On the way home from his job at a cake shop on one August evening, Craig Schum
stopped his car at the East Hampton Airport for a break. He got out of the car and kicked off his shoes to relax.
Within seconds, though, Schum saw something shocking : A small plane dived and
crashed into the woods at about 100 yards from the run-way. “I don’t remember making the decision that I should go help out,” he says. “I just started running.” Schum rushed across the
street barefoot before taking off his apron ( ). Then he climbed over a six-foot-high fence
and ran toward the woods.
When he got there, he discovered the pilot, Stephen Bochter his head was covered in
blood beside the burning plane. Brochter’s only passenger, his wife, Kim Brillo, was on the ground, unable to move. “She had blood all over her,” says Schum. “I thought she was dead.”
Without a second thought, Schum struggled to lift the fence and brought Brochter and
Brillo out from under it. There was only one thought in Schum’s mind that he must bring the
12
couple to safety as quickly as possible. Moments later, the entire plane exploded ( ). After
the ambulance arrived, Bochter and Brillo were taken to a nearby hospital and treated for injuries.
Brochter, an experienced pilot, later said that the plane’s electrical system had failed
shortly after take-off. He had been trying to land at the East Hampton Airport when the plane began to fall. He managed to level the wings before crashing into the woods. “Everything was on fire, and Schum came out of nowhere to save us,” says Bochter. “We are extremely lucky to have lived through it because of him.”
What did Schum do upon seeing the plane crash
A. He called the police at once. B. He decided to pull over.

The early life of the green sea turtle is full of danger. Only one in 1,000 baby sea
turtles survive to adulthood. From its home in the sand it breaks its egg with an egg tooth. Its mother is not there to help it. Instead it is greeted by crabs, coyotes, and dogs waiting to eat it for dinner. To survive, the baby turtle must hide in the sand until night. There, it moves slowly to the sea.
The small turtle must swim hard to reach the ocean waters. In the sea, it tries hard to find
food. It must also keep itself from being food for fish.
As dangerous as the sea turtle’s life is in the natural world, its most dangerous enemies are humans. The rubbish left by humans in the ocean causes problems for the small green sea turtle.
12
A little turtle might eat a piece of plastic in the sea. It might also eat oil on the ocean’s surface. Young turtles also get caught in fishing nets. There are laws against hunting sea turtles. Still,
many are hunted, both for their meat and for their shells . All of these dangers must be
prevented.
Sea turtles that do survive to grow into adulthood go through many changes For example, adult green sea turtles weigh about 500 pounds. They stop eating jellyfish and other meat and eat only plants. And they may plan a trip to go back home again. A mother sea turtle goes back to the beach where she was born. This is the only place where she will lay eggs. Even if it has been forty years since she was a baby, she always knows her way back home.
Why do baby turtles move to the sea at night
A. They dislike sunshine. B. They need to avoid enemies.
C. They can find food easily then. D. They prefer lower temperatures.
What does the author think of the young turtles in Paragraph 3
A. Interesting. B. Careless. C. Poor. D. Puzzled.
What can we learn about sea turtles
They mainly feed on fish and meat.
They can live for around forty years.
They visit their beach homes several times a year.
Mother turtles always produce eggs at their birth places.
What is the text mainly talking about
The homes of green sea turtles.
How sea turtles find their food.
The danger faced by sea turtles.
How young turtles became adults.

A friend sent me an email, asking if I’d consider writing about educational apps for children to watch while on road trips. The email said, “Many are turning to road trips. And often with long car rides comes the use of on-screen entertainment. These educational apps should also develop their art, math and design skills.”
While I realize the intention is well-meaning, and doubtless would lead to a quieter
12
car ride for the parents, the thought of sticking kids in front of screens on a road trip makes me queasy. You see, if they’re glued to a screen for hours on end, they will miss everything that's going by outside the window. And that means they’ll miss out a major part of the trip and the opportunity to engage in conversation with family members, but to be alone with their own thoughts, or simply to be bored.
There is so much to see on a road trip! Cars, trees, faces, building, markets, airplanes
landing-the entire world is out there, and staring at it from the backseat of a car familiarizes a child with what is going on.
I have a theory that paying attention to one’s surroundings while traveling by car
helps children develop an internal compass. If they don’t pay attention during all those years when they’re being driven, they’ll struggle to know where to go and how to locate
themselves once they’re independent. This doesn’t mean they have to be alert ( ) for
the entire journey, but not being on a screen naturally allows for a higher level of engagement with one’s surroundings. When you listen to music, you’ll look up occasionally; you’ll pay attention to landmarks.
What can children do on the trip Actually, there are plenty of off-screen activities.
What was the author’s friend’s intention to develop apps
A. To play games. B. To make some extra money.
C. To entertain and educate children. D. To improve the relationship in the family.
Which can best replace the underlined word “queasy ” in paragraph 2
A. uncomfortable. B. tired. C. unsafe. D. lonely.
What is the author’ s opinion on focusing on the surroundings when traveling
It can raise children’s environmental awareness.
It can help children develop a sense of direction.
It can give children the courage to learn to drive.
It can enable children to become more independent.
What can be the best title for the text
Take the Chance of Traveling to Relax Yourself.
Say Goodbye to Educational Apps on Your Holiday
Learn to Look up from Your Screens from Time to Time
Leave the Screens Alone on Your Next Family Road Trip

