Best Online Learning Platforms
Whether you’re aiming to learn some new skills or just want to explore a topic for fun, online learning platforms are a great and easily accessible resource for learning on your own schedule.
MasterClass
Although MasterClass offers more than just creative courses (课程), its well-chosen offerings are the ones that put A-list actors, writers, artists, musicians, and more in the teacher’s seat. Most courses have around 20 lessons, and these courses are video-based, with practical advice and demonstrations mixed with straightforward lectures, workbooks and class discussions. The price is about $15 per month for unlimited access, but students have to sign up for one year at a time.
EdX
Real college courses, created and taught by real college instructors, are available in a wide range of fields and topics. The biggest selling point for EdX is that the majority of their courses are free — but there’s a catch. If you’re just taking the class for your own learning experience, the free version will probably work, but if you want to have formal verification (证明) for professional reasons, the “verified certificate” option costs about $49 per class.
Udacity
The programs of the platform focus on web development, programming, cloud computing and data science. Each program includes hands-on practice, real-world applications and examples, individual code reviews, and real instructors and career coaches who can address your individual needs. It’s about $399 monthly, or roughly $597 for students who buy the full four months at once.
Pluralsight
Designed with working professionals in mind, Pluralsight offers courses in subjects like software development, data science, information security and more. Regardless of how many classes you want to take, the price is the same — about $29 per month for a personal plan (you can enjoy a 15% discount (折扣) for a complete year).
21. Which one would you choose if you’re interested in dancing and singing
A. EdX. B. Udacity.
C. Pluralsight. D. MasterClass.
22. Who is Udacity intended for
A. Writers. B. Fashion designers.
C. Computer programmers. D. Artists.
23. How much would you pay for your one-year learning on Pluralsight
A. About 268 dollars. B. About 296 dollars.
C. About 348 dollars. D. About 386 dollars.

Growing up on Long Island with a father who gave me dieting tips at 13, a mother who taught me to use makeup as I left for middle school, and peers (同龄人) who shared weight-loss tips on the bus, I developed an unusual self-image. By the time I became a teenager, I felt horror when I encountered photos of myself and saw a huge stomach in the mirror even though I was never overweight.
Throughout my early 20s, I’d wear lipstick and mascara (睫毛膏) and hold my mouth in a half-smile as I walked down the street in order to look more attractive to others. Following popular body-positive advice, I’d flip through Facebook photos of myself, trying to identify at least one desirable feature in each. I’d stare at my reflection, hoping to blink and see a different shape when I opened my eyes. Instead, I’d just fall further into the glass like Alice, deep in the darkest places of my imagination.
A year and a half ago, to escape this personal Wonderland, I decided not to put a mirror in my room when I moved into a new apartment. The small one above my bathroom sink would be enough. I was burnt out from attempts at body positivity. Rather than make peace with my reflection, photographs and scale, I’d avoid them altogether.
As I stopped trying to like my appearance, it no longer tortured (折磨) me. I stopped wearing makeup daily. Instead, I developed a sense of identity from my unfailing punctuality (准时性), my sharp analyses of movies, and my ability to pay rent in New York City as a freelance writer. I looked up to Amy Schumer and Lena Dunham instead of women who tried to diet, noticing that the most powerful women seemed undistracted by weight. Since I wasn’t always disappointing myself by trying to love my body and failing, I became happier.
24. Why did the author develop an unusual self-image when she was young
A. She hated to wear makeup.
B. She suffered from being overweight.
C. She was influenced by people around her.
D. She wanted to have a huge stomach.
25. What does the author mainly want to tell us in Paragraph 2
A. She was attracted by others’ photos on Facebook.
B. She paid too much attention to her appearance.
C. She felt ashamed of her appearance.
D. She was addicted to taking selfies.
26. What did the author take pride in later
A. Her good personal qualities.
B. Her newly published books.
C. Her new apartment in New York City.
D. Her relationship with powerful women.
27. What has the author learned from Amy Schumer and Lena Dunham
A. It’s important to eat healthily.
B. We should never disappoint ourselves.
C. It’s important to know others’ abilities.
D. We shouldn’t be distracted by our weight.

