A
The Best Time To Visit Masai Mara
High season
Months: June, July, August, September & October
These are the best months to visit the Masai Mara as it is the long dry season with little or no rainfall. It is easy to spot animals as the bush is less thick and animals gather around available water sources and rivers. It is the best time to witness the Great Migration herds. Accommodation cost will also be high, and as this is the busiest period, so bookings in advance are essential!
Green season
Months: April, May & November
The long rains occur during April and May and short rains in November. Mornings are usually clear and dry, with clouds building into dramatic thunderstorms by late afternoon. A plus to travel during the green season is that fewer people are travelling, which means fewer people and low lodge(旅舍)prices. Some of the lodges and camps close down during these months.
Shoulder season
Months: December, January, February & March
These shoulder months are a time of transition(过渡). Temperatures start to fall off, and migratory birds move on. Animals start to gather in areas where they know there will be water. For birdwatchers they are the best months, as in addition to the resident species, migratory birds, coming here from Europe to spend the winter, are also present. January and February are the best months to witness the birth of wildebeest, zebra and antelope.
21.What is special about the high season
A.It rains a lot. B.Lodge prices are high.
C.More birds migrate here. D.Many zebras are born.
22.When can you spend the least money travelling to Masai Mara
A.In September. B.In October. C.In November. D.In December.
23.What is the text
A.A travel guide. B.A news report.
C.A children’s story. D.A diary entry.

