As I stood in line waiting to cash out at my favorite retail store, I studied the customer in front of me. She was young, maybe early twenties. But she already had a tired look to
her. Her face looked drawn from exhaustion. Her thin, unbuttoned winter coat had seen those bad days. The items in her cart included the cheapest cuts of meat. Powdered milk, day-old bread, bargain soap, and inexpensive shampoo completed her purchases — well, almost.
“Next!” When the cashier finally told her the cost, the woman’s face paled. She opened a purse and began counting small bills and change. It was obvious she didn’t have enough, and she scanned her groceries to see what she could do without. One by one, she removed things, but she still came up short. She continued to discard much-needed goods while the cashier set them aside patiently. The child’s items remained in the cart, however.
The woman finally paid, and moved down to bag them. When my turn came, I moved forward and placed several items the woman had taken out, whispering “Separate bags, please” to the cashier. I wondered how I could sneak the extra things into the old cart she’d brought without being caught. My clerk solved the problem by “accidentally” rolling several oranges hard enough on the conveyer belt so that they flew past the lady and onto the floor.
“I’ll get those,” the woman offered kindly and ran to pick up the runaway fruit. I quickly put the two extra bags into her cart. Just as I put the second one in, I noticed a twenty-dollar bill peeking out that I had not placed in there.
“You put that money in there, didn’t you ” I accused the clerk with a laugh when I went to pay my bill. I was surprised when she shook her head. “No, it was her,” she replied, pointing to another woman.
My small, insignificant gesture had rippled to become a larger kindness than I ever could have imagined.
What can we infer about the customer in front of “me” in Paragraph 1
She is a woman to think of others before herself.
She pretended to be poor to gain other’s sympathy.
Everything about her screamed hardship and need.
Everything she chose wasn’t what she truly needed.
What does the underlined word “discard” probably mean in Paragraph 2
A. Handle. B. Separate. C. Test out. D. Take out.
Why did the clerk roll oranges hard enough on the conveyer belt
A. To do “me” a favor. B. To train her skill.
C. To show her acting experience. D. To help increase grocery sales.
What can be the best title for the text
A. Kindness in Giving Creates Love B. What Goes around Comes around
C. Being Happy Is Enough D. More than a Coincidence (巧合)

In terms of teaching, firstly, ChatGPT is like an up-graded version of an intelligent search engine, which greatly improves my efficiency in preparing assessments. For example, I’m currently teaching a Year 4 module Digital Marketing and it’s a very practical module. In the past, I had to spend a lot of time looking for cases and examples related to the course to help students understand it. Now I just need to ask ChatGPT to
generate relevant and precise examples. Secondly, ChatGPT can help improve my teaching. Previously, I often tried to find ways to increase student participation in class, by researching questions, activities, technical tools, as well as methods. However, today I often look to ChatGPT for in-depth advice on this.
In terms of scientific research, given the academic severeness, I actually think ChatGPT can do relatively little at present. The scenes I’ve used ChatGPT for have so far been limited to just a few aspects. Firstly, proof-reading an article. Secondly, summarizing and improving an article. For example, you can import a piece of content and have ChatGPT generate the article’s overall ideas and keywords.
It seems that different universities hold different attitudes toward ChatGPT. The University of Cambridge, for example, allows students to use ChatGPT for purposes other than exams, assignments and papers. Of course, there are plenty of objections.
I think, used in the right way, ChatGPT can be of great help to students in their academic and personal growth. For example, I mentioned using ChatGPT as a smarter search engine and learning tool. ChatGPT can help students review conceptual problems after class and supplement their knowledge. Secondly, students can also use ChatGPT to do more targeted personal pursuits. For example, when applying for a master’s degree, or looking for a job, students can use ChatGPT to conduct mock (模拟) interviews and CV improvements. Note that good questions lead to good answers. Be clear about what you want from this advanced language model and ask questions with a purpose.
By Professor Martin Locket, UCL

