I spent three weeks with her in Miami, thrilled to do anything from washing dishes to touring houses with her. Her love of poetry, music, and creative writing encouraged me. One day while hanging sheets on the clothesline, she looked up and said, “You know, the sky is fuel for the soul.” I have never looked at the clouds since without hearing those words. Two years later when I visited her house I had hoped to talk to her about school, but instead she was in a hospital bed in the guest room. She had cancer on the liver, and her family members were caring for her. I was in shock.
To this day, more than 50 years later, I still see her smile and think about the advice she gave me. Now and then I reread her letters, and I remember the importance of her smile and her friendship.

April Fools’ Day is supposed to be a day to play jokes on others in hopes of getting a good laugh and making one feel like a fool. However, the April Fools’ Day of 2022 was quite different for my mom and me.
That day my friend Jimmy and I were playing a game. I had dropped down from a bar (横木) many times in the past without ever having a problem, but that day the simple act of dropping to the ground became a nightmare (噩梦). I broke my arm.
Jimmy’s dad heard my crying and rushed out to see what was going on. When he saw the problem, he quickly put me into his truck and went inside to telephone my mom and let her know he would take me to the hospital. As that day was April Fools’ Day, Mom was not buying it and really thought it was a big joke. Mom was finally convinced by Jimmy’s mom. When she saw me, she broke down in tears because she felt so bad-she simply believed that it was just a big trick.
I guess one could compare this to the story The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Since I had played bad tricks before, it was no wonder that my mom didn’t believe it. I as well as my mom was made to look like a fool that day. We both learned a valuable lesson.

A. He had an accident. B. He was hurt by Jimmy.
C. He dreamed a terrible dream. D. He fooled his mom with his friend.
12. Why did Jimmy’s dad phone the writer’s mom
A. Because he wanted to play a joke on her.
B. Because he wanted to inform her of the accident.
C. Because he wanted to see how deeply she loved her son.
D. Because he wanted her to go to the hospital to pay the money.
13. What does the underlined sentence “Mom was not buying it” mean
A. She thought her son deserved it. B. She would not like to pay the money.
C. She had no preparation for the bad news. D. She didn’t believe what Jimmy’s dad said.
14. Why did the writer mention the story The Boy Who Cried Wolf
A. Because he was proud of his story.
B. Because he had a lesson like that.
C. Because he thought it was his mom’s fault.
D. Because he felt he was luckier than that boy.
15. From the passage we can infer that________.
A. the writer was a dishonest person B. the writer will lose interest in games
C. the writer won’t play jokes as before D. the writer’s mom didn’t care much about him

When he saw the problem he quickly put me into his truck and went inside to telephone my mom and let her know he would take me to the hospital.

A. She thought her son deserved it. B. She would not like to pay the money.
C. She had no preparation for the bad news. D. She didn’t believe what Jimmy’s dad said.

F. Just eat a meal and have a conversation together.
G. Here are some tips to help bring your family closer.
G 17. B 18. F 19. A 20. C
空格前的句子“Strong family bonds (纽带) can encourage better behaviors in children and teach them how to be a good friend.(牢固的家庭纽带可以鼓励孩子有更好的行为,并教会他们如何成为好朋友)”是说密切家庭关系的作用;而下文的内容是就如何拉近家人的距离提出的建议,所以空格处的句子应该是一个承上启下的句子,引出下文的建议,所以把G项“Here are some tips to help bring your family closer.(这里有一些小技巧可以帮助你拉近家人的距离)”填入空格处,符合题意。故选G项。
根据空格前的句子“Set aside time for family.(为家庭留出时间)”和空格后的句子“By keeping this day on a regular schedule, everyone will know that they need to keep that day clear for family time.(通过定期安排这一天,每个人都会知道他们需要留出一天的家庭时间)”可知,空格处的句子一定提到“定期安排一天”这一建议,所以把B项“Try to set aside a regular day every week.(试着每周留出固定的一天)”填入空格处,符合题意。
Choose a few nights during the week when you expect everyone to gather around the dinner table. Studies have shown that eating meals together has a positive effect on children’s physical and mental well-being.(一起吃饭。在一周中选择几个晚上,那时你希望每个人都聚集在餐桌旁。研究表明,一起吃饭对孩子的身心健康有积极的影响)”是建议和家人一起吃饭,并说明这样做的好处;而空格后的句子“Don’t allow phones. What’s the most important is that you come together and enjoy a meal free of distraction.(不允许使用手机。最重要的是你们聚在一起,专心享受一顿饭)”是建议不要使用手机,专心享受和家人一起吃饭的时间,所以空格处的句子也应该是谈论和家人一起吃饭的事,所以把F项“Just eat a meal and have a conversation together.(只是一起吃顿饭,聊聊天)”填入空格处,符合题意。故选F项。
【19题详解】
空格处的句子是该部分的主题句。空格后的句子“Make cleaning your home a responsibility for the whole family. Create a list of housework and have everyone sign up. Then set up a time during the week or on the weekend when everyone can do their housework together.(让打扫你的家成为全家人的责任。创建一份家务清单,让每个人都签字。然后在一周内或周末安排一个时间,让每个人都可以一起做家务)”是建议让每个人都参与做家务,所以空格处的句子一定是建议让家人一起做家务,所以把A项“Do housework as a family.(像一家人一样做家务)”填入空格处,符合题意。故选A项。
Feeling supported by your family is one of the most important things in building strong family bonds. Bonds like these will last your kids a lifetime. They will enjoy these strong bonds when they are your age and even after you are gone.(鼓励支持。