How to Be a Good Tourist
We travel not only for work but also for fun and learning. New restaurants, galleries, temples and new architecture... These places are homes for people like us who live and work
there. How would you want visitors to behave in your own home Think about it. 36
There are many ways of doing this without sacrificing our own holiday.
Do your homework. 37 Guides will help you when you get to the site, but is that the
best place to go Is it popular only because the one-day tourist can see it easily or because it is really a worthwhile place to visit You’d better check it out.
38 Don’t go to your hotels for meals. Walk around, even if in the streets closest to
your hotel. Eat in local restaurants. Talk to the locals. Learn a few in the local language and use them. You will surely get a smile from the hotel staff and street sellers.
Help preserve the sites. Most of the sites you visit may be visited by millions of people a
year, so care needs to be taken to allow others to enjoy them as well. Some of these monuments
are so old and fragile that they are sensitive to the touch of hands or bags and shows. 39
This way, you don’t encourage the use of those plastic bags that fly all over many sites.
And here’s the big one—good manners are nearly universal. 40 If that doesn’t sound
like you then give the world a break and stay home.
Experience the place.
Always have a cloth bag with you.
Read up on the places you want to visit.
Try to buy something from the local stores.
A good tourist is polite, positive and eco-sensitive.
We’ve cleaned up after ourselves and taken only good memories.
If we are good tourists, wherever we go, we try to make it a little better because of our visit.

Once upon a time, a very strong woodcutter 41 for a job in a wood merchant and
he got it. The pay was really good and so was the 42 condition. For those reasons the

where he was supposed to work.
The first day the woodcutter brought 18 trees, which he all had 44 himself.
“Congratulations!” the boss said, “Go on that way!” Deeply 45 by the boss’s words, the

“When was the last time you 49 your axe ” the boss asked. “I had no time to do
that, because I have been very busy trying to cut trees.” answered the woodcutter.
Our 50 are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we don’t 51 time to
sharpen the “axe” in life. It seems that everyone is busier than ever, but less 52 than ever.

“Mom, what’s this ” my little daughter in the living room called and pointed to an
instrument box. “Oh, it’s my flute( ),” I said and opened it. There was the old silver flute
that I played years ago. “Play it, Mom.” my daughter asked excitedly.
“Oh, I don’t know whether I’ve forgotten how to play it,” I said. Then, I was lost in thought. The flute carried me back to the days when I was thirteen. That year, because of my dad’s new job, in the middle term, I moved to a new school and left my old friends. Besides, I was a socially awkward girl. So in the new school, I became very lonely and bored.
Two weeks after I went there, the school band was wanting new members. I extremely
wished to join it. I loved music. Joining the band could help change my boring school life. And I could meet people with the same hobby, which would be much easier for me to make new friends. But to join the band, each member needed to buy an instrument and take lessons to learn it. My family was on a tight budget at that time. So I didn’t think my parents would support my wish. Besides, I didn’t want to put further financial pressure on my parents.
That day, I arrived home after school, tired and sad. It was another tough day. My dad was
reading the newspaper on the sofa “Hi,” he said. “Hi, Dad,” I answered softly. “What’s the matter ” he questioned, finding there was something wrong with me. “Nothing, Dad,” I replied. “Come over here,” he said, asking me to sit down beside him.
He looked at me as I sat down. Then, he talked with me, wishing to know what was
troubling me. Still, I didn’t want to tell him about my loneliness at my new school and my big wish to join the band. However, after he kept asking. I finally told him. Not wanting him to feel stressed, I added I could ultimately deal with my problem without joining the band.

第二节
参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
Just as I finished my words, my dad dropped the paper and stood up. He said, “We’ll support
you. Buying a flute is not a waste of money. It’s your chance to know your new school and friends
better.” I couldn’t believe my ears. But soon, we reached one store, where I was attracted by the
shiny instruments. I liked flutes most, so the manager opened a few different ones. “Which do you
prefer ” my dad asked. “That one,” I said, pointing to the one that was so shiny and perfect.
Hearing it, Dad immediately nodded and paid.
Paragraph 2:
Then, my dad and I walked out of the store, with me carrying the beautiful flute. My heart
was filled with joy, not only for the new flute but also because I felt my father’s love. Soon, my
boring life changed. I joined the school band and of course, I made new friends. “Please play it,
Mom.” my daughter asked again, which brought me back to the moment. “OK. I’ll try.” I replied,
running my hands over the flute slowly. Gladly, I didn’t forget how to play it. When the beautiful
music sounded, I thought, “Thank you, Dad, for there was more to be treasured in that flute than
met the eye.”

right now. The first issue goes to press tomorrow.
