1. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I didn't see the thin plastic tape running across the bread bag when I put the bread in my shopping cart or when I checked out. It wasn't until I unpacked the bread at home that I realized that I'd broken the rules again.
That stupid plastic tape joined the long list of mistakes I made in just one week of trying to eat plastic-free. Last month, I challenged myself to purchase a week's worth of food without bringing home any plastic. That meant no yogurt containers or plastic packages.
I chose a budget of $115 (roughly half-way between the average weekly grocery bill for a family of two in Massachusetts). On Saturday afternoon, I pulled into the parking lot of a well-known zero-waste shopping center.
I started in the produce section, where I typically got a plastic bag of organic baby carrots. This time, I could not go there because every vegetable in the organic section was packed in plastic containers. But I found some beautiful carrots among the non-organic produce. Then I saw the plastic price labels hanging off their rubber bands. I rolled my cart past the green beans and grapes, all inside the plastic. I weighed loose apples, onions and sweet potatoes. My anxiety kicked in — a feeling that I wouldn't have enough. So, I bought a head of cabbage.
I tapped prices into the calculator on my phone. Leaving the produce section, I was in good shape, at $32. It was time to search for protein.
I headed to the meat counter. Again, everything was prepackaged in plastic. But the man behind the glass kindly agreed to put some chicken and meat, separately, in paper bags. Together they were $21.
Tofu, cheese, yogurt and pretty much everything in the dairy section were prepackaged in plastic. Even the bottled milk had a plastic cap. But there were lots of eggs in those paper bags.

A little girl whose parents had died lived with her grandmother and slept in an upstairs bedroom. One night there was a fire in the house and the grandmother died while trying to rescue the child. The fire spread quickly, and the situation was terrible.
Neighbours called the fire department, then stood helplessly by, unable to enter the house because flames blocked all the entrances. The little girl appeared at an upstairs window, crying for help, just as word spread among the crowd that the fire- fighters would be delayed a few minutes because they were all at another fire.
Suddenly, a man appeared with a ladder, put it up against the side of the house and disappeared inside. When he reappeared, he had the little girl in his arms. He delivered the child to the waiting arms below, then disappeared into the night.
An investigation revealed that the child had no living relatives, and weeks later a meeting was held in the town hall to determine who would take the child into their home and bring her up.
A teacher said she would like to raise the child. She pointed out that she could ensure her a good education. A farmer offered her an upbringing(教养) on his farm. He pointed out that living on a farm was healthy and satisfying. Others spoke, giving their reasons why it was to the child's advantage to live with them.
Finally, the town's richest resident rose and said, "I can give this child all the advantages that you have mentioned here, plus money and everything that money can buy."
Throughout all this, the child remained silent, her eyes on the floor.
"Does anyone else want to speak " asked the meeting chairman. A man came forward from the back of the hall. He walked slowly and appeared to be in pain.

One Saturday afternoon, I was watching TV in the living room with my grandpa when a blinding flash of lightning flashed across the sky, followed by a deafening sound, and the pictures on TV disappeared with that sound. Before I realized what had happened, a gray-white shadow rushed in through the open window and flew over my head. Bang! It hit the wall and slid off to the floor. Shaking with fear, I approached it cautiously and saw that it was a pigeon. It looked at me in fear, trying to open its wings and struggling its feet, but apparently powerless.
So I called my grandpa and immediately set out to give it a helping hand. Taking it in my hands, I felt a few drops of warmth on my hands. It was blood! I gently spread its wings and there were a few red feathers inside. "Don't worry. We'll get it out alive," Grandpa said to me. Then he got the first-aid kit. With some cotton, we dried the blood, cleaned the wound and then put it under a hairdryer to dry. All went smoothly, for the pigeon had no strength left to resist. There happened to be an empty birdcage at home, so I put it in gently and added a little water and some grains.
For the next few days, the moment I got home from school, I would run to feed the pigeon. And Grandpa helped a lot, tidying up the cage daily. Little by little, its strength returned. One evening, I fed it with the biscuit I was eating. It enjoyed it! One week later, its wound almost healed(痊愈); its feathers grew and it became brave. Whenever I sat at the table eating biscuits, it looked up at me, cooing(咕咕地叫) constantly. To my joy, I could also reach into the cage to touch it. When I gently fingered its head, it playfully pecked(啄) at me. Finally it completely recovered. But every time I was with it, it seemed restless in the cage. To make it happy and pretty, I tied an orange string(线) around its leg.

