I spent time at my father's house and mountain cabin this weekend, both of which have plug -in electric kettles. I enjoyed how quickly they boiled water, plus it's kind of nice to not have to run across the house to stop the unbearable scream of the whistle( 哨 声 ) , My father was shocked that I didn't own one, but I explained that I value the classic design of my Revere Ware kettle and I enjoy boiling water on the stove for my tea.
However, I'm nothing if not practical. I have a gas stove and the price of natural gas has been coming up, which isn't ending any time soon. We're not as bad as Europe, where people are removing their beloved stoves due to skyrocketing gas prices, but it's certainly worth considering the cost of gas vs. electricity. The gas company is rolling out a 25% rate increase, which made me dive down this rabbit hole.
It's not easy to compare gas to electric costs, as an electric kettle uses 1. 5 kilowatts to boil water and it takes 6428 British therm units (BTUs)to boil water using a standard gas stove. Of course, the gas company uses "therms", and there are 1. 00024e-5 therms in one BTU. 1 kWh=0. 0341296 therms and I pay 14.47e/kWh for electricity and 61. 458≠/therm for gas. So you can see why you almost need an advanced mathematics degree to puzzle out the cost of heating a kettle on the gas stove vs. a plug-in electric. Of course you also have to consider that you're not actually boiling water for a full hour
I never got even close to a point where I could do the math, but I did come to the conclusion that I could stop mindlessly filling the entire kettle when I'm having just a single cup of tea. Plus my low-tech kettle was produced without planned obsolescence( 过 时 )and should last for a very long time. No additional purchases necessary.
24. What does the author think of her father's electric kettles
A. They cause annoying noise B. They are inconvenient to use
C. They are classic in design. D. They lose some traditional flavor
25. What do the underlined words "dive down this rabbit hole" probably mean in paragraph 2
A. Hold a negative attitude to life. B. Consider moving somewhere else
C. Get into an awkward situation. D. Study how to escape like a rabbit
26. Why are the figures mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To stress an advanced math degree is rewarding
B. To show it's hard to make an economical choice
C. To prove the gas company has overcharged users
D. To explain the author is a price-sensitive consumer
27. What might the author do with her old kettle
A. Keep using it. B. Upgrade it. C. Replace it. D. Sell it

Older adults often complain about the loss of the good old days when neighbors were friends instead of strangers, and everyone in the neighborhood left their doors unlocked. While home security is one thing, interesting new research out of Rutgers University has found that feeling connected to one's neighbors appears to promote better health outcomes.
About 27 percent of people aged 60 or older live alone in the USA, according to the Pew Research Center. Living alone has been linked to a number of unfavourable health outcomes such as heart disease, depression, and poor overall biological health. So, researchers believed it important to identify which factors may or may not help reduce the negative effects of living alone.
The project focused on neighborhood cohesion(凝聚力 )among Chinese Americans living within the greater Chicago area. Study authors investigated if perceptions of trust and connection among neighbors had an impact on the death risk among that population. Subjects living alone, and reporting minimal interactions or connections with their neighbors, had a 48.5 percent increased risk of death in comparison to those living with other people Meanwhile, people who lived alone and reported strong cohesion with their neighborhood displayed death risks very similar to those living with others.
Establishing a clearer understanding of how different types of neighborhoods may influence locals' health outcomes can help in the creation of new social policies and public health initiatives aimed at promoting better, more inclusive neighborhood environments.
"Our findings show the particular challenges faced by older adults who live alone in communities with little interaction, " concludes Yanping Jiang, author of the study. Enhancing neighborhood cohesion may be a promising way to reduce early death for older adults. "
Future studies should focus on additional contributors involved in neighborhoods, and how they may or may not influence the health of older adults. On an individual level, we can all do our part. Consider being just a little friendlier to your neighbors, especially those who live alone.
28. What can we learn about old people living alone in America
A. They account for 27% of the US population.
B. They are responsible for social insecurity.
C. Their health deserves more attention.
D. Their problems are quite uncommon
29. What contributes to lower death risks among the old according to the study
A. The number of family members B. Neighbours’ health conditions
C. A strong connection with nature D. An interelativeship with the neighbours
30. What do the researchers plan to do next
A. Widen the range of subjects. B. Focus on seniors'
C. Identify other potential factors D. Establish better health students
31. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Get to Know Your Neighbors B. Watch Your Overall
C. Choose a Safer Neighborhood D. Say No to Living Alone
D
Type in words like "a chocolate bar riding a bicycle in the style of Picasso" and articial intelligence tools like Stable Diffusion can produce an image for you in seconds. Midjourney CEO David Holz compared the process behind his image generating service to the process behind human creativity, which often involves drawing inspiration from other artists. "Can a person look at somebody else's picture and learn from it and make a similar picture " Holz said. "Obviously, it's allowed for people and if it wasn't, then it would destroy the whole professional art industry, probably the nonprofessional industry too.