Sometimes, when we talk to our dogs, they tilt (倾斜) their heads adorably to one side. Although it might suggest disbelief or confusion, the gesture could actually be a sign of concentration, according to a new study.
Researchers investigated how well 40 dogs of various species could memorize the names of different toys and then recall that information in order to retrieve (找回) specific toys in response to their owners’ commands. Most of the dogs weren’t able to learn the toy names, but seven (one died during the study) border collies (边境牧羊犬) showed extraordinary ability to do the job.
The scientists regarded that group as “gifted word learners”, and found that the seven collies had something in common: they all tilted their heads far more frequently than other dogs after hearing a command. The data showed that the gifted learners tilted their heads 43 percent of the time, while the other 33 dogs did the gesture just 2 percent of the time. “It seems that there’s a relationship between the success in retrieving a specific toy and frequent head tilts upon hearing its name,” said Shany Dror, an animal researcher at E tv s Loránd University in Hungary.
The gifted dogs showed they could learn 12 new toy names in one week, and then remember those names for at least two months. And only the gifted dogs who performed well at the toy retrieval tests consistently tilted their heads after hearing a command. That led Dror’s team to conclude that the gesture is related to collies’ attempts to work out the meaning of a word.
Similar to the way humans are right- or left-handed, the gifted collies also tended to move their heads to just one side or the other. Their favored side stayed the same during the three experiments regardless of where the owners were standing. To the researchers, that consistency may be additional evidence that dogs tilt their heads when paying close attention to a test.
The so called “right-tilters” and “left-tilters” may be individual preference, which scientists want to investigate further.
28. What does dogs’ tilting their heads show according to the new study
A. Their trust in owners.
B. Their close attention.
C. Their natural curiosity.
D. Their painful feeling.
29. What can we learn about the gifted dogs
A. Their memory can last for long.
B. They are easily distracted by toys.
C. They would like to follow the others.
D. They show interest in humans’ gestures.
30. What will the research focus on in the future
A. Dogs’ attention to their owners.
B. Dogs’ relationship with humans.
C. Dogs’ ability to remember names.
D. Dogs’ preference for the tilting direction.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Why do dogs do the head tilts
B. Dogs can be gifted word learners
C. Dogs are born with a head-tilting tendency
D. How do dogs react to their owners’ commands
D
Even though they are lifeless objects, sand dunes (沙丘) can “communicate” with each other, researchers have found. A team from the University of Cambridge has found that as they move, sand dunes interact with their downstream neighbours and force them away.
It’s well-known that active sand dunes move around. Generally speaking, smaller dunes move faster and larger dunes move slower. And what hasn’t been understood is whether and how dunes within a field interact with each other.
“There are different views on dune interaction: one is that dunes of different sizes will hit each other until they form one giant dune.” said Karol Bacik, the study’s author. Now, Bacik and his workmates have shown results that query these explanations.
Water-filled flumes (水槽) are common tools for studying the movement of sand dunes in a lab setting, but the dunes can only be observed until they reach the end of the flume. Instead, Dr Nathalie Vriend, who led the research, and the members of her lab designed a circular flume, so that the dunes could be observed for hours, while high-speed cameras allowed them to record the movement of the dunes.
The two dunes in the study started with the same amount of sand. As the flow began to move across the two dunes, they started moving. At first, the front dune moved faster than the back dune, but as the experiment continued, the front dune began to slow down, until the two dunes were moving at almost the same speed. Besides, the type of flow across the two dunes was observed to be different: the front dune changed the flow’s direction, generated swirls (旋涡) on the back dune and pushed it away. As the experiment continued, the dunes got further and further apart.
“The next step for the research is to find evidence of large-scale and complex dune migration in deserts. By tracking clusters of dunes over long periods, we can observe whether measures to change the migration of dunes are effective or not, which will be a way to cope with the desertification (沙漠化),” Vriend said.
32. What is people’s previous view on sand dunes
A. They can hardly keep active all the time.
B. Dunes have negative effects on each other.
C. Their speed has nothing to do with their size.
D. Dunes of different sizes will eventually mix together.
33. What does the underlined word “query” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Follow. B. Advance. C. Question. D. Understand.
34. What can we learn from the last but one paragraph
A. The front dune is attracted by the back dune.
B. The back dune can change the front dune’s direction.
C. The front dune tries to keep its distance from the back dune.
D. The front and the back dunes will form one giant dune at last.
35. What does Vriend think of the further research on dunes
A. It is worthless.
B. It is meaningful.
C. It is challenging.
D. It is disappointing.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My knees started shaking. Anxiously, I looked through the list posted on the wall of the locker room (更衣室). As I saw all my friends’ names on that list but couldn’t find mine, I was extremely disappointed.
I thought there was a mistake. So I walked up to the coach. “Mr. Brown, are you sure that the list you posted is correct ” I asked nervously. “Yes, the names on the list are finalized. If you didn’t make it this year, there is a chance next year,” he replied.
With tears in my eyes, I ran out of the room. When I walked out, my friends crowded into the locker room to look at the finalized team list. I heard them shouting and laughing as I slowly walked away. Every one of them jumped around after seeing they made the team. Trying to forget about the situation, I headed over to the cafeteria to buy some food, but my friend Dan caught up to me on the way.
“Hey, what’s up Everybody is going to celebrate making the team at my house. Will you be there ” he asked. “I didn’t make the team,” I said, upset. “Oh, I didn’t know. I guess you can still come after school if you want,” he suggested. Dan walked away. I felt dead inside, like nothing mattered. My mind was blank (空白的) for the rest of the school day; everything my teachers said went in one ear and out the other.
After school, as I walked to the parking lot, I saw all my friends gathered at the back of the parking lot, laughing and joking. I walked around the side of the school to avoid them. I saw my father’s familiar red car pull up near the school parking lot.

