When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply: "Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith(银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as the sped through the night Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again." I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

It was a cold, sunny December day when I set out for a run in Moab, with my dog,. Taz. As a professional athlete I often went for training runs by myself, and had done this particular route before. So what happened next was just bad luck.
About an hour into my run along a remote canyon trail(峡谷小路),I hit a patch of black ice. I found myself slipping down the rock face, which became steeper(陡峭)and steeper until suddenly I was in free fall. I just remember thinking,"I've got to land this somehow."
I fell 60 feet into the canyon, landing on a four-foot square ledge (岩架);if I'd missed it there's no way I would have survived. I could feel my legs, but I was in sharp pain. Taz had managed to find his way back to me, so I knew there must be a way out of the canyon, but I couldn't stand or even crawl.
I became focused on getting out of the canyon. I shouted for help, but there was nobody around; it was the middle of December, in the middle of nowhere. I intended to drag myself to the bottom of the ravine(山峡).Every inch was an effort. It took me five hours to go quarter of a mile.
Eventually it got so dark I couldn't see where I was going, and I decided to stay where I was for the night. All I had on me were my jogging clothes, a water bottle, a couple of energy gel packets, and a shower cap which adventure racers often wear to prevent heat loss.
At night the temperature dropped below freezing. I couldn't go to sleep or I would die of hypothermia (失温),so I stayed awake doing mini-crunches – lifting my head a few inches, over and over. Taz stayed with me, providing some warmth.

When I was young, my father was quiet and seldom talked to me, so we were not so close. The times I loved most were the special moments we had together. To this day, I still hold those memories dear. When I had a son, I was always worried that my absence might have an impact on his future life and that I might miss all his milestones since I travelled a lot. I knew how important it was for a boy to have his father near. I decided that if I couldn't be with my son as often as possible, I would make every effort to create special moments for us.
When my son was five, I was sent to the branch in Shanghai, which meant I had to be away from my family for nearly a year. The hardest time for me was the summer and winter vocations when my son was out of school and families could get together doing something fun. To ease the separation, we kept writing letters to share any precious moments in our life. In one letter home, I promised my son that we would make a lantern together and sign up for the community lantern design competition on the Lantern Festival.
Everywhere I went on business, I would pick up things for our lantern adventure and send them to him. I bought a couple of handbooks on how to DIY a lantern, and I sent those on. I found special bamboo for the frame. I sent him one piece at a time, carefully packed. When I was in Hangzhou, I found the most beautiful silk with gold threads woven through it. Perfect lantern material. I sent it home. I found a golden Chinese knot that could be attached to the bottom of the lantern. I sent that home, along with some auspicious cloud(祥云) paper-cuttings that would serve as splendid decorations. Then I was on my way home.

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus (马戏). Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
It was clear that they had never been to the circus before. The father was at the head of the pack, and the mother was holding her husband’s hand. The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave that price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say ” The ticket lady gave the price again. The man didn’t have enough money.
How could he turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus
Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understood how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The creeks and streams were long gone back into the earth. It was a dry season that would bankrupt several farmers before it was through. Every day, my husband and his brothers would go about the tiring process of trying to get water to the farm. If we didn't see some rain soon, we would lose everything.
It was on this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the only miracle I have seen with my own eyes. I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He wasn’t walking with the usual carefree abandon of a youth but with a serious purpose. I could only see his back. He was obviously walking with a great effort trying to be as still as possible.
Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again toward the house. I went back to make sandwiches, thinking that whatever task he had been doing was completed.
Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful stride toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking carefully to the woods, and then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, very careful not to spill the water he held. Maybe two or three tablespoons were held in his tiny hands. I sneaked closer as he went into the wood. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw an amazing sight. A mother deer with a huge pair of deer horns appeared in front of him, with a baby fawn(幼鹿)lying on the dry ground. I almost screamed to get him away.