Nearly seven years ago, I hitchhiked(搭顺风车)across Canada. It was a curious experience, but probably not what people imagine. Frankly, it was rather boring. But it gave me some understanding of the complexities of humans.
The contrast between boredom and excitement on the road is quite striking. For hours on end, you may be standing at the side of a highway, watching faces go by. You get all sorts of looks when you're hitchhiking. People ignore you, smile at you, wave or use their hands to gesture that they're unable to pick you up. Often, truckers pick you up.
Once, I was dropped off in front of an elderly woman. She said her car had broken down and that her husband was on his way with a tow truck(拖车). Later, she and her husband offered to bring me back to their place for lunch. I happily agreed. The woman sat in the middle seat of the tow truck and I sat in the passenger seat. Our communication became a funny event of translations. I could not figure out what her husband was saying. He spoke English, but his dialect made it almost impossible for me to understand. Every time he spoke to me, I'd have to say, "I'm sorry, what did you say " Then his wife would step in to translate.
When I explained I was hitchhiking coast-to-coast for fun, they were both amazed and impressed. Then, a look of understanding appeared on the woman's face. “Oh!" she said. “You remind me of that guy, what's his name…" She thought hard for a couple of minutes, then: “Terry Fox!”
The flow of randomness(随机)and the constant impermanence(无常)was what I enjoyed about hitchhiking. We have non-stop social interactions that are deeply authentic but so finite only in a short time. A person becomes an important part of our life for an hour or two and then he or she disappears. The beauty of strangers being so open about their lives never gets old and they paint a picture of harmony in this country.
24.What does the author intend to show in Paragraph 2
A.Truckers aren't willing to pick up passers-by.
B.Hitchhikers tend to be looked down upon.
C.Waiting for a lift isn't always a pleasant experience.
D.People gesture to hitchhikers in the same way.
25.How was the communication between the author and the tow trucker
A.It went smoothly. B.It was difficult.
C.It sounded ridiculous. D.It was boring.
26.What can we infer about "Terry Fox"
A.He was a young trucker. B.He hitchhiked for travelling.
C.He often helped hitchhikers. D.He looked like the author.
27.What does the underlined word "finite" in the last paragraph mean
A.Limited. B.Independent. C.Different. D.Disturbing.
C
Deforestation (滥伐森林) last year rose to the highest level since 2015 in Brazil’s Cerrado, prompting scientists on Monday to raise alarm over the state of the world’s most species-rich savanna (热带草原), a major carbon sink that helps to hold off climate change.
The Cerrado, which spreads across several states of Brazil and is one of the world’s largest savannas, is often called an “upside-down forest” because of the deep roots its plants sink into the ground to survive seasonal droughts and fires.
Deforestation and other clearances of native plants in the Cerrado rose 8 percent to 8,531 square kilometers in the 12 months through July, Brazil’s official period for measuring deforestation, according to national space research agency INPE. That is more than 10 times the size of New York City’s land area of 783.84 square km.
“It’s extremely worrying,” said Mercedes Bustamante, an ecologist at the University of Brasilia. Bustamante also criticized the government for a lack of transparency in announcing the deforestation data on New Year’s Eve.
The added destruction is particularly concerning. Roughly half of the Cerrado has been destroyed since the 1970s, mostly for farming and ranching “You’re transforming thousands of square kilometers annually,” said Manuel Ferreira, a geographer at the Federal University of Goias. “Few other places on earth have seen that rapidity of a transformation.”
Ferreira said that new plant and animal species are regularly being discovered in the Cerrado but he added that many are probably being eradicated before they can be studied.
After falling from highs in the early 2000s, deforestation in the Cerrado has been increasing again since right-wing President took office in 2019, calling for more farming and development in sensitive ecosystems. Bustamante and other scientists blame the President for encouraging deforestation with his pro-development rhetoric and for rolling back environmental enforcement.
28.Why is Cerrado called “upside-down forest”
A.Because of its large size.
B.Because of seasonal droughts and fires.
C.Because of the existence of the deep roots.
D.Because of its fast deforestation.
29.What do the figures in paragraph 3 show
A.The large size of Cerrado. B.The fast pace of deforestation.
C.The small area of New York City. D.Brazil’s measures to protect savannas.
30.What does the underlined word “eradicated” in paragraph 6 mean
A.Extinct. B.Transformed. C.Conveyed. D.Powered.
31.Which of the following statement is related to the President’s policy
A.Transforming forests to farms.
B.Returning farmlands to forests.
C.Calling on more people to protect forests.
D.Trying to protect the environment at any cost.
D
Sharks may be able to smell blood from miles away, but they probably don't know how red it is. It is likely that they only see the world in black and white according to a study that is the first to look into sharks’ visual systems.
A team at the University of Western Australia studied the visual systems of many different species of sharks and what they have found is diversity in eye design that mirrors the ecological and behavioral diversity of the shark species. The team looked at the retinal cells of 17 species of sharks caught from Queensland and Western Australia and found out that the cells are responsible for sharks’ color blindness.
According to the study, these animals are color-blind due to the light receptors they have got in their eyes. There are two main types of light-sensitive cells to allow animals to see: rod cells help measure brightness because they are highly sensitive to light and allow night vision but cannot tell colors apart, while various types of cone cells help distinguish colors. They looked at the structure of sharks' rod and cone cells in the retina. Human eyes come with red, green and blue cone variations, while sharks appear to have just one kind of cone cell.
The study suggests that contrast against the background, rather than color itself, might be more important for object detection by sharks. Costumes that camouflage swimmers’ bodies in sea water are less likely to draw a shark’s attention than ones with bright, solid colors that emphasize their outline. “It’s the high contrast against the water rather than the color itself which is probably attractive to sharks,” said Professor Nathan Hart who led the study.
32.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.Stressing the importance of the study.
B.Showing the features of sharks’ eye design.
C.Giving the process and the result of the study.
D.Telling the functions of sharks’ visual systems.
33.What leads to sharks’ blindness to color according to Paragraph 3
A.Their less sensitive rod cells. B.Their lack of various cone cells.
C.Their inability to tell apart colors. D.Their strong sensitivity to brightness.
34.What can be inferred in the last paragraph
A.The color plays a key part in sharks' detecting objects.
B.You should make your outline stand out in the sea for your safety.
C.You should be dressed in bright color to avoid sharks’ attention in the sea.
D.Sharks are more interested in sharp contrast against the water rather than your body.
35.What’s the writing purpose of the text
A.To challenge a traditional belief.
B.To inform us a scientific discovery.
C.To amuse us with interesting information.
D.To raise our awareness of protecting wild animals.

When you sleep, do you ever realize that you are dreaming If yes, then you have had a lucid dream (清醒梦). ___36___ Only some people are able to have them. Now, scientists have found ways to help more people to have lucid dreams, Live Science reported.
Denholm Aspy from the University of Adelaide in Australia found that certain skills are key to helping people have lucid dreams.
First, people can train themselves to figure out whether they are dreaming or not. For example, someone may look at a clock, look away, and then look back. ___37___ Then, they might dream about this trick while sleeping. But in their dreams, the time on the clock may change very quickly. So people know they are dreaming.
Another trick is to wake up after five hours of sleep. ___38___ During this time, repeat the words, “The next time I’m dreaming, I’ll remember that I’m dreaming.” Then, go to bed again to enter rapid eye movement (REM,快速眼球运动) sleep. In REM sleep, people are more likely to be aware of their dreams.
Scientists found that those who used these tricks had a 17 percent success rate at having lucid dreams. ___39___
In a lucid dream, people might study a hobby and then become better at it in real life, according to Aspy. For example, you might learn to play the piano in a lucid dream. ___40___
A.Then, stay awake for a while.
B.The time should stay the same.
C.This was far higher than if they did nothing.
D.People learn new skills faster in a lucid dream.
E.It is hard for most people to have a lucid dream.
F.Then, your real-life piano skills might improve.
G.Some people will need more time to fall asleep and have a dream.

