For me, nothing is more satisfying than discovering hidden gems (珍宝) in secondhand shops and estate sales. After all, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.
Two years ago, I came across a collection of loose, dusty photos. I thought: if these were mine, or my family’s, I’d want someone to return them to me. So I made it my goal to do so for others.
I’ve since visited estate sales and secondhand shops weekly, and have accumulated more than 50,000 of these items. I organize them in big boxes all over my house in New York. Photographs, home movies, undeveloped films, photo albums --- you name it, I’ve collected it.
I’ve also set up a social media account to help reunite items with their owners or other family members. The quickest we’ve been able to find an owner is within two minutes. Someone commented below a photo I posted; "I think that’s my child’s preschool teacher." The longest we’ve taken to find someone is four months, but I’m proud that we still managed to do it. There are thousands of photos that have yet to be reunited. Without social media, this project would not be possible.
People are often quite emotional when we get in touch --- most of these items are lost after a house move or a family death. Sometimes people donate a camera to a charity shop and forget to take the memory card out.
I’d love to create a building to hold all these memories. I want every photo and video to be digitized so they can be preserved online. I’m bringing together a team to return the photos to their owners. People get hooked on the feel-good stories that come out of this and I do, too.
24. What inspired the author to start collecting old photos and videos
A. His interest in secondhand objects. B. Advice from his family.
C. Some photos he discovered. D. The business opportunity he saw.
25. What do we know about the author’s social media account
A. He sets it up to collect more items. B. He posts his own photos and films.
C. It is for people to share their stories. D. It helps find the owners of the collected items.
26. How do people feel when the author contacts them
A. Touched. B. Relaxed. C. Hopeful. D. Calm.
27. What does the author plan to do
A. Work together with secondhand shops. B. Create a digital copy of the photos.
C. Collect more stories behind the photos. D. Set up an official website for his project.

New research has found caring for grandchildren can make a difference to seniors. Publishing their findings in the journal Aging & Mental Health, a team of experts from Germany and the U.K. reviewed data from 28 studies which included 191, 652 adults from 21 countries.
People aged 60 or above who cared for their grandchildren for an average of 12 hours a week were 60% less likely to experience loneliness than non-caregivers, one of the reviewed studies found, Five other studies, out of a total of seven, also produced data showing a negative connection between loneliness and care-giving for grandchildren. What’s more, five out of six reviewed studies found seniors who volunteered in their communities felt less lonely than those who didn’t.
"This is the first review of its kind to look into the relationship between care-giving, volunteering, and loneliness in old people," co-author Dr. Matthew Prina said. "Further research could help find the best dose (剂量) of caring for grandchildren. But valuing their unpaid activities will likely play an important role in their well-being. We also looked at studies that focused on care-giving for partners with serious health conditions. In those cases, seniors reported having higher levels of loneliness. This kind of care-giving may bed a lonely experience when there is lack of support from others."
Experts further explained that when caring for children, older adults tend to be more drawn into society, through things like school, play dates and other social events. For example, seniors can actively join in different activities and continuously learn things from a younger generation.
While not everyone has young children in their life, volunteering opportunities also work. Now one group called Eldera is bringing the two concepts together. It focuses on connecting generations by pairing experienced adults aged 60 or above with children across the world. The wisdom of the elders, with years of experience, knowledge and common sense, is the most valuable resource for the younger generation. It can help them imagine a better future.
28. What did the new research find out about the elderly
A. 60% seniors are less likely to suffer loneliness. B. Many of them are willing to be volunteers.
C. Their mental health is related to their personality. D. Caregiving and volunteering can reduce loneliness.
29. What can we infer from Dr. Matthew’s words in Paragraph 3
A. The needs of the elderly are always placed second.
B. The elderly hardly get support from their family members.
C. Respecting the old’s contributions is beneficial to their health.
D. It is a tough job for the elderly to care for their grandchildren.
30. What effect does caring for grandchildren mainly have on the elderly
A. It inspires them to understand the society. B. It helps them get more social opportunities.
C. It enables them to improve common sense. D. It enhances their working ability.
31. What is the benefit of creating Eldera
A. Providing volunteer opportunities for the young. B. Calling on people to care more about the elderly.
C. Spreading the wisdom of the old to the young. D. Teaching old people skills of caring for children.
D
Spider webs are made from silk. And silk is made from something scientists call "proteins". Proteins are special chemicals made by a living thing like an animal or a plant. You have lots of them in your body. Your hair and your nails are made of proteins (they are both made by a protein called "keratin"). Insects and spiders make silk in a special part of their bodies called a gland (腺), and use their legs to pull it out of their bodies. This is called spinning. Most species of spider have more than one kind of silk gland. Each one has different strength and stretchiness and is used for a specific purpose such as web frame, or covering eggs. The strength and stretchiness of silk depends on the way the spider’s body arranges the silk proteins.
We don’t usually notice just how strong they can be because they are amazingly thin. But the strongest silk, such as silk from a golden orb spider, is actually stronger than steel. Even more amazing, it is about 50 times as light. Actually, spider silk is a bit like a cross between steel and rubber. Even with the help of complicated machines and chemicals, humans still don’t know how to make a material this strong, stretchy, and light. Spiders are still the champions at this.
In fact, silk-making animals include crickets, glow-worms, ants, bees, etc. Some of these make silk to protect themselves. Crickets, for example, use silk to sew leaves together to build a nest. Some use silk for hunting, such as spiders and even glow-worms, which use sticky silk to capture flying animals they’d like to eat.
Studies about spider webs could pave the way for creating new materials that could be used in medicine and engineering. But synthetic (人工合成的) spider silk has been difficult to create. In the meantime, researchers hope their work will help us unreel one of the toughest materials of the natural world.
32. What can we learn from paragraph 1
A. Insects and spiders’ legs can make silk. B. Spider webs are made of keratin.
C. All species of spiders have a variety of silk glands. D. Arrangements of proteins determine silk features.
33. Why is steel mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To stress the strength of spider silk. B. To describe the advantages of spiders.
C. To compare the two materials. D. To highlight spiders’ advantages over people.
34. Which of the following can replace the underlined word in paragraph 4
A. Remove. B. Explore. C. Test. D. Replace.
35. What is the writing purpose of the passage
A. To raise awareness of the research on insects. B. To explain the knowledge about spider silk.
C. To encourage us to focus more on the spiders. D. To present the application of spider silk.
第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)

