Anna was the school's best dancer and this was what she told her parents everyday. "Mrs. Kelly says I am very gifted," she said, "She says maybe I will be the best dancer in our ballet(芭蕾)team. "
Mrs. Kelly had said these things, but she had said so to a number of dancers in order to encourage them because she believed it's important to get students inspired. Anna was also inspired by her words to be winner and beat everyone else. However, Mrs Kelly actually preferred that Anna just liked to dance on the stage.
"Students! Students!"Mr. Kelly called to the small group of girls around Anna. "I'd like to introduce to you our new student, Sally. She loves dancing as you do. I hope you all take time to say hi to her nicely."
Anna looked at Sally with dancing shoes in her hands. Sally did not have a dancer's body: She was short, with legs that looked like they belonged to a frog instead of an eleven-year-old girl. Anna felt relaxed and was sure this girl would not dance well.
In the following weeks, however, it turned out that Anna made a wrong guess about Sally's dancing performance. In fact, Sally was not just a good dancer, but an amazingly gifted dancer. She danced in beautiful ways that Anna thought was impossible for such a short girl.
What's more, Sally was a nice girl. She often helped girls with difficult dance moves. She was active, She was smart, and everyone liked her. It seemed that Sally was taking everything away from Anna.
Anna was sad and mad. The school ballet team would pick out the best dancer in only two weeks. She worried that Sally would win the contest and become the best dancer.

Brodie and his father lived in a caravan (宿营拖车) ever since his mother died and they lost their house. Now they worked for Miss Martha in the garden.
Brodie's father had been a famous violin player. Brodie loved to watch how his father made the bow dance and glide (滑动) across the strings. When he turned 12, his father taught him how to play the instrument properly. Brodie was a fast learner and soon he could play the violin almost as well as his dad.
One day, Miss Samson, Brodie's teacher, asked if anyone could play the violin. A talent scout (星探) was coming to school. He was looking for someone to play in the musical Mr Spy.
Hollie Larson's hand went up fast. "I can play the violin," she said. "I play in competitions." Brodie kept quiet, but his friend Cam said, "Brodie has a violin and he can play it too."
Brodie slid down in his seat. There was no way he would be good enough to play for an audience. He wasn't going to make a fool of himself. Hollie Larson was good at everything.
"Bring your instruments tomorrow for a trial run," the teacher said. "And oh, if you are selected, the pay is good!"
Brodie's father let him take the violin. "But do take good care of it, Brodie," he said.
Hollie Larson offered to play first. She was good, really good. Brodie suddenly felt embarrassed. There was no way he could play after her. But Miss Samson's voice was demanding. "Brodie," she said. "Your turn!"
Brodie felt his face get hot as he pulled out the violin. But the minute the bow touched the strings, Brodie was transported to a different world. He was back in Martha's garden listening to his father. The room, was silent as Brodie walked back to his seat. And then came the applause, everyone clapping, except Hollie Larson.
Since the talent scout would come the next morning, Brodie decided to put the violin case on a high shelf in the classroom that night. It was the safest place, he thought. But, he was wrong!

I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs, so when the annual winter recital was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs.
My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing letdown into something worthwhile. "You can perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living," my mom suggested brightly. "I'm sure the seniors there who do not have families visit them that often, would really appreciate the music and you could play more than just two songs."
I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents there with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the coming days, I worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy, including many old classics.
When the much-anticipated day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. Walking through the enormous double doors, we stepped into an entryway that overlooked the spacious grand dining room. Right at the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just waiting to make some music to liven the place up a bit. At nearly every table several gray-haired women or men were seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded room provided. Despite the conversations going on at various tables though, isolation hung like a dark cloud in the room.
Almost immediately, we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced herself as Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 a.m. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
I walked to the door and knocked. "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly towards the car.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing," I told her.
"I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated."
"Oh, you're such a good man," she said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown "
"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.
"Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice(临终医院). I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long."
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
At dawn, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now." We drove in silence to the address she had given me.
"How much do I owe you " she asked.
"Nothing," I said.
"You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I answered. She said thanks to me, but she looked so sad.