There I was stuck AGAIN. This was the same feeling that overwhelms me every year. But this year it was different, because if I failed this exam I would not graduate. I sat there, panic stricken, unable to move. Pressure crushed in on me. What if I could not go to high school Would Dad and Mum kick me out of their house
I took two deep breaths and looked up. I could see the teacher pacing up and down. The classroom was dead silent except for the clock. Tick Tock. Tick Tock. I checked the clock for the third time. Ten minutes left! I clenched(握紧) and unclenched my fist in an attempt to calm myself. Think! I told myself. I knew I could do this. My hand couldn't help trembling. Then I scribbled(胡乱写下) the first few words that hit me.
"It isn't my fault..."
I stared blankly at those words. At the comer of my eye, I could see my teacher walking towards me. She was checking on our progress! Dread built up within me. Then, I glanced at the four words again. Without any warning, my hand moved to write.
Hair on my arms stood as the teacher leaned in and started to read my work. I peered over to see my teacher's expression, praying that my work had not brought in disappointment. To my astonishment, she displayed a clear satisfaction! That was good, wasn't it I hurriedly looked down at my essay.
I skimmed it through. I felt proud. Now, there's something I was still worried about. I checked the clock. Two minutes left! I was still writing!
I bit my lip, took a deep breath, and concentrated on writing. I heard the teacher leave.
"There's one minute left. Please check your work." the teacher reminded us.

Getting to watch surgery should be exciting for any medical student. But in my case, while two doctors were doing the operation, I was checking my phone every 20 seconds to see how much longer it would be until I could leave. I didn't belong there; I was only pretending to be there. The truth was that, halfway through university, I knew I didn't want to be a doctor. And I had to decide whether to keep lying to myself, or change my major.
Before university, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I'd always wanted to study English but my parents didn't approve, saying there was no money in it. So I figured I'd just pick a career that looked well-paid, satisfying, and would make my parents proud. "Doctor" is the first choice, so I decided to study medicine. I knew all the coursework wouldn't be easy, but I didn't expect to find it as hard as I did. I spent many late nights and weekends studying, but still didn't get good grades. I just couldn't keep the material in mind. By exam time, my grades were terrible and I felt like a fool. I thought maybe a medical internship(实习医生的工作) would help raise my spirits. Absurdly, my internship was where I realized how little I wanted to be a doctor.
Every day I'd just go into work and do exactly what I was told, go where I was told to go, and watch what I was told to watch. And then I'd go home. It was fun whenever I got to play with expensive microscopes or watch crazy surgery, but the rest of the time I struggled to get through the day. The other interns, however, practically worked so hard. They were so driven. I thought, "Wow, these interns really want to be doctors. I obviously don't. "It was a sad realization that sadder, scarier question: If I didn't want to be a doctor, what did I want to do

Driving on the mountain roads where I live can be both a great pleasure and an adventure at times. Yet, you should always look out for holes, deer, skunks and squirrels crossing the road, as well as fallen trees and broken rocks that have rolled down the side of the hill.
I came upon one of those rocks just the other day. I saw a car turn around it and the truck just ahead of me run over it. I turned too and then quickly pulled over to a wide place. I knew a rock that size would break parts of a low riding car like mine if the driver didn't see it in time to move. I walked over and picked up the huge stone. It must have weighed 50 pounds but I tried my best, and finally I got it into the ditch(沟) and walked smiling back to my car.
The happening reminded me of an old story I had read once. In a faraway land a king had placed a huge rock on the road leading to his palace. Many nobles walked by and around it complaining(抱怨)that the king didn't keep the road up better. Finally, a poor farmer arrived pulling a cart of vegetables. He stopped and rolled the rock off the road with all his strength. Then he saw under it was a bag of gold coins that the king had left for the one who cleared the path for those who came after.
Now while there wasn't any bag of treasure under the rock I moved, my heart did feel a little more golden as I walked back to my car. Maybe the real reward(奖励) is the love we feel, the good we do and the kindness we share. Then an idea came to my mind: why not make the road safer to drive on

I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a newspaper around the culture we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. B. informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. Missy was one of my friends. I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day, I anxiously expected the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. B called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy's name was called. "So I'm in group tree," I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!
Then I heard it. The last group: "Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina." I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group — the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who wore weird(怪异的) clothes. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends.
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. B. She looked at me and knew what I was there for. I was determined to convince her I should be in the "good" group. "Why " I started.
She gently placed a hand on my shoulder. "I know what you want, Karina," she said, "but your group needs you. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this task. Only you can help them."