Jonathan's mother died when he was very young and his father brought him up. Both of them shared a very special relationship. Football was not just a game for Jonathan; it was a bond between him and his father. Every match, regardless of whether he played or not, his father would be there, a constant source of firm support.
Though his size prevented him from joining the main team, Jonathan's determination burned brighter than ever. With each practice, he improved his skills, fueled by the belief that someday his perseverance would pay off. Despite the doubts cast upon him, he pushed forward, never allowing anything to make his passion disappear.
One day, as the sun cast long shadows on the field, the coach approached Jonathan with a telegram(电报) in hand. The weight of the message pressed heavily on the young man's heart as he read the words that forever changed his world. He swallowed hard and his voice shook as he turned to the coach.
"My father.. he died this morning," Jonathan uttered, his voice filled with sorrow. His body trembled with the weight of his sadness, threatening to consume him. Tears flooded his eyes, rolling down his cheeks.
The coach, understanding Jonathan's loss, enveloped him in a comforting embrace. The warmth of his arm around Jonathan's shoulder provided a temporary comfort. Softly, the coach spoke words of relief and understanding, giving Jonathan the time and space he needed to process his overwhelming sorrow.
"Take the rest of the week off, son,"the coach said gently, his voice filled with sympathy."And don't even plan to come to the game on Saturday. Your well-being matters more than anything.”
On the day of the game, Jonathan's college team was losing badly to the opponent team. The coach and the players had all lost hope when they saw Jonathan coming towards them.Jonathan ran up to the coach and begged him to allow him to play this match.

Sara, my neighbor, and I were sitting in our yard, chatting, and frowning at the wooden house across the street.
Nobody in the neighborhood had met these two young men there yet. The two men had long hair and beards and dressed strangely. They kept to themselves. When they came outside, they never made eye contact with anyone. “They sure don’t fit into the neighborhood” Sara said, the corners of her mouth turning down as she stared at that house.
Sara said, “What about our street parties We’ve always included everyone. Should we invite them ” I sighed, “Try being nice, Sara.” Suddenly, Sara sat up straight and her eyes grew wide with curiosity when a government car pulled up before Mrs Swain’s house next door. We hurried over. Mrs Swain was recovering from cancer and lived alone. Sara and I tried to keep an eye on her.
The man from the car put a piece of paper on Mrs Swain’s door and hurriedly left. Mrs Swain looked old, thin, and very tired when she opened the door. We three looked at the paper. It read: “Someone complained your grass’ length is against city rules. Please cut it in five days, or you’ll be fined.”
It was a shame that nobody had cut her grass for her. However, Sara and I lived alone, and we were both pregnant. What was worse, we were on a tight budget, and the other families here were on vacation.
Sara and I comforted Mrs Swain, telling her we’d figure out a way. Mrs Swain blinked in confusion, “Who would complain Everyone knows that my old lawn mower is broken. And I’ve been sick too.” “It may be those two guys across the street,” Sara whispered, angrily staring at that wooden house.
Just then, a voice that seemed too gentle to be coming from the strange young man behind me said, “What is going on Is she alright ” He nodded toward Mrs Swain. Sara looked at him coldly and said, “Some guys reported her because her grass is too high.” Her eyes ran over him disapprovingly, but he didn’t seem to notice.

The Christmas holidays were fast approaching, and we had ordered many gifts online. So, when the doorbell rang, I was sure some of the packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful calico kitten (杂色猫) sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there
We figured that someone had found the kitten somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed we would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
My husband called her our little angel, so we named her accordingly. She had a calm aura (气质) about her as she walked straight into our home and hearts, fitting in perfectly. It seemed as if she was always meant to be in this big house with us. She was an old soul and turned out to be the perfect companion. Always by my side, she was more like a puppy than a kitten. Wise beyond her years, she enjoyed wandering through the tunnels and mysterious rooms as much as I did, but with much less fear. Angelica the calico was courageous.
So, I took a page from her book and decided to be brave, too. There was an underground stone cellar (地窖) I had been eager to explore. The only way in was down a rickety (摇晃的) ladder to its murky depths. I guessed it was an old root cellar, probably twelve feet deep.
I had promised my husband that I wouldn’t explore dangerous areas unless he or someone else was around. Though I knew I was stretching it, I figured that Angelica would count as my companion. I was ready to explore this cellar, and so was she.
I equipped myself with a good flashlight and warm clothes, and carefully started down the rickety ladder while Angelica was looking down at me from above. Faint crack and sudden crash were what I could remember.

