Why I Hate Cats
My name is Oreo, and I’m a ten-year-old, black-and-white Portuguese Water Dog. I’m well-mannered, polite, and friendly. But there is one thing that does set me off: cats. Frankly, I can’t stand them. With their messy hair, beady little eyes, and pointy teeth, they just set my curly coat on end.
I’m particularly not fond of the cat — the gray-colored creature across the street. If she would just stay in her house or even her yard, it wouldn’t be so bad. But, unlike me, she gets to go wherever she wants. No collar, no leash, and no boundaries from what I can see.
Like any responsible pet, I generally stay within my owners’ enclosed back yard. And when I do go out, it’s on a leash held by a human and attached to a collar. Ms. Gray Puss, on the other hand, wanders collarless across the street any time she likes. She even does her business anywhere and anytime she prefers, including on my owners’ lawn.
If she would just stay off my property, I’d be okay with her superior airs and standoffish attitude. But that’s not how she rolls. Sometimes, she comes over and pollutes my owners’ front garden, knowing full well that I’m only a few yards away on the other side of the fence and powerless to stop her.
Sometimes, when my owner takes me for a walk, I’ll spot that animal and take a run at her. Unfortunately, I always forget that I’m on a leash. Before I know it, I’m being dragged backwards. What’s particularly awkward is that the gray one doesn’t even move. I guess she knows I can’t get at her, and that’s why she doesn’t even deign to get up on all fours and at least hiss at me.
Mark my words: Someday, one of my owners will forget to lock the front gate, one of the fence boards will fall off, or my male owner Dave will forget to fully secure the leash. And when that day comes, someone’s going to suffer. I’m not sure why, but Dave keeps saying he thinks it will be me.
4. What do the underlined words “set me off” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. To see me off. B. To make me laugh.
C. To make me annoyed. D. To set out.
5. Who is number one on my hate list
A. Ms. Gray Puss. B. Dave. C. Oreo. D. Portuguese Water Dog.
6. Why do I hate Ms. Gray Puss
A. Because she always shows off in front of me.
B. Because I envy her freedom.
C. Because she pollutes my owner’s front garden.
D. Because she walks around without a leash.
7. What does Dave mean by keeping saying he thinks it will be me
A. It’ll be my fault to forget to lock the front door.
B. It’ll be careless of me to forget to secure the leash.
C. It will be I who will suffer if anything mentioned above happens.
D It will be I who will break the fence boards.