Every machine and power station, even renewable energy like wind and solar, creates waste heat that is simply lost in the atmosphere. Thankfully, scientists and engineers are devoted to collecting heat and changing it into useful electricity. Now researchers at Penn State University have created a flexible thermoelectric ( 热电的) generator ( 发电机) that wraps around hot water or exhaust (排气) pipes, turning heat into electricity.
Flexible devices are more efficient because they attach to pipes in factories or on vehicles without having to be glued on like fixed devices. Then the thermoelectric
materials turn temperature differences between the surface fixed to the pipe and the cooler outer surface into electric current — called the Seebeck effect
Thermophotovoltaic (热光伏的) devices are another promising way to use this waste heat. University of Michigan engineers have created a machined thermophotovoltaic cell that could be used to generate electricity from extra renewable power. The cells would use heat and turn it into electricity on demand, in a form that is much cheaper than batteries, say its creators.
One of the factors important to any device’s thermoelectric efficiency is its material. If higher electrical energy can be created with smaller temperature differences, then the materials are said to have a high ZT value. Using a special material scientists have doubled the previous best. The random distribution of atoms in their material slows down the way heat passes through it, making the thermoelectric effect last longer, able to power sensors and small computer processors. Low temperature generation includes computers and cars, making pyroelectrics ( 热 电 体 ) particularly useful for squeezing more energy out of electronic systems.
Another relative advantage is inexpensive materials. More abundant elements like tin is cheap and abundant, with high ZT values when combined in the right way. Their use could lead to greener car engines.
And when it comes to personal electronics, thermoelectrics could eventually beat traditional charging hardware. Chinese researchers have built a wristband that gathers body heat to power a LED and may be able to power smartwatches or other mobile devices in the future.
What is the thermoelectric generator used for
Reducing the air pollution.
Introducing a renewable energy.
Controlling the exhaust waste.
Transforming waste heat into electrical energy.
Why does the author mention the Seebeck effect in paragraph 2
A. To illustrate a point. B. To clarify a concept.
C. To show a connection. D. To make a comparison.
What factor determines any device’s thermoelectric efficiency
A. Its high ZT value. B. Its renewable power.
C. Its temperature. D. Its electronic systems.
Which potential application of thermoelectric technology is mentioned
A. To reduce waste heat. B. To make LED.
C. To charge smartwatches. D. To start vehicles.
第二节(共 5 小题;每题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出最佳选项,选项中的两项为多余选项。
With so many different kinds of plants out there, telling them apart can seem like an impossible task. But you don’t have to have a degree in botany to start putting names to the plants you come across. Learning to recognize various species begins with studying the plants’ unique physical features carefully and recording what you see.
36 If you spot a plant outdoors and don’t have the first clue as to what it is, start identifying it by scanning your surroundings. In particular, consider the overall climate, the conditions of the terrain (地形), and any nearby water sources. A quick glance should be able to tell you what you’re looking at.
Study the plant’s features carefully. Whenever you come across a species you’ve never seen before, stop and take notes. Look over each of the individual parts, like the stems( 茎 ), leaves, and flowers. 37
Use viewing aids to take a closer look. A magnifying glass will allow you to zoom in and analyze a plant’s features in more vivid detail. Similarly, you may require a pair of binoculars or a telescopic lens when you want to inspect a particular specimen(样本) from a distance. 38
Write down the plant’s key features. 39 Be sure to make mention of attributes like size, shape, color, and texture, as well as any unique patterns or other distinguishing marks. In order to learn to identify plants on your own, you’ll need to hone ( 磨 练 ) your use of descriptive language to be as precise as possible.
Ask an expert to take advantage of their firsthand experience. Show your notes and any photos you’ve taken to a botanist, gardening specialist, or respected outdoors man and see if they can help you discover the identity of a certain plant. 40 People who have spent years studying plants can often pick them out by sight or description.
Observe the plant carefully at first.
Take your environment into consideration.
Record each characteristic in your own words.
Judge the age and shape of the plants you have found.
Without these tools, you’ll be stuck doing a lot of guesswork.
You’ll have an opportunity to absorb a little of what they know.
Most plants can be grouped and distinguished by these structures.

Accompanied by a guitar, Abao and his daughter Emily sing a famous Chinese ancient poem song. The music 71 (compose) by Abao. The poem is familiar 72 most Chinese people, as they are from one of the most well-known ancient poems “A Tranquil Night” by the great Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai.
Abao, a Chinese teacher working at 73 public school in Australia, has set more than 60 ancient Chinese poems to music, the universal language of the world, so his
“Well, come on then,” he said patiently, and handed me the javelin. Behind me I could hear some of my classmates laughing. As I grasped the javelin in my hand, I was seized with a strange feeling — a new-found excitement. For some crazy reason, I was relaxed over what I was about to do, even though I’d never done it before. I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let the thing go. The same voice that had urged me into throwing it, now told me it was a good throw.

It was not an easy journey 77 (figure) out the best way to put these poems to

language of rhythm (节奏), so how to make native English-speakers properly understand
both the tone and meaning of these ancient poems was a challenge.
“The idea of my 79 (create) is to use Western music as a framework ( 框 架 ) for the traditional Chinese poem, so that the Chinese tones and the melody can be very integrated. Chinese people feel that it is very fresh, and children 80 grew up here can

have any talent.” I just don’t buy that at all. To me, everyone has at least one talent, and
while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find, it does exist. There was a time when I
didn’t believe that. What changed my mind was a seemingly small event that took place in
2013.
At that time I was a high school student. I was a funny-looking skinny boy named Eugene Orowitz, who weighed barely 100 pounds. I was a good student, but as far as I was concerned, in just about every other department I was a loser. I wanted to fit in, to be
someone and do something well. But I hadn’t found anything I was good at. One sunny afternoon, our gym class went out to the school’s running track. The teacher taught us all various track and field events. I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin (标枪).
Suddenly something inside me began saying, “Try it! Try it!” I had to wait my turn, though, because several others wanted a break at the javelin too. Shy and scared, I watched them, trying not to look too eager. Finally, when everyone had had a chance to throw — the best
throw going about 30 yards — I looked at the teacher.
“Hey, Orowitz, you want to try ” he asked.
Embarrassed, I looked down, but managed to nod my head.听力:

