Owls are active mainly at night. They hunt when it’s completely dark. Most of us go about our business in the daytime. We hardly ever see owls, but many of us like these night birds very much.
Our love for owls has a long history, and it’s in all cultures. No matter how far you go back, there are always some types of artwork or story about an owl. These days, we can find owls on company logos, in children’s book, etc. So, what is it about owls that makes them so popular
Some bird researchers believe owls popularity lies largely in their “cool” looks. Their eyes have developed into large ones, and they use such big eyes to see clearly in the dark. Unlike human eyes, their eyes are cylindrical. So, owls cannot roll their eyes. Their heads have to do most of the rolling-around work. It’s also for this reason that owls can turn their heads almost entirely around on their necks.
Owls also use sound to hunt. Their ears are lopsided-the left ear is a bit higher than the right ear. A noise goes in one ear before it arrives in the other. This helps owls tell which direction a sound is coming from. To make their sense of hearing even better, the owl’s entire face acts like a satellite dish for sound waves. Their mouths are tiny so that they won’t get in the way.
Thanks to such unusual looks and abilities, owls became known as mysterious(神秘的)animals. Over the centuries, lots of myths(神话)about them have been created. Some have described owls as the goddess of wisdom. Some have seen them as witches. These stories have made more people become interested in owls and made these birds become more popular.

3D printing is becoming more and more popular. We are now able to print things such as clothing, musical instruments and prototype cars(原型车). But can you imagine printing food British scientists have created 3D-printed meals for a school in east London to develop an interest in science subjects among young pupils. Scientists worked with St Helen’s Primary School to create 3D-printed dishes such as fish and chips, cauliflowers or a pie for students there. The meals, served during school lunchtime, were followed by a survey. The survey found 71 percent of 11 to 16-year-old kids thought it was necessary to learn science not just in classrooms but in their daily life.
In fact, some scientists are now trying to change our dining experience by doing this. They hope that having a 3D printer in the kitchen will also become as common as the microwave or blender(食物搅拌器). Scientists say that it is easy to use: you simply have to select a recipe and put the food ‘inks’ into the printer. You can also follow the instructions to make the food exactly how you want it. This means that it would be very quick and easy to create tasty and healthy meals.
However, some people think that the future of 3D-printed food would be a disaster. It may cause many serious problems. For example, it could take away many jobs, including those for growing, transporting and packaging food. Imagine a world where there was no need for farming or growing crops and the same tastes could be printed from a ‘food ink’. Besides, traditional coffee and restaurants might lose some business. There are also worries about the nutritional(营养的)value of printed food: Is it really possible to get the nutrients our body needs from food-based inks
What’s more, cooking and eating together with family and friends has long been a traditional and enjoyable activity. It is hard to imagine a world where cooking is dead and meals can be created at the touch of a button.
