After a homeless man offered a college student in England all the money he had so she’d
be able to get home safely, the woman is paying it forward—in a massive way.
The story began in early December. It was about 3 a.m. and Harrison-Bentzen was panic.
“I came out after a student night out and realized I didn’t have any battery on my phone. I’d lost my friends,” the 22-year-old told BBC Radio 5. She’d also lost her bank card, she discovered, and she had no money.
Just then, a homeless man, known only as Robbie, approached the young woman and
asked her if she needed help. He reached into his pocket and pulled out all the money he
had—loose change amounting to about $4.60. He insisted that Harrison-Bentzen take it to pay for a taxi so she’d get home safely.
Harrison-Bentzen, a student at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, England,
says she refused to take Robbie’s money and found another way to get home. But following her
encounter with the generous man, she says she couldn’t get him out of her mind.
For the next few days, the student searched for Robbie, driving around the streets with her mom and using social media in an attempt to find the man. In that time, Harrison-Bentzen says she learned more about Robbie and discovered that he actually had a reputation for helping strangers.
Finally, after four days of driving around Preston, Harrison-Bentzen found Robbie. She
was determined to do something to help change Robbie’s life.
So, earlier this month, the student launched a fundraising campaign in Robbie’s name. She explained that she would be spending 24 hours on the streets, so as to “understand the difficulties” that the homeless face on a daily basis.
Harrison-Bentzen says she had initially hoped to raise about $780 with her
campaign. Her expectations, however, were quickly blown out of the water. As of Thursday morning, 4,800 people have donated almost $50,000.
What happened to Harrison-Bentzen in early December
She was robbed by a bad guy.
She lost her phone
She met with a kind homeless man.
She was injured in a traffic accident
Which of the following words can best describe Robbie
A. Strange. B. Warm-hearted. C. Clever. D. Hard-working.
Why would Harrison-Bentzen be spending 24 hours on the streets
To experience the homeless people’s life.
To raise more money for the homeless.
To save the homeless from the difficult life.
To make her campaign more famous.
What can we learn from the text
Harrison-Bentzen accepted Robbie’s help at last.
With Robbie’s help, Harrison-Bentzen took a taxi to go home safely.
Harrison-Bentzen and her friends spent four days finding Robbie to thank him.
Harrison-Bentzen was a college student when the story was happening. C
Scientists have discovered that chimps talk to each other by drumming on trees
with their hands and feet. It is a way of sending long-distance messages. Each male chimp has its own way of drum beats, to which they add spoken noises to show who is where and what they are doing. The chimps only seem to use their own beats when they are travelling. It may explain why chimps don’t say goodbye to each other because they can keep in touch with each other when they’re away.
We believe chimps like communicating with each other very much. So do the chimps in
the zoo. They are happy to communicate with visitors every day. However, during the
lockdown time, the chimps are upset because of no visitors coming.
A new study has found that some chimps were quieter and lazier than usual during the
lockdown months. The study took place in Knowsley Safari Park in England. It
compared the chimps’ behavior during periods of lockdown in 2020 and 2021—when the zoo was closed and they were not being observed by humans—with how they acted after zoo visitors returned.
When the zoo was closed, some chimps spent more time alone and moved about less.
When the sites reopened and visitors returned, they spent less time resting and ate more and explored more. In Knowsley, they were eager to get close to visitors’ cars more often.
The researchers say that they can’t tell for sure whether the lockdown was good or bad for
the chimps they had studied. When visitors returned, chimps spent less time alone, which could be seen as positive. However, their less resting could also be seen as negative, because it could mean that human visitors interrupted their rest time, which may harm chimps’ health.
What is the purpose of the chimps’ way of drum beats
A. To have communication. B. To scare visitors.
C. To attract scientists. D. To play music.
What effects did the lockdown have on chimps according to the study
The chimps put on more weight.
The chimps became less active.
The chimps enjoyed their loneliness.
The chimps communicated quite often.
How were the chimps when the Zoo was reopened
A. Lazy. B. Quiet. C. Lonely. D. Excited.
In which way did the researchers get the study result
A. By listing numbers. B. By interviewing visitors.
C. By giving examples. D. By comparing facts.

If you bought some candy months ago but never ate it, how can you tell whether it is still
safe to eat The easiest way is to check the “use-by date” printed on the wrapper. If that date has already passed, you’re likely to throw the candy away.
But is that really necessary According to a new report from the US Natural Resources
Defense Council NRDC , tons of food is wasted each year, largely because people don’t fully
understand what expiration dates, or “use-by dates”, actually mean.
Food dating was introduced in the 1970s because consumers wanted more information about the things that they were eating. When use-by dates first showed up, they were only used to show freshness because producers wanted their products to be tasted in their best conditions.
But the truth is that these dates aren’t related to the risk of food poisoning or food-borne
illness, according to Time News. However, most customers misinterpreted use-by dates and related them to the safety of the food, and they still largely do now. Eggs, for example, can still be eaten three to five weeks after purchase even though the use-by date is much earlier. When their use-by dates pass, strawberry flavored drinks may lose their red color and biscuits may
lose their crunch , but they are not harmful.
“It’s a confusing subject, the difference between food quality and food safety,” said Jena Roberts, vice president of National Food Lab, a US food testing company. “Even in the food industry I have colleagues who get confused.”
This is why scientists are calling for a standard explanation to be printed following the
use-by dates.“We want this to be clearly communicated so consumers are not misunderstanding the data and contributing to a lot of waste,” said Dana Gunders, a staff scientist with the NRDC .
But this won’t be a mistake that is easy to correct since people have believed it for so long.
Another problem is that the quality levels of different foods change differently—some are still safe to eat long after their use-by date while others are not.
As a result, food industry officials are now thinking of changing the use-by date to a date
indicating when food is most likely to go bad.
The use-by dates were first used to.
show the safety of food
show the freshness of food.
give a warning of food poisoning
indicate the relation between food and illness
The underlined word “misinterpreted" in Paragraph 4 probably
A. formed a wrong idea about B. made guesses about
C. made wrong use of D. took no notice
Which of the following is TRUE
Most customers understand what use-by dates mean.
“Use-by dates” have existed for more than 60 years.
Even after their use-by dates pass, some foods are still safe to eat.
Biscuits can’t be eaten when not as crunchy as they are bought.
Scientists are calling for a standard explanation to be printed together with the use-by dates because
most consumers often misunderstand use-by dates
use-by dates are not helpful or reliable
more consumers get worried about food safety
the quality level of different foods changes differently