I watched as the spear took off. My heart beat wildly, with my palms getting sweaty. A miracle unfolded! The javelin sailed until it flew the mark of 30 yards! So amazed was I that I froze on the spot, unable to say any single word. Soon, all the classmates present burst into thunderous applause, constantly casting admiring glances on me. At this moment, the teacher came over, gently patted my shoulder and encouraged me, “Well done, Eugene Orowitz. You can bring the javelin home as a reward.”
That night I took the javelin home with me. When I silently gazed at it, what had happened in the daytime flooded into my mind. It suddenly dawned on me that iI actually had a talent in this sport, which filled my heart with confidence. The very next day I began practicing with it, and every day that summer. By the time I was a member of the track team, all my practice paid off. I threw the javelin 211 feet that year, the best throw by any high-school boy in the country. I feel strongly that we must keep our minds open; we can’t let ourselves be discouraged or depressed when the talent doesn’t readily appear.
听力原文:
W: The food festival is fantastic. I like French food best. How about you
M: Oh, I’m in love with Greek food. It’s tasty. But Indian food is not my type.
W: We’re planning a party tonight. Don’t miss it.
M: I’m sorry. I really want to come. But my parents will come to visit me. I have to pick them up at the airport this afternoon and we’ll have dinner outside later. We haven’t met since I came to work here.
M: Hi, Jane. I’m sorry to have you wait. But I still need 15 minutes to get to your place. The traffic is too busy.
W:Take your time. The party starts at 7:30. There are still 45 minutes left. You won’t miss it.
M:Do you have any seats for this Saturday evening’s talent show
W: Yes, we still have a few tickets at $ 30.
M:Is there any discount for children
W:Children under 12 can enjoy a half price.
M:OK. We’ll need two full-price tickets and one half-price child ticket.
W: Mark, I’ve heard you watched the film Avatar: The Way of Water last night. What do you think of it
M: It’s fantastic. Although the plot is not so perfect, the visual special effects and sound effects are amazing. Especially the treatment of water is super realistic which made me think I was in a real world.
M: Do you hear that the play Hamlet will be put on this Saturday on the national theater I’ve got two tickets. Would you like to come with me
W: Oh, I really want to. But I have to look after my son. My husband won’t be back until this Sunday.
M: Don’t worry, we can ask my parents for help. They are available this weekend.
W: That’s a good idea.
W: Jack, congratulations on getting such a good job.
M: Thanks. But actually I’m tired now. In order to pass the interview, I’ve worked day and night for a whole week. It’s rather challenging to stand out in 100 applicants.
W: But it’s all worth it. The job offers high salary as well as good future. The most important thing is that you can do what you like.
M: Yeah. Since I graduated from university, I’ve been keeping looking for a job as a bridge design engineer.
W: I know. You are so crazy about bridges that every weekend you will go out to appreciate the beauty of them. By the way, will you start your new job next Monday
M: Yes. I’m excited now.
W: Steve, just put down your cola and get out of the sofa. Let’s go hiking.
M: Oh, no. It’s so comfortable lying here. Look, Rose has updated her Wechat moments. I can enjoy the beautiful scenery without going out.
W: Come on. You’re overweight and that is doing great harm to your health. Your doctor warned you last time.
M: My doctor also said I need to exercise at least 40 minutes each day. That’s too much for me.
W: Don’t be discouraged. A new study suggests even half an hour’s walk every day does people good. Let’s get started. I’ll keep you company.
M: All right. I’m coming.
W: Hi, Jack, how are you these days
M: Not so good. All the things seem to be totally out of control. New school, new teachers, new classmates. The work load is too heavy for me. And I haven’t made any friends yet. I feel like a failure. This isn’t what I expected before.
W: Don’t worry. You’ll get used to it. Don’t you forget when we first met at primary school
M: That’s because we were too little to step forward to others.
W: All things are difficult before they are easy. We can always find solutions. When you’re stressed, call your parents or old friends to get opinions. They are there all the time. Starting an easy topic with new friends is a good way to break the ice. Take easy with your study. It’s just the beginning of the term.
M: OK. I’ll try. Let’s go back home. The store is going to close up.

Dear guests, welcome to Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Located at No. 1375 Panda Road, the Base is 10 km away from the city center and over 30 km from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, which serves as a reserve for giant pandas, red pandas, and other endangered wild animals unique to China. To make you have a better experience, some rules must be followed. First, please keep quiet. Giant pandas and other animals are quiet by nature and will be stressed by loud and sudden noise. Second, you may take pictures, but you are not allowed to use a flash. The eyes of animals, especially baby pandas, are sensitive to flashes. Most important of all, do not feed animals! Your food is not suitable for them and will make them sick. At the Base, there is a tourist service center providing Chinese and foreign tourists with free services, including a microwave oven, hot water, baby carriages, armchairs, walking sticks, umbrellas and sewing kits. If you have any questions, please call 83510033. Wish you a happy journey.