At noon that day, I drove back home early. Just as I entered the living room, I heard a slight sound coming from the bedroom upstairs. It was the sound of my favorite violin. But I was the only person who lived in this house.
It must be a thief! I rushed upstairs. Just as what I had thought about, a boy of about 12 years old was petting my violin. At first sight, I found a new pair of shoes at the bed missing. It seemed he was surely a thief.
Then, I saw his eyes full of fear and helplessness. My anger was immediately replaced by a smile. I asked, “Are you Mr Brian's nephew Rubens I'm his housekeeper. Two days ago, Mr Brian said that he has a nephew who lives in the countryside would visit him. It must be you. You are really like him!”
The boy was surprised, but then quickly replied, “Has my uncle gone out I think I'd better first go out for a walk and visit him in a while.”
I nodded and asked the boy who was preparing to put down the violin, “Do you want to play the violin ”
“Yes. I am fond of playing the violin and I'm looking forward to having my own violin, but I'm so poor that I can't afford one,” the boy replied.
“Then, I'll give this violin to you because your uncle, Mr Brian, is so kind a man.” The boy looked at me doubtfully, but he picked up the violin. Going out of the living room, he suddenly saw my huge color photo on the wall. He shook for a moment and ran out without looking back.
I was sure that the boy must understand what had happened after seeing the photo on the wall.

I thought the story would end forever if I didn't happen to meet him a few years later. I was invited to judge a music competition. During the competition, a boy violin player drew my attention. From time to time, he also had a look in my direction with a strange smile on his face. I was sure I must have met him before, but I failed to think of where and when we had met at the very moment. Finally, he won first prize because of his excellent performance!
After the award ceremony, he ran to me holding a violin box. With his face red, he asked, “Mr Brian, do you still remember me You gave me your violin, which I have been treasuring until today! You can't imagine how much what you did that noon means to me! Today, I can give it back to you without regret…” Believe it or not, it turned out that this boy was “Mr Brian's nephew Rubens”! Tears welled up in my eyes.

The word “pub” is the short form for “public house” in England. It is supposed to be the Englishmen’s favorite meeting place, where they can get together with friends over a pint of beer and talk about football, horse racing, or business. Pubs are usually open from 11 am to 12 pm. You may notice that the pub is the Englishmen’s meeting place. It is not quite respectable for a woman to go into a pub alone. She must have a man to go with her. Perhaps that’s partly the reason why pubs disappoint me — they are intended mainly for men’s interests. Most Englishmen have their favorite local pubs, where they can escape from the pressure of family life or work, and if they are lucky, they can tell their troubles to a pretty bar-girl. Indeed, many men dream of leaving their jobs and buying a little country pub, where they imagine they always be the host of a one-week-long party.

第二段第一句“The contrast between boredom and excitement on the road is quite striking.”
根据文章第三段“He spoke English, but his dialect made it almost impossible for me to understand. Every time he spoke to me, I'd have to say, "I'm sorry, what did you say " Then his wife would step in to translate.(他说英语,但他的方言使我几乎听不懂。
画线词上文“The flow of randomness(随机)and the constant impermanence(无常)was what I enjoyed about hitchhiking.” 画线词下文“A person becomes an important part of our life for an hour or two and then he or she disappears. ”提到,作者在搭顺风车途中遇到的人成为他生命中的重要部分,停留了一两个小时然后就消失了。因此他们之间的交流是真实的,在短时间内却是有限的,由此可知画线词词义为“有限的”,故选A项。