What is happiness Maybe you often forget it.Here are some happiness habits you always forget.
You forget to breathe consciously .Most yoga courses today talk about
meditation . 36 Go out and find a natural spot.Inhale deeply, and then
exhale.Repeat this 10 times and watch how you lighten up your mood.It can help people feel calm.
You forget to smile at people around you.Smiling is not just a happiness supporter for you
but for others. In fact, the more you smile at people, the more they are eager to help you.
37 And it brings so much positive energy that you’ll need to make great friends.
You forget to say thank you. 38 It is also about your overall feelings and imagination:
of being thankful for little things that you receive.Feel good, be thankful and you’ll be always happy. So don’t forget to express your thanks to others.
You forget to taste your experiences.Do you always hurry with what you are doing
Or do you always think that there’s not enough for you to enjoy Take some time
to enjoy the taste of the food you are eating, or the comfort of the chair you are sitting on.
40 You surf the Internet, watch TV, and go to work. You are so caught up with all
these things that you have forgotten to spend some quiet time.Take a moment to sit down, and do nothing — feeling the silence and being happy.
That’s because smiling breaks the ice between strangers.
Do you always feel that you’rerunning out of time or money
And they all share the same basic instruction: breathe
Have you ever paid more attention to your study
You forget to stretch ( ) like a cat.
You forget to stay quiet for a while.
Saying thank you is not just about appreciating someone who did you a favor.

My Best Teaching Experience
Tyler was only in my senior class for a semester. He had been suspended many
times in previous years because of his anger issues. When he entered my class, I thought the worst.
Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked to the class, I would ask students questions,
calling them by name. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would respond with a joke. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.
About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get
students involved in class discussions or at least have them sit quietly and attentively .
By contrast, Tyler was often loud and sometimes rude.
He had been in so much trouble over the years. He expected his teachers to know about
his past: about how many times he had been sent to the office or suspended from school. I had
found that these sorts of referrals were not very effective and that students would return
from the office behaving worse than before.
One day, Tyler was talking over me while I was teaching. I stopped my lesson and said, “Tyler, why don ’t you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own ” With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can ’t remember what he said other than that he included some impolite words. I sent Tyler straight to the office, and he received a week ’s suspension.
To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler ’s anger was almost
too much for me. The week Tyler was suspended from school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as a class. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return.

参考范文
On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door waiting for him. At last he came, walking
with his hands in his pockets. That image immediately brought back memories of the boy
throwing a tantrum in class the other day. Yet I managed to restrain my anger this time. These past
few days, I had been building a wall between us with blame and punishment, so I thought to
myself that maybe I should try another way. “I want to apologize for the quarrel that we had in the
middle of class, and I’m really sorry if it hurt your feelings,” I said, finally breaking the ice.
A look of surprise flashed across his face. The naughty boy froze there, staring at me with
wide eyes. It was clear that he had never heard an apology from a teacher before. “It is I who
should say sorry,” he murmured, his face burning with shame. “I should have learned to control
myself.” With a smile, I stepped forward and patted him on his shoulder, signaling to him to go
back to his seat. In the days that followed, Tyler didn’t misbehave in class anymore and took an
active part in class discussions. I had never expected “understanding” could make such a huge
difference — it turned one of my worst teaching experiences into perhaps the best one.

M: I’m afraid I can’t. I have to take this report to Mr.Smith at the home office before his meeting
at 10 am, so I was thinking about going to the airport straight from there. If you’d like, I could
meet you at the airport.
W: In that case, how about meeting at 12:00 to have lunch together before our flight

M: No. I moved out during my second year of college, and my sister left right after she graduated
from high school.

M:It’s my pleasure.
W:When did you start to volunteer
M:When I retired in 2014, I found myself with more time to spare and I was looking for things to
do. So I began volunteering the next year.
W:There are many ways we can occupy ourselves as we get older. We can start new hobbies; we

M:You know there’s always someone out there that needs your help and seniors have valuable
experience and knowledge that can be put to good use.

M:Absolutely. There were a large number of senior volunteers in the United States last year alone.
W:What volunteer activities do you participate in
M:I used to offer food to the homeless at the Food Bank. But now I’m doing teaching in local
schools.
W:What do you get from volunteering

and it has spread to the surrounding apartment buildings. As we speak, fire fighters and the police
are helping those who could not make it outside without assistance. Though many seem to be safe,
there is not much relief left to the people of Battery Park. According to the fire department, the fire
began early last night after the bakery closed. There seems to be a problem with the water system
in the area and it is stopping the fire prevention system from turning on. Many have come from
local areas with food and water to help. As far as we know, no one has been injured yet by the fire
because most people have known to leave the building hours ago, but as these lucky people stand
outside of their burning homes, they do not feel calm. This will be an August that the people of
Battery Park will not forget any time. Now back to you in the studio.