Soon I realized nobody would give me a spot on the team. I’d have to earn it. I decided to work toward my goal of making the team.
The next day, after school, I immediately biked to a gym near my school. And I trained there for two hours. I ran, shot until I collapsed on the floor every single day. There were moments when I didn’t think I could keep on going, but I survived. After almost a year of practicing and training, I tried out for the school team again. The next day, seeing my name printed in large letters, I felt as though all my dreams came true in one wonderful moment.

W:It's great to see you, Steve! How was your flight
M: The process was a nightmare. I'm just happy to be here now and not late for the meeting.
W: What happened
M:⑩I flew from Seoul to Tokyo, and then from Tokyo to New York. Due to bad weather in Seoul, the plane was grounded for two hours.I missed my connection in Tokyo because of the delay. The airline only has one flight a day to New York, so I spent an hour at the ticket counter as they tried to put me on another flight.
W: Sorry to hear that!
M: Finally, they put me on another flight to New York, but I had to wait for six hours in the airport.
W: You must be tired. Let's go to the coffee shop next door and get you a cup of coffee.
M: Sounds good.I sure need it.

w:So,John,I was just in Japan. I was there for work, but I travelled alone a lot there.
M:That's nice.I also like travelling alone quite a bit.
W:You can be independent.I don't have to do a lot of planning.I can go anywhere I want to.
M:It's fun to travel with other people. But you don't get much“me time"when you do that.
W:I have a hard time sticking to a travel plan.I really like to just go sightseeing on my own.
M:I disagree with people a lot when we're going sightseeing. So it's nice to be able to just do my own things.
W: Where have you travelled alone
M: Last year,I went to Malaysia alone.I don't mink anyone else wanted to go with me.
W:I went to France, two summers ago, alone.I was able to travel all around France and didn't have to follow anyone else's schedule.
M:I feel like we should go together to China. But men it would be solo travel.
W:We can just ride me plane and then split up.

M: The Moon—while it is more than a fair distance away from us—is important to our survival. While it may not be depended upon in terms of the light or glow it gives off, it controls our tides. It's also been the focus of much attention lately with the release of Damien Chazelle's movie First Man, which looks at Neil Armstrong's journey to the satellite back in 1969.
China is reportedly planning to create and launch their very own "moon" in the name of helping low light in city areas by 2021. Built with wings not unlike solar panels, it's thought that the man-made moon will be able to focus on certain areas and zones in need of light.
According to local sources, the artificial moon will reportedly aim to offer up to eight times the brightness of our natural satellite. It's an interesting idea—one that could really catch on, if successful—though at present, other details are in fact few. The Moon already provides us with a certain amount of light—and it is always a welcoming presence in the night sky—but will a second, brighter moon help China with its plans to cut down on street lighting Who's to say—as it is not presently clear how such a moon will be launched, maintained or even kept in the air More news is expected!