On one stormy afternoon last year, I was running home from school with my umbrella when I heard a bird start to sing. Out of curiosity, I went to have a look. Then I saw a brightly colorful bird nesting in a big tree. But the nest suddenly fell off.
With mercy and love, I decided to see if the bird had a chance to survive. Just as I went closer, I noticed a little head sticking out of the nest. I found that it had a wet broken wing, so it couldn't fly. It looked so weak as if it were dying. So I placed it gently in my hand and covered it with my umbrella.
I carefully took it home and thought down the road how to explain this to my parents. What if they would not want it and throw it away I could not take that chance, so I went out and put it in the back garden and gave it a warm blanket for the night.
In the following days, I went to school as usual, but somehow, I fell in love with biology class, especially when the teacher explained something about birds. I learned to feed the bird, and I hurried to care for it when the school was over. It was slowly recovering and growing. Holiday came at last. I couldn't help telling my good friends about it. Then we secretly went to the back garden to look at my lovely bird. However, we were amazed to find that it had been missing.
Just as I thought where it had gone, a great surprise came all of a sudden. I found it staring at my cat in the distance. Catching sight of my appearance, it turned and came towards me. So I went to get it some water and birdseed. It was then that I found it grew into a big bird like a phoenix(凤凰) in the fairy tale. My friends all praised it, "What a beautiful bird it is!" Hearing their words, I felt truly proud. Fortunately, my care was not in vain but paid off.

Some years ago, a ship headed for China. All the passengers boarded the ship, including an officer, his wife, their only child—a little boy five years old, and a large Newfoundland dog called Bobby. Everybody in the ship liked Bobby, he was so good-tempered and playful, but the boy was the dog's constant playmate. He was a happy little guy, and the two are so fond of each other.
One evening while the little boy and the dog were playing together, the ship shook suddenly, and splash(扑通一声) went the child into the sea!
A cry was raised, "A hand over! A hand over!" and the brave dog jumped over the side of the ship, and swam towards the boy.
The little boy's father, half crazy, jumped with others into a small boat; but it was too dark to see far before them. All gave the child up for lost.
At last they heard a splash on the left side of the ship. "Pull on, quick!" cried the father. The boat was turned, the men pulled with all their strength, and in a moment brave Bobby was alongside, holding up the child in his mouth! Joy! Joy! Joy!
The boat was rowed back to the ship; the half-drowned(差点淹死的) boy soon got better; the parents were delighted; and brave Bobby was caressed(抚摸) by all.
At the Cape-of-Good-Hope, the passengers were to be landed. The officer going to the boat, with his wife and child; but he told the sailors to hold the Newfoundland dog tight by the collar till the boat was some distance from the ship. "You will then see," said he, "what a strong swimmer he is."
Brave Bobby pulled again and again to get loose, but all failed; for they held him till the boat was near the shore. But as soon as the officer gave the signal, the dog was set free, and away he went into the sea to chase after(追赶) his masters.

I have always loved libraries ever since I was a boy. Over the years I have read more books than I can count and I have visited the local libraries more times than I can remember. Now in the age of the Internet and with so many faces in screens instead of books, I am concerned that places like these will begin to fade away and we will lose all the joy they bring.
I stopped at the library nearest my home just the other day. It was right off from the local grade school and had been my home since I was young. I opened the door and walked inside. The librarian, David, greeted me warmly, "Good afternoon, Jane. Welcome to the library again." On the desk next to him sat a beautiful, black cat. "Good afternoon, Mr David. What a cute cat!" I patted the cat gently on the head and smiled.
I gave David a book I wanted to donate and then wandered into the back room to look at the books for sale. The black cat had returned to the room. She stretched. She sharpened her claws for a moment on the furniture. Then she jumped up on the shelf. She meowed(喵喵叫) and let her head up against my hand hoping that I would start petting her again. I smiled and petted her head, and spoke sweetly to her while she rolled on her back.
I thought that if only we could let our guard down as easily and openly as this cat then this world would be a lot more beautiful. I gave my new furry friend some food and then walked out. Then I picked out a book about animal protection, where I learned a lot. The world is full of life, wisdom and love. Let's benefit from people, nature, books and libraries, and occasionally friendly cats.