Snapchat is rolling out parental controls that allow parents to see their teenager’s contacts and report to the social media company — without their child’s knowledge — any accounts that may worry them.
The goal executives say, is to enable parents to monitor their child’s connections without giving up teens’ autonomy (自主性). Named Family Center, the new suite of tools released Tuesday requires both caregiver and teen to be involved in.
“It allows parents to see who’s in their teen’s universe,” said Nona Farahnik, director of platform policy for Snap, the company that makes Snapchat. “It offers parents the ability to ask who someone might be, how they might know a contact, which improves those real-time conversations about who teens are talking to.”
Farahnik says Family Center is modeled on real-life parenting. “If your teen is headed to the mall, you might ask who they’re going with. ‘How do you know them Are you guys on a sports team together Do you go to school together ’” said Farahnik. “But you won’t be sitting there at the mall with them listening to their conversations.” Similarly, parents cannot see the content that their teen is sending or receiving on Snapchat. They can only view whom their child has communicated with in the past seven days. Snapchat is popular with young people, partially because messages on the platform disappear within 24 hours.
The company says it consulted with safety experts and academics and conducted focus groups with parents to develop Family Center and it plans to roll out more features in the coming months. The tool is only for parents of kids under 18.
With Family Center, Snap follows other social media platforms, including Instagram, which recently have advanced parental controls. By at least one survey, Snapchat is the second-most popular social network among teens. The first, TikTok, offers “Family Sharing,” which gives parents a few ways to limit the videos shown to their kids.
“I think these platforms want to show that they can take steps to protect kids, that they can self-regulate and that they’re capable of doing it themselves without getting the government involved,” said Irene Ly, policy counsel for Common Sense Media, which reviews apps, games and media for families.
8. Who are probably the potential users of Family Center
A. Children who love computer games. B. Parents who worry about their children.
C. Parents whose children are under 18. D. Family members who live in harmony.
9. What can we learn about Family Center
A. It enables parents to know what their children talk about.
B. Parents can read messages sent or received by their children.
C. Children can cancel messages on their phones within 24 hours.
D. Parents can know who their children contact without children’s permission.
10. Why do young people favor Snapchat
A. Because they can know whom they have communicated with.
B. Because contact information on it can’t be read a day later.
C. Because it offers a few ways to limit the videos shown to them.
D. Because parents can monitor their connections without giving up autonomy.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Family Center: Snapchat’s new parental controls
B. Family Sharing: TikTok’s new parental controls
C. Snapchat: A popular social media company
D. Snapchat: A platform imitates real-life parenting
D
Here’s a fun brain teaser: How large does a random group of people have to be for there to be a 50% chance that at least two of the people will share a birthday The answer is 23, which surprises many people. How is this possible
When thinking about this question, known as the “birthday problem” or the “birthday paradox” in statistics, many people intuitively (直觉地) guess 183, since that is half of all possible birthdays, given how there are generally 365 days in a year. Unfortunately, intuition often fares poorly at this kind of statistical problem.
To calculate the answer to the birthday problem, Jim Frost, a statistician who has written three books about statistics and is a regular columnist for the American Society of Quality’s Statistics Digest, began with a few assumptions. First, he ignores leap years, since that simplifies the math and does not change the results by much. He also assumed that all birthdays have an equal chance of happening. If you start with a group of two people, the chance the first person does not share a birthday with the second is 364/365. As such, the likelihood they share a birthday is 1 minus (364/365)1, or a probability of about 0.27%. If you assume a group of three people, the first two people cover two dates. This means the chance the third person does not share a birthday with the other two is 363/365. As such, the likelihood they all share a birthday is 1 minus the product of (364/365) times (363/365), or a probability of about 0.82%.The more people in a group, the greater the chances that at least a pair of people will share a birthday. With 23 people, there is a 50.73% chance, Frost noted. With 57 people, there is a probability of 99%.“
The birthday problem is related to another exponential (指数的) growth problem, Frost noted. “In exchange for some service, suppose you’re offered to be paid 1 cent on the first day, 2 cents on the second day, 4 cents on the third, 8 cents, 16 cents, and so on, for 30 days,” Frost said. “Is that a good deal Most people think it’s a bad deal, but thanks to exponential growth, you’ll have a total of $10.7 million on the 30th day.”
12. What is the purpose of asking questions at the beginning of the passage
A. To present a fact. B. To answer the questions.
C. To stimulate reader’s curiosity. D. To surprise readers.
13 What does the underlined phrase “fare poorly” mean in paragraph 2
A. Charge little. B. Behave well.
C. Make mistakes. D. Earn little.
14. What is the exact probability that no one of the 23 students has the same birthday
A. 50%. B. 50.73%. C. 49.27%. D. 99%.
15 How can you earn $10.7 million in a month according to Frost
A. By multiplying the salary of the previous day by the salary of the next day.
B. By daydreaming of becoming a millionaire.
C. By making your salary of the next day twice that of the previous day.
D. By working hard day and night to raise the probability.

In the English Reading Week, one of my classmates recommends a quote to us, that goes like this: “Your future depends on many things, but mostly on you.” I can’t agree more this view. It’s truly that our future is determined by many things, such as opportunities and help from others, but our own attitude, determination, and hard work play a more important role. In other words, you are the master of our own future.
Take Abraham Lincoln for an example. He was born in a poor family, but only received a limited education in his childhood. Yet through his painstaking efforts, he changed not only his own fate but also the history of America. Even today, Lincoln is regarding as one of the most inspired figures in the world. Moreover, I firmly believe that our future is in our own hands.

C 5. A 6. B 7. C
根据第一段中“But there is one thing that does set me off: cats. Frankly, I can’t stand them. With their messy hair, beady little eyes, and pointy teeth, they just set my curly coat on end.(但有一样东西确实set me off:猫。 由此推知,猫让作者恼火,set me off意为“让我恼火”,与To make me annoyed意思一致。
根据第二段中“I’m particularly not fond of the cat — the gray-colored creature across the street.(我特别不喜欢那只猫——街对面那只灰色的动物)”和第三段的“Ms. Gray Puss, on the other hand, wanders collarless across the street any time she likes. She even does her business anywhere and anytime she prefers, including on my owners’ lawn.(另一方面,Gray Puss女士喜欢在街对面不戴项圈漫步。 故选A项。
根据第二段中“If she would just stay in her house or even her yard, it wouldn’t be so bad. But, unlike me, she gets to go wherever she wants. No collar, no leash, and no boundaries from what I can see.(如果她只是呆在她的房子里,甚至是她的院子里,事情就不会那么糟糕了。
根据最后一段“Mark my words: Someday, one of my owners will forget to lock the front gate, one of the fence boards will fall off, or my male owner Dave will forget to fully secure the leash. And when that day comes, someone’s going to suffer. I’m not sure why, but Dave keeps saying he thinks it will be me.(记住我的话:总有一天,我的一个主人会忘记锁前门,一块栅栏板会掉下来,或者我的男主人Dave会忘记把皮带系牢。

C 9. D 10. B 11. D
根据倒数第三段中“The tool is only for parents of kids under 18.
根据第四段中“Similarly, parents cannot see the content that their teen is sending or receiving on Snapchat. They can only view whom their child has communicated with in the past seven days. Snapchat is popular with young people, partially because messages on the platform disappear within 24 hours.
根据第四段中“Snapchat is popular with young people, partially because messages on the platform disappear within 24 hours.
根据第一段“Snapchat is rolling out parental controls that allow parents to see their teenager’s contacts and report to the social media company — without their child’s knowledge — any accounts that may worry them.