It was a beautiful sunny day when Martin went out into the backyard. It would have been a perfect day to play. But Martin wasn't out there to play.
Two months before, so interested had Martin been in playing the flute( 长 笛 )that he asked his mother to buy him the expensive flute and promised to practice at least thirty minutes every day. But it can be difficult to concentrate on a flute when your room is full of cool stuff like a TV, video games and the Internet. So Martin's mother sent him to the backyard to practice, where there would be no distractions( 分 心 的 事 物 ) .
Martin sat down on the grass and brought the flute to his lips. He began doing his fingering exercises with his eyes closed. You have to close your eyes when you want to concentrate on stuff. Anyway, he played for a good forty or fifty seconds before he heard a familiar sound:"Hey, Martin!"
He looked in the direction of the voice and saw the face of his friend, his next-door neighbor, Kris, who was smiling at him from the fence.
"I just got a new movie!" he said. "Want to come over and check it out "
Well, that was exactly what Martin wanted to do. He loved movies but he shook his head and said sorry. Kris seemed disappointed that Martin had said no. But he also understood that Martin had to practice a lot when learning a musical instrument. So he left and watched the film by himself
Martin was alone with his flute. He closed his eyes and started his fingering exercises again. But he couldn't concentrate. He wasn't anything like his father, a biologist. Martin had been to his lab many times. He couldn't understand why his father could concentrate on his researches for so long a time. When he was thinking, his father came over

Career Planning
Career planning is an essential exercise for senior students, because career is a crucial part of who we are, thus defining our future life to some extent.
Unfortunately, many students struggle with career planning with just a few ideas bouncing around in their heads, leading to stress or lack of motivation. To overcome these challenges, we students can complete a "career aptitude test" to get some insight on a possible career. If still in a dilemma, we can turn to parents or teachers for advice.
By prioritizing career planning, we are bound to excel in our academic and personal lives.
第二节
His father smiled when he noticed Martin's absent-mindedness. He sat beside Martin, which made the young boy a little nervous. He was afraid that his father would blame him. Instead, Dad gently said, "When I was about your age, I had a strong passion for everything to do with nature. Interest comes first. But daily persistence is equally important. That makes what I am today. I think you should ask yourself one question: Are you really interested in playing the flute and becoming a good flute player "
Martin felt ashamed and then he nodded, saying he hoped to be a great flute player. Throwing his father a determined look, Martin took a deep breath and set his mind to the flute. So absorbed was he in the playing that he forgot about the time. Thirty minutes passed in a flash, which turned out to be unexpectedly enjoyable. It was right then that Martin realized if he moved forward every day with the same passion, persistence and drive that had brought him this far, he could reach his goal of being a great flute player.

M:Hello, everyone. I am Wei Guangming, an ordinary waste collector, born in China's Anhui Province in 1972. I have worked in Shaoxing for over ten years. Now I live in a 15 square-meter flat in the city. It is my personal art studio, too. Many people know me because of my oil painting skills. In the past I taught myself how to do oil paintings during my free time. Now I am excellent at oil painting. Up till now, I have completed over 1, 000 oil paintings. Many of them have been ordered by my customers. I am able to receive plenty of painting orders, about 30 paintings each month. I send most of my income to my family living in my hometown. I only leave myself a little to buy some necessary things. Every day, I get up at six in the morning to start my daily painting routine . Then I spend the whole afternoon working as a waste collector . I love painting very much. And my dream is to go to an art college to learn painting.