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了巴西塞拉多森林砍伐严重,森林破坏尤其令人担忧。
8.细节理解题。由第二段“The Cerrado, which spreads across several states of Brazil and is one of the world’s largest savannas, is often called an “upside-down forest” because of the deep roots its plants sink into the ground to survive seasonal droughts and fires. (塞拉多分布在巴西的几个州,是世界上最大的热带草原之一,由于其植物深深扎根于地下以抵御季节性干旱和火灾,因此常被称为“本末倒置的森林”)”可知,因为根很深,塞拉多被称为“本末倒置的森林”。故选C项。
9.推理判断题。由第三段“Deforestation and other clearances of native plants in the Cerrado rose 8 percent to 8,531 square kilometers in the 12 months through July, Brazil’s official period for measuring deforestation, according to national space research agency INPE. That is more than 10 times the size of New York City’s land area of 783.84 square km. (据巴西国家空间研究机构INPE的数据,截至7月的12个月里,塞拉多的森林砍伐和其他原生植物清除量增加了8%,达到8531平方公里。7月是巴西官方的森林砍伐测量期。这是纽约市783.84平方公里土地面积的10倍多)”可知,塞拉多的森林砍伐和其他原生植物清除量增加了8%,砍伐面积增大,可得出所有数据显示了塞拉多森林砍伐速度增快。故选B项。
10.词句猜测题。由第五段中的““You’re transforming thousands of square kilometers annually,” said Manuel Ferreira, a geographer at the Federal University of Goias. (联邦戈亚斯大学的地理学家曼努埃尔·费雷拉说:“每年都在改造数千平方公里的土地。”)”和第六段“Ferreira said that new plant and animal species are regularly being discovered in the Cerrado but he added that many are probably being eradicated before they can be studied. (费雷拉说,在塞拉多经常发现新的动植物物种,但他补充说,许多物种可能在被研究之前就eradicated)”可知,塞拉多经常发现新的动植物物种,但塞拉多森林砍伐严重,森林砍伐被改造成土地,新的动植物物种不复存在,在被科学家研究前就消灭了,eradicated在此处意为“消灭(Extinguished)”。故选A项。
由最后一段“After falling from highs in the early 2000s, deforestation in the Cerrado has been increasing again since right-wing President took office in 2019, calling for more farming and development in sensitive ecosystems. Bustamante and other scientists blame the President for encouraging deforestation with his pro-development rhetoric and for rolling back environmental enforcement. (塞拉多的森林砍伐量从21世纪初的高点开始下降,自右翼总统2019年上台以来,塞拉多的森林砍伐量再次增加,呼吁在敏感的生态系统中进行更多的农业和发展。布斯塔曼特和其他科学家指责总统用支持发展的言辞鼓励砍伐森林,并减少环境执法)”可知,塞拉多的森林砍伐量再次增加,是因为总统要用土地支持农业发展,可得出A项“将森林改造成农场”与总统的政策有关。故选A项。

根据第二段内容“A team at the University of Western Australia studied the visual systems of many different species of sharks and what they have found is diversity in eye design that mirrors the ecological and behavioral diversity of theshark species. The team looked at the retinal cells of 17 species of sharks caught off Queensland and Western Australia and found out that the cells are responsible for sharks' color blindness.(西澳大利亚大学的一个研究小组研究了许多不同种类鲨鱼的视觉系统,他们发现眼睛设计的多样性反映了鲨鱼物种的生态和行为多样性。研究小组观察了在昆士兰和西澳大利亚海域捕获的17种鲨鱼的视网膜细胞,发现这些细胞导致了鲨鱼的色盲) ”可知,第二段主要介绍了这项研究的过程和结果。故选C项。
13.细节理解题,根据第三段中“while various types of cone cells help distinguish colors”(而有多种视锥细胞才能有助于区分颜色)以及“Human eyes come with red, green and blue cone variations, while sharks appear to have just one kind of cone cell.(人类的眼睛有红绿蓝三种视锥细胞变化,而鲨鱼只有一种视锥细胞)”可知,由于鲨鱼只有一种视锥细胞无法区分颜色,从而导致鲨鱼色盲。故选B项。
根据最后一段中“It's the high contrast against the water rather than the color itself which is probably attractive to sharks(对鲨鱼来说,最吸引人的可能是与水形成的强烈对比,而不是颜色本身)”可推知,鲨鱼更感兴趣的是与水的强烈对比,而不是你的身体。故选D项。
根据文章第一段第二句“It is likely that they only see the world in black and white according to a study that is the first to investigate sharks' visual system.(一项首次对鲨鱼视觉系统进行调查的研究显示,鲨鱼眼中的世界很可能只有黑白两色)”和最后一段中“The study suggests that contrast against the background, rather than color itself, might be more important for object detection by sharks.(这项研究表明,检测鲨鱼的目标发现,背景的反差可能比颜色本身更重要)”可知,文章的主要目的是告诉我们一项关于鲨鱼的科学发现。故选B项。