The Difference a Teacher Can Make
Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was about to be lost forever by the U.S. education system. Remarkably, he could read, yet, he was failing. He had been failing since first grade. Though Steve looked bigger than his age, yet he went unnoticed… until Miss White.
Miss White was a smiling, young, beautiful lady! Steve liked his new teacher; yet, still he failed. He never did his homework. Whenever he was punished for failing to turn in his homework, he felt just terrible! Still, he did not study.
Last week, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods, where he often stayed alone after school. He was always alone because no one cared. Oddly, Steve never missed a day of school.
One day, Miss White's impatient voice broke into his daydreams.
"Steve!" Shocked, he turned to look at her.
"Pay attention!" Miss White began to go over the test results for the seventh grade. "You all did pretty well," she told the class, "except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but..." She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp stare. "The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!" She just stared at Steve, as the class turned around for a good look. Steve dropped his eyes and carefully examined his fingertips.
"Just try it! ONE WEEK!" He was unmoved.
"You're smart enough! You'll see a change!" Nothing changed him.
"Give yourself a chance! Don't give up on your life!" Nothing.
"Steve! Please! I care about you!"

答案以及解析
1. 答案:
At checkout, I still had $62 left but I could not find anything else without plastic. So I became a little bit angry and complained to the manager that there were too many things I couldn't buy plastic-free. There was no dairy or juice. He said he's interested in using more recyclable containers, but they were much more expensive. He also told me that it's hard to add that cost to the price of food, and that paper bags for nuts, beans or snacks weren't as attractive on shelves as plastic bags.
At the moment, I realized that perhaps I shouldn't have had aimed too high. After all, most customers had to shop with their eyes on their wallets. The major plastic producers could not be closed down immediately. Thus, I decided to just reduce the plastic that I used once and threw away. Anyway, I was happy that I avoided using 27 plastic containers in the week. Maybe I could do better.
2. 答案:
When he got to the front of the hall, he stood directly in front of the little girl and held out his arms. His hands and arms were terribly scarred. The little girl cried out, "This is the man who rescued me!" With a leap, she threw her arms around the man's neck. She buried her face in his shoulder and sobbed for a few moments. Then she looked up and smiled, stating happily she would live with him.
When asked her choice, the girl gave people the reasons firmly. She said in a low but determined voice, "I really desire to get a good education that will give me chances to live my dreams. Besides, I know that money means a lot to me since I have no relatives to rely on. But it's the man who saved my life when I was desperately facing a fire like that. Without him, I wouldn't be here, waiting for a new choice. I hope that I can do whatever I can to pay back his kindness."
3. 答案:
One day, however, when I returned home, Grandpa met me at the door, looking embarrassed. I asked him what had happened. He turned around and pointed to the birdcage, apologizing to me that the pigeon slid out when he was tidying up the cage and flew away through the open window. Gone! I couldn't believe my ears. I rushed over to the birdcage. Just empty! I stared at the remaining water and grains, tears streaming down my cheeks. "Where has it gone Will it be hurt again Will it come back ..." I asked Grandpa, sobbing. "It will fly back!" he convinced me, wiping away my tears gently.
Sure enough, I saw a pigeon flying into the house the next afternoon! It perched near the birdcage, cooing. Despite great excitement, I approached it quietly. It was gray-white and had an orange string tied to one leg. My pigeon came back! "It must be hungry," Grandpa grinned. Immediately, I fed it with grains and then tiptoed to the window and closed it, urging Grandpa to cage it. But he didn't. "Pigeons need freedom," he explained to me patiently. I was hesitant but looking at the pigeon wandering and pecking at the grains peacefully, I realized Grandpa was right! I turned back to the window and opened it.
4. 答案:
"One minute left " I exclaimed. Everybody looked at me weirdly. I looked down, feeling ashamed. But I had to finish the paper. I tried to ignore everything and continue writing. One more word, I said to myself, come on. Just like this, I forced myself to concentrate and willed my hand to scribble whatever that popped up on my mind. "Time's up! Put your pens down. Please hand in your test paper to me in the front." the teacher announced. I finished! I put down my pen, breathing a sigh of relief, and then I stood up and limped towards the teacher to hand it in-my legs felt like noodles, thanks to the extreme tension.
