Writing: Writing an ending to a story

Lesson type Writing Lesson duration 45 minutes
I. Analysis of the teaching material What: The theme is Man and Society. The text introduces Bob’s story after he was released from jail.
Why: The author wants students to write an ending to Bob’s story, helping cultivate students’ creativity and release their imagination. Also, the author wants students to realize the true meaning of friendship.
How: The writer mainly writes the plot from beginning, development, climax, ending. He describes the story from three aspects:settings, characters, actions. Also, he uses conversations to develop the plot.
II. Analysis of students Students at Senior 1 are interested in writing a story about a man meeting his friend again after he got out of jail. They have already known some basic elements about a story, that is, setting, characters, plot in the previous reading lesson. However, they still want to know how to write the story according to its development, and polish the story from settings, characters, actions and conversations. It’s necessary for teacher to take their ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) into consideration and construct their own ending to the story by scaffolding.

T asks Ss to retell the story according to the pictures.

Stage 2 Pre-writing (12mins) Activity 2:Fast reading (5mins)
T asks Ss to read Bob’s story quickly. Then, Ss answer the question and do the matching.
T and Ss sort out structure of the story together.
Activity 3: Careful reading (7mins)
T asks Ss to read the ending again, find out the expressions that describe settings, characters, actions and conversations.
T guides Ss to figure out how the writer describes the story step by step.
This activity helps students identify the plot of the story by skimming and shows a structure of writing a new ending to the story.

Stage 3 While-writing (15mins) Activity 4: Group writing (15mins)
Each group needs to write a new ending to Bob’s story after he was out of jail.
Four students of a group play different roles in the whole writing.
Group discussion (5mins):
Each group needs to discuss the following questions.
Question1: What type of ending will it be?
A happy ending. A sad ending.
A surprise ending. An open ending.
Question2: Do you want to introduce new characters in the ending
Question 3: When and where will the ending take place
Question 4: Each group discusses a new plot after Bob was released from jail by finishing the mind map.
After discussion, students begin their writing.
Requirements:
1.Pay attention to the logic and the coherence.
2.Describe the story from 4 aspects:settings, characters, actions, and conversations.
3.No less than 100 words.
4.Ten minutes for writing. This activity belongs to the level of application according to the View on English Learning Activities. Group writing helps students improve the efficiency of writing by cooperation.
Group discussion can help Ss what they need to write before the writing.

A friend walks in when the rest of world walks out. Someone who makes you laugh until you can’t stop. Someone who makes you believe that there really is good in the world. Someone who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it. This is forever friendship. In the activity, students can learn other groups and receive feedback from others.
This activity guides students to make necessary improvements in their writing. Also, students can learn from each other and learn from the teachers’ comments.
The activity belongs to the level of creation according to the View on English Learning Activities. The activity helps students explore the true meaning of friendship and cultivates their critical thinking. Besides, students can have a deeper understanding of friendship by appreciating the poem.