It was a lovely spring morning in the mountains of my home. Here was full of natural atmosphere. The sky was blue, the sun was warm, and the air was fresh. As driving along the winding road, I could see thousands of wild flowers in bloom. When I turned round, I slowed down as I saw some volunteers picking up garbage along the side of the road. I just smiled as I saw them doing some cleaning in spring for Mother Earth and my mind suddenly floated back in time to another spring morning long ago.
When my children were younger, I used to walk along a small route around the lake near my home. It was also on a spring morning that I noticed much garbage lying along the route. The next day, I brought a big garbage bag and started to slowly pick up the garbage along my way. All kinds of deserted objects lay all over the floor. There were pop cans, plastic water bottles, wrappers for candy bars, empty chip bags, pieces of broken fishing line and even an old shoe. Every time I stopped, I picked up a piece of garbage. And I even fished some garbage out of the edge of the water. By the time I circled the lake, the garbage bag had been nearly full.
Tired but happy, I put the bag in an empty garbage can. I stopped before I headed home and took one last look at the lake as the sun set. It looked more beautiful than ever and I felt like the angels were looking down upon it with me and sharing my smiles.
I always think that at times this world's problems can seem overwhelming and you may wonder what you can do to make a difference. But the truth is that every good thing you do matters a lot! I do believe every time I stop to pick up a single piece of garbage, I can make a difference. As my children are adults now, I decide to spend more time protecting the environment.