A week later, the teacher handed the papers back to us. It was the time for truth! I folded my paper and held it tightly in my hands, shilly-shallying about whether to check the result in front of my classmates. Finally I decided I should face my fate bravely and unfolded it. It was an "A"! I could not believe my eyes. How could it be It was the first time in my life that I had got an "A". I turned to look at my teacher. Our eyes met. She nodded and gave me a big smile! At that point, I made a firm resolution: I'd be more hard-working and more confident, so that I wouldn't be stuck and panic like this again in high school.
5. 答案:
It wasn't an easy decision. I had two choices—either keep lying to myself or do a different degree. Changing my major would make the past two years of university a waste of time and money. But I realized that though I'd hate myself for quitting, I'd hate myself more if I ended up being a terrible doctor. I was glad to move onto something new, but I had to deal with my parents' constant disappointment and complaining about my future.
Eventually, I changed my major to English writing and suddenly I found university enjoyable. I was still studying late and through the weekend, but, this time, enjoying the pain. I'd spend hours perfecting a single paragraph until I was satisfied with it. Five hours felt like 20 seconds because I was having so much fun burying myself in writing until good words came out. I started looking for internships that would give me experience in professional writing. Fortunately, I made it as an editorial assistant at a newspaper.
6. 答案:
I told my friends what I thought. They were all amazed by the inspirational idea and applauded. Actions speak louder than words. Immediately, we began to make concrete plans about it. One said that we should plant flags where there were holes to remind drivers to be careful. As if inspired, another said excitedly that we could also put billboards on places where animals, like deer, skunks and squirrels, would always come and go. I smiled with relief and put forward that maybe it was also a good idea that we should find all the fallen stones and remove them as we drove along the road.
Now we are trying our best to help drivers and keep the road safe. All of us are busy planting flags, putting billboards and removing stones and we are all satisfied with what we have done. When I'm removing a stone, a driver gives me a thumbs-up, happily saying, "Your hearts are like gold." I'm thrilled, thinking of the king again. Suddenly, another good idea hit me-maybe I can take some pictures and post them on the Facebook to appeal for more attention.
7. 答案:
I was amazed after hearing what she said. "Will you help them " she asked. "Yes," I replied. I couldn't believe it came out of my mouth, but it did. I had committed. As I bravely walked to where the others in my group sat, I could hear the laughter from my friends. I sat down and we started. Different newspaper columns were assigned according to interests. We did research. Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three partners. There was no need for pretending — I grew sincerely interested in learning something about them.
Finally the result of assignment came out. Mrs. B. gave us an A on that assignment. I don't recall what the newspaper's headline was or even the culture we wrote about, but I did learn something that week. I was given a chance to see other people in a new light. I was given the opportunity to see in myself a potential that inspired my actions in later years. I learned that who we are is more important than what we are or seem to be. After that semester ended, I always received a friendly hello from my group. And I was always happy to see them.
8. 答案:
Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it: someone cared about him! He couldn't believe his ears. He looked up at Miss White in wonder. From her eager eyes, he could feel the warmth and the real care. On the way back home, those words constantly echoed in his mind. When he got home, for the first time in his life, he didn't storm out of the room for the woods. He seated himself before the desk and placed his schoolbooks on it. Determined, he turned the first page open.
The following Monday, Miss White gave another test. Spreading the paper carefully on his desk, Steve hurried through the test and was the first to hand in his paper. Obviously puzzled, Miss White began to look it over. In shock, she glanced up at Steve, then down, then up. Suddenly, her face broke into a bright smile. "The smartest boy had just passed his first test!" she announced, proud and excited! At her words, Steve cracked a big smile, with his eyes sparkling with joy and gratitude. He knew that was all because of a teacher who cared about him