Mr. Maude was thinking about what to buy for his wife as a gift for their 10th wedding anniversary(周年纪念日).One day,he happened to notice Mrs.Maude talking to a friend, showing interest in her ruby ring and he realized he would be able to make Mrs. Maude happy if he bought one for her. Mr. Maude couldn't understand why ladies had so much passion for expensive stones of all colors, but he would be willing to do anything for his wife for such a great occasion.
As SM is a famous jewelry brand(珠宝品牌),Mr.Maude decided to buy the ruby ring from their online store. He found the store and contacted them. A lady at the customer service recommended one that she promised no lady could refuse. It was worth $12, 000. Of course, it would cost Mr. Maude an arm and a leg, but he thought Mrs. Maude deserved it. Without much hesitation, Mr. Maude bought what the service lady recommended, expecting to give his wife a big surprise. What he didn't expect was that what he finally received from SM was more than a surprise.
Days after Mr. Maude placed the order online, he received a parcel from SM when his wife was taking care of the garden. Thinking that he needed to take a look at the real thing before he gave it to his wife, he took the parcel to the bedroom and opened it. Inside the package, there was some wrapping bubble plastic sheets. When Mr. Maude emptied the package, to his surprise, he found not one but two ring boxes. Inside each box, there was a ruby ring. The two rings are only slightly different from each other. "This is obviously not supposed to be a buy-one-get-one-for-free offer. Ruby rings are just too expensive for that. Most probably, this is a mistake of some kind,” Mr. Maude said to himself.

For the initial ten years of his life, Victor was the prince of the household. As he was an only child, his parents petted him and showered all their love and attention on him. Whatever toys his parents bought, they were always meant for him. Whatever food was in the refrigerator, there was no one to compete with him to polish it off first. Victor could leave his toys or books around the house with complete ease of mind, knowing that there was no one who would get their hands on his belongings and cause any damage.
However, all that was to change overnight when Victor's parents brought back his new baby sister, Lina, from the hospital. With her rosy cheeks, wide open eyes and angelic smile, Lina caught the hearts of her parents, grandparents and relatives. Everyone focused their attention on the cute bunch of joy. Whenever she cried, her mother or father would rush to her bed. She simply cried because she wanted to be carried. There was little time left for Victor.
Now that Victor's mother had his baby sister to take care of, she expected Victor himself to do most of the chores he can do. Victor was asked to clean his own room, iron his own school uniform and clean his own shoes. Before Lina's arrival, he had never lifted a finger to help out with these tasks. The whole family also went out less because it was unhealthy to expose Lina to the bacteria(细菌)being in the outside world too often.
Victor felt neglected by his parents. He felt that they loved Lina more than him. As a result, he tried to attract his parents'attention by becoming resistant. One evening, Victor's parents were called up by his teacher because Victor had got into a fight at school. His teacher had noticed Victor's behaviour and work attitude changing downwards in tl past two months. Before that, he had been a model student.

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. In silence, we knew we'd made a big, embarrassing, and silly mistake. We regretted misunderstanding the two kind men, and just stood there awkwardly.
Para 2:
After they finished the work, Sara and I walked in shame to apologize for judging them. "Forgive us for being rude," we said. They just humorously replied with a joke to get us out of our guilt. Later, Mrs Swain carried juice and homemade cookies to the tired men. Mrs Swain thanked them and offered to pay them. But one man smiled, "We'll keep your grass cut if you keep making juice and cookies for us" That day, we learned a lesson. Sadly, however, no signal. If only I could get the still-functioning phone up through the door, it might connect to the Internet, so I could shout at Siri from down below for help. It seemed my companion, Angelica, was my last hope. She kept her eye on me. Waving the phone, I instructed “Angel! catch it!” With a deep breath and a silent prayer, I cast the phone upward. Miraculously, Angel managed to catch it with her paws as it shot through the door and lay it right by the entrance. Once it connected to the Internet, I yelled at Siri to call emergency services. With them on the line, I screamed out my situation. When heavy footsteps came near, I knew I was saved. I no longer wonder if it was Angel who rang the doorbell that day.

They decided to have a heart-to-heart talk with him. They explained to him that although Lina demanded more of their time, that did not mean that they loved him any less. They promised Victor they would always be there for him.
Para 2:
Victor realized that his parents still cared for him, He accepted the fact that he was old enough to do many things by himself and should start learning to be independent. He promised his parents he would no longer behave badly simply to attract their attention. From that day on, Victor became a good big brother to Lina. He helped his mother look after Lina whenever she was busy. Victor, Lina and their parents lived together as a happy, loving family.