13. What does the underlined phrase “fare poorly” mean in paragraph 2
A. Charge little. B. Behave well.
C. Make mistakes. D. Earn little.
14. What is the exact probability that no one of the 23 students has the same birthday
A. 50%. B. 50.73%. C. 49.27%. D. 99%.
15. How can you earn $10.7 million in a month according to Frost
A. By multiplying the salary of the previous day by the salary of the next day.
B. By daydreaming of becoming a millionaire.
C. By making your salary of the next day twice that of the previous day.
D. By working hard day and night to raise the probability.
C 13. C 14. C 15. C
根据第一段“Here’s a fun brain teaser: How large does a random group of people have to be for there to be a 50% chance that at least two of the people will share a birthday The answer is 23, which surprises many people. How is this possible
根据前文“When thinking about this question, known as the “birthday problem” or the “birthday paradox” in statistics, many people intuitively (直觉地) guess 183, since that is half of all possible birthdays, given how there are generally 365 days in a year.
根据倒数第二段中“With 23 people, there is a 50.73% chance, Frost noted.
根据最后一段““In exchange for some service, suppose you’re offered to be paid 1 cent on the first day, 2 cents on the second day, 4 cents on the third, 8 cents, 16 cents, and so on, for 30 days,” Frost said. “Is that a good deal Most people think it’s a bad deal, but thanks to exponential growth, you’ll have a total of $10.7 million on the 30th day.”

分析设空,位于首段段尾,是对前文的总结并引出下文,根据前文“The most popular sport in the world is a hotly debated topic. There are many different opinions on what the most popular sport might be and why it is so popular.
根据前文“Soccer is likely to be the most popular sports in the world, with over 3.5 billion fans around the globe. Known as football in many parts of the world, 在世界许多地方被称为足球)”空前是逗号,所以空处句子首字母无需大写,是在介绍足球,所以G项“this exciting sport has gained a huge following due to its thrilling gameplay and fast-paced action.
分析设空,位于段首,是本段的中心句,根据后文“They called it Tchatali and played with a rock for a ball. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries BCE, the first ball game, called Cuju, took place in China. They played with a leather ball filled with feathers. In ancient Greece and Rome, ball games were also played, however, not at the Panhellenic Games or in amphitheaters. 在古希腊和罗马,球类运动也被进行,然而,不是在泛希腊运动会或圆形剧场)”可知,是在讲述足球的起源历史,所以A项“Soccer originated over 3000 years ago when it was first played by the Aztecs. 故选A项。
根据前文“Over time, it evolved into its current form and became popular all over Europe before spreading to other parts of the world. (随着时间的推移,它演变成现在的形式,并在传播到世界其他地区之前在整个欧洲流行起来)”以及后文“So why is soccer so popular (那么为什么足球如此受欢迎呢 )”可知,空处应是对前文的进一步说明,后文通过提问转折了话题,所以C项“Today, millions of people enjoy watching soccer games and playing them on a regular basis.
根据前文“There are many factors that contribute to its continued success, including its speed and unpredictable outcomes. (有许多因素促成了它的持续成功,包括它的速度和不可预测的结果)”以及后文“In addition, soccer is also a very social sport, with spectators gathering together in stadiums and bars to cheer on their favorite teams. (此外,足球也是一项非常社交的运动,观众聚集在体育场和酒吧为他们喜欢的球队加油)”可知,此处是在讲述了足球受欢迎的原因,所以B项“This leads to exciting and tense games that keep fans on the edge of their seats.

分析句子可知,which引导定语从句,指代先行词Treading on Thin Ice (Bu Bu Jing Xin),从句中作主语,air作从句谓语,与先行词保持人称和数的一直,先行词是单数,故air用单数,且air与Treading on Thin Ice (Bu Bu Jing Xin)是被动关系,用被动语态,由时间状语in 2011可知用一般过去时,故填was aired/aired。

1. recommends→recommended
2. that→which
3. 在agree more后加with
4. truly→true
5. you→we
7. but→and
8. regarding→regarded
9. inspired→inspiring
10. Moreover→Therefore
In the English Reading Week,可知,本句应该用一般过去时。
故将that改为which。
分析句子结构可知,此处考查固定搭配:can’t agree more with意为“非常赞同”。故在agree more后加with。
故将you改为we。
分析句子结构可知,“was born in a poor family”和“only received a limited education in his childhood”两者是并列关系,而非转折关系,应该用and连接。故将but改为and。
分析句子结构可知,“I firmly believe that our future is in our own hands.