答案以及解析
1. 答案:
Anna felt upset and then she thought out a plan. Somehow, she even was a little excited about the plan when thinking that maybe she would be the best dancer. She began to think of the plan carefully. Firstly, she thought Sally must perform badly and leave a terrible impression on audience on the stage. Therefore, she decided to put something that couldn't be found in Sally's shoes. An idea hit her: sand, which seemed to be the most suitable thing for this plan. As a result, Anna put some sand in Sally's shoes secretly.
Sally put on her dancing shoes, feeling something wrong with them. However, she insisted on dancing with the smiling expression to present the perfect condition. All these things were caught by Anna who was standing on the wing. Looking at her insistence with pain, Anna felt a sense of guilt instead of the pleasure from success of the plan. So, Anna told the truth in shame and chose to withdraw from the competition after Sally limped painfully off the stage. To her surprise, Sally smiled and said, "it's the friendship rather than the best dancer that matters." Anna was moved deeply and headed for the stage.
2. 答案:
The next morning when he arrived, he found the case had fallen. Brodie could hardly believe his eyes. The neck of the violin was broken. That was when the talent scout came into the room. "Your teacher tells me there is real talent here," he said, looking around. "I'm looking forward to hearing you." Again, it was Hollie Larson who played first. Brodie listened but seemed to hear nothing. He saw that the talent scout smiled and whispered something to Miss Samson. When it was Brodie's turn, Brodie lowered his head and explained his situation, overwhelmed by a wave of sadness.
Suddenly, Hollie Larson walked toward him, holding out her violin—"Use mine," she said. Brodie was stunned. Hollie really longed to win, but now she was offering him a chance. He had thought it was she who damaged his violin! He shook his head, but she insisted. "If you can't play, that's not a real win." Casting a grateful glance at her, Brodie took over the violin. While playing, he felt his inner world coming back to peace. The talent scout was on his feet, smiling and clapping. So Brodie won the selection and was to play the violin in Mr Spy. Hollie didn't win, but she and Brodie became true friends.
3. 答案:
As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound. Feeling as if the whole world was watching me, I was struck dead with embarrassment. How could I perform the song without the piano I was on pins and needles when Phyllis slowly made her way to the front of the crowd of dinners and announced in a comforting tone, "This girl has come to sing for us but the piano seems to be a little nervous." Almost immediately, there was scattered applause and several people stepped forward to help me plug in the piano and set the microphone. With everything ready, I took a deep breath and commenced my performance.
Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old. One woman got up and began to animatedly dance about the room. Some of the people swayed in their chairs to the beat of the music while others tapped theirs toes. The performance ended up with a storm of applause from the crowd. I realized that it was far better than a piano recital because almost everyone seemed to truly appreciate my music and I' m proud that I have the power to spread kindness to them. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, leading to me sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.
4.答案:
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. Before the woman left, I said to her, "My mother treated everyone kindly. She is a great person, but she passed away years ago. You are like my mother." The woman said, "Thank you. If you want to visit me, I'll tell you my story." Then the woman left. After a long pause, I drove the taxi to go home.
The next day I was on my way to visit her. The old woman told me that she used to be a millionaire. She became immersed in making money. She was the owner of a particular building we saw last night. But she neglected her family. Her only son died one year ago because of cancer. She sold everything to save him, but failed. How sad! At last, the old woman said to me, "Life is short, but please be in no hurry. Though everyone has to earn money to make a living, always remember that family is the most important thing to you." I said nothing but nodded hard.
5.答案:
Suddenly, my parents appeared in the back garden. At first, I was a little nervous because I hid the truth about it. At that time, I had to ask them, "May I have a phoenix-like bird as a pet " To my great relief, Mum looked at the bird and me in surprise and said, "You can keep it as long as you could take care of it." I reacted quickly, "I promise." But Dad added thoughtfully, "But dear, birds belong to nature. They need a wider world."
Some days later, my friends and I wondered what to do with the bird. My best friend offered to ask for our biology teacher for help. Everyone thought it was a good idea. After learning the details of the bird's release, we decided to set it free. It was another afternoon, we came to the woods, where the streams were flowing, and the birds were singing in the trees. We believed it was a good place for my lovely bird to live in. Watching the bird flapping its wings and flying away, we all cheered.
6. 答案:
Suddenly the poor animal set up a shrill howl, and threw himself out of the water. "A shark! A shark!" sounded from the boat to the ship. Bobby swam right and left, and dived and made sharp turns, showing his teeth, and never allowing the shark time to turn on his back, without doing which the monster could bite him. Poor Bobby swam and dodged(躲闪), till he was almost tired out. "Stop rowing," cried the officer to the men "and turn the boat back."
Just at that moment the shark, which had got very close to the dog, turned on his back and opened his horrid mouth! Bobby was all but gone. His master, the officer rose, pointed his gun, and fired. In a moment the water was tinged with blood: the horrid jaws of the shark were shattered to pieces! The men then rowed to the spot where Bobby was swimming about. The officer pulled the dog into the boat; the child threw his little arms around him; and the men in the boat, and the sailors in the ship, cried out with joy!
7. 答案:
After that, I brought food for the cat every time I went to the library. Whenever I walked into the library, the cat came to me quickly. She stared at me with her big eyes and meowed at the same time. She rubbed against me, asking me to pet her. I would give food to her to eat. Then she would sit beside me while I was reading. When I left the library, she followed me to the door to see me off. I patted her on the head to tell her to go back.
One day, when I came to the library, the cat greeted me with five little cats. I couldn't wait to ask David, "Where are the baby cats from " He said the cat became a mother not long ago and that he loved the group. But he also complained that he could no longer afford to keep so many cats. I told him I could adopt them. He was glad to agree. Thus I took them home that day. I made them a small house so that they could have a comfortable home. Now we live happily and harmoniously together.
8. 答案:
I begin to encourage others to develop the environmental awareness. I know that there is power in numbers, and I want to get as many people involved as possible. I've convinced my children to take action with me like I did before. We learn to make many cards to hand out to people, with some words about environment protection written on them. We've also set up signs around the lake to remind people to pay attention to the environment. Other members of my family also go to the lake to pick up garbage on weekends.
Many days have passed, and the surroundings have improved a lot. Thanks to our efforts, the lake has taken on a new look. The surroundings are clearer and there is no more garbage floating on its water. There is little garbage on either side of the road along the lake. It is surprising that many people take their garbage away. Few people drop garbage here. I am pleased to note that more people actively volunteer to pick up the garbage. This gives us more confidence to protect our nearby environment.
