tracking a kind of golden-winged birds in the central and southeastern America found that the birds flew up to 1,500 kilometers to escape from an outbreak of tornadoes(龙卷风) that killed 35 people. The birds fled at least 24 hours before any extreme weather hit, leaving the scientists to believe that they had heard the storm system from more than 400 kilometers away.
The team plans on tagging hundreds more birds across the Pacific to prepare for a potential
tsunami. “I think if there’s one wave that spreads across islands, we can get data from different species at different locations,” says Jiguet. “That will say it’s worth continuing to tag and to develop
local systems to better analyze this. There are chances that we will develop a bird-based tsunami early
warning system.”