The fear of making the wrong decision, or decidophobia (选择恐惧症), can influence people even when it comes to the smallest choices, such as what to have for lunch. 36 Below are several tips to overcome it and help you progress in life.
Try the Decision-Making Quadrant (象限)
A good tool for decision-making is the Decision-Making Quadrant. In relation to the decision to be made, list answers to these four questions: What happens if X happens What won’t happen if X happens What happens if X doesn’t happen What won’t happen if X doesn’t happen 37
Reduce the number of decisions
If making decisions is a weakness, it’s important to admit that and reduce decision-making in as many areas as possible. Eat set meals. Wear standard outfits. 38 Do everything else you can to reduce decisions. Then, consider practicing making decisions with someone who is more decisive.
Take it one step at a time
Change can be hard. Not everyone likes to be different from routine by making decisions, big or small. When making a decision, look at it as a learning experience. 39 Don’t be afraid of the result. Look forward to it.
See things from a different perspective
When decision paralysis (决策瘫痪) has taken over and"what ifs"are holding you down, sometimes you need to step outside of yourself for a different perspective. 40 Ask yourself, "What would he or she do " and let it be your guide.
A. Think about someone you trust and respect.
B. Develop a morning, work, and evening routine.
C. Create an action list with decision deadlines and stick to it.
D. Your decision will almost always be found in your answers.
E. Every choice you make teaches you something.
F. It can keep you stuck in place when you should be moving forward.
G. If decision-making is difficult for you, first take a look at potential choices and results.

After dinner, Mrs Quimby told the family that Grandma had sent in a lot of pumpkins for jack-o’-lanterns (空心南瓜灯) for the neighborhood children. There was one in the basement waiting to be carved, she added. Hearing that, Eva sprang to her feet and rushed down to bring it up.
"Let’s make it smile like last year," exclaimed Eva.
"Hmm. Let’s see." Mr Quimby studied the pumpkin, turning it to find the best side for the face. With a pencil, he drew a nose-shaped nose. Then the mouth turned up on both sides. "Smiling!" Eva clapped her hands.
Mr Quimby nodded with a smile, cut a circle around the top of the pumpkin and lifted it off for a lid. Without being asked, Eva found a big spoon for scooping (用勺挖) out the seeds. Picky-picky, the Quimbys’ old cat, came into the kitchen to see if something had been put in his dish. When he found that there wasn’t any, he smelled the pumpkin and walked out angrily.
Mr Quimby began to whistle as he carved with skill and care, first a mouthful of teeth, each one neat and square, then eyes and eyebrows. He was working on two ears shaped like question marks when Mrs Quimby announced it was bedtime for Eva. Unwillingly, Eva ran, took a shower and quickly returned. Mr Quimby had just carved a few C-shaped hairs around the hole in the top of the pumpkin. He reached inside and dug a candle holder in the bottom.
"There," he said, putting down his knife. "A work of art." Mrs Quimby found a short candle, put it in the pumpkin, lit it and set the lid in place. Eva turned off the light. The jack-o’-lantern was smiling and shining softly. "Wow!" Eva threw her arms around her father before going to bed with great satisfaction.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
In the middle of the night Eva awoke to a noise. On the table their jack-o’-lantern no longer had a whole face.

One possible version:
In the middle of the night Eva awoke to a noise. Nervous, she listened hard. There it was again, a sudden crash. And then just. silence. Then again in the kitchen, something was moving. The darkness and the noise made Eva too scared to move. She sat up in bed, screaming, "Daddy!" Within seconds, Mr Quimby rushed in, asking what was the matter. Pointing to the kitchen, Eva told her father something was moving there. Mr Quimby smiled and comforted her calmly. Then they went to have a look together.
On the table their jack-o’-lantern no longer had a whole face. Part of its forehead and one eye were gone. Picky-picky was sitting under the kitchen table. "Bad cat! Bad cat!" shouted Eva, angrily stamping her bare foot on the floor. The old cat ran out of the kitchen. Mr Quimby laughed gently, "Maybe he is starving." He put his arms around Eva, who burst into tears, and said, "Don’t worry. We can get another pumpkin and make another cool jack-o’-lantern."

Our school has changed a lot, so in the morning, please feel free to tour around the school. Then, we would like you to discuss your lives with our current students who are about to graduate this July. You can talk about what you did after high school, whether you went on to further education, and what jobs you have now. So, if you’ re interested in sharing your experience with them, please join the lectures in the afternoon. In the evening, we will have a dance party with lots of food and drinks. This year, we will also have music provided by the band Saturn. Two of the band’s founding members, Aaron Green and Max White, graduated from our school! So if you are a fan of their music, bring a notebook-for them to sign. Our anniversary ceremony will be held on the 15th of June, so please let us know if you are attending by the 31st of May.
