You're Never Too Old to Learn
The student arrived early, sat front and center, and stood out in my classroom in more ways than one. I'd say that he had about 40 years on his classmates in my class at California State University Los Angeles. He eagerly jumped into class discussions, with his humor and wisdom of experience. And he was always respectful of the other students' viewpoints, as if each of them were a teacher. Jerry Valencia walked in with a smile—and he left with one too.
"These students gave me the confidence that I didn't need to feel bad about my age," Valencia says.
One day, I spotted Valencia on campus. He said he would have to stop taking classes that term and reapply for next year. By then, he hoped to have earned enough money from construction jobs and have his student-loan papers in order. But he said he was still coming to campus to attend events or see friends. He asked whether he could still sit in on my class.
Sure, I said. But he wouldn't get any credit.
No problem, he said.
Soon there he was again, back at his old desk, front and center, jumping into our discussions on how to find and tell stories in Los Angeles—a 63-year-old junior with as much energy and curiosity as any of the youngsters in class.
A lot of Valencia's classmates apparently knew he couldn't afford that term's tuition but was still doing the homework.
"Here he is, willingly taking a class for the joy of it and benefit of learning," says Jessica Espinosa, a 25-year-old junior. "You don't see that in our generation."
Valencia showed up and took the final exam too. Afterward, students were chatting, and I happened to hear Valencia say he wanted to stay in school until he earned a master's degree, and before that it had taken him 12 years to finish college.
Twelve years
I needed to hear more.

7. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
There is no school equal to a decent(体面的) home and no teacher equal to a virtuous parent.
There are two typical examples: Edison's mother and our mother. As you all know, Thomas Edison is one of the most outstanding scientists and inventors in the world. Unbelievably, young Tom was in school for only three months. It is said that he liked to ask strange questions, many of which have nothing to do with learning. His teacher didn't understand why he had so many strange questions. He didn't want to teach Tom any more. He asked Tom's mother to take the boy home. Tom's mother taught him to read and write, and she found him to be a very good pupil. He learned very fast and became very interested in science. It was she who played an important role in Edison's growth. Although we can't compare with Edison, our mother played a more important role in our growth than his mother. Our dad was an English teacher who taught high school students. For many years, he had been cautious and conscientious(认真的) towards work. Mom stayed home and homeschooled their four children. Three of us had no trouble in learning but my sister Catherine still could not read by fifth grade, and worse still, did not even know the alphabet(字母表).
My mother did some research and found that Catherine had some sort of learning disability. She sent Catherine to a public school to get some help. Catherine made many friends at school and amazed everyone with her gift for telling creative stories in class, but she still couldn't master reading skills. After all the testing was done, the school had my parents come in. They were told that based on the test results, they should just take Catherine home, which was very similar to Edison's experience. However, the biggest difference is that Edison was not stupid, and my sister really had learning disabilities.

8. 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
As is known, if we are united no one can defeat us. But if we constantly have conflicts or misunderstandings, we may attract outsiders to take advantage of us, which may ultimately result in our failure. Unity is the source of strength and people who are united have the capability to tackle any kind of situation as they share each other's burdens and hardships.
In olden days, man lived alone. They travelled and hunted all on their own, which sometimes gave opportunities to fierce animals to attack and kill them. Then someone realized that if he joined hands with other hunters, they would be able to face several common dangers and challenges. This is how villages got formed, which later developed into towns and cities.
On the sports ground, be it cricket, football, baseball, basketball or any kind of sport, a united team and an appropriate strategy may contribute to the success of the team, but if there is a conflict, unhealthy competition or unnecessary misunderstanding among the team members, they may invite(招致) the opponents to take advantage of their shortcomings and win the game. Likewise, if the members of a family stay together and support each other in every phase of life, no outsiders can harm the family.
There was once an old man who lived in a village with his three sons. The sons always fought with each other and would not pay any attention to their father. The man fell sick and assumed that he would die soon; he worried that once he died, people would take advantage of his sons' conflicts. He called all his sons and asked them to break a bundle of sticks, one by one. None of them could do it. He then untied the bundle and gave each stick to each one of them, asking them to break, which they could very easily accomplish. He then told his sons that they should stay like the bundle of sticks so that no one could break them, and that if they kept on fighting, they would be broken by the outsiders easily.

To show my love for my grandpa, I made a birthday cake with the help of my mother. In the evening, we got together to celebrate his birthday. With candles lit, we sang "Happy Birthday" out loud and clapped. After making a wish, he blew out the candles. The room was alive with the sound of cheering.

6. 答案:
Born into a poor big family, life was not easy for young Valencia. He was so poor that he often did not know where his next meal was coming from. But he has always been full of desire for learning. When he was thirteen, he began to work in construction. He didn't give up his dream of going to school. He went to school while making money. Although it was hard, learning brought him hope and strength. After unremitting efforts, he was finally admitted to the college. He felt excited and happy.
In the years that followed, Valencia struggled to finish college. He was in and out of school, he said, subject to his work schedule and whether he had money for classes. He had earned his associate of arts degree over the summer, then transferred to Cal State LA to start on his bachelor's. He believes that learning is the most important thing in life and age can't hinder your pace of learning. He always says it's never too old to learn.
7. 答案:
Tears of sadness ran down my dad's cheeks. However, my mom's jaw was set in quiet determination. As they walked back to the car, she turned to him and said, "I know she's not stupid. Soon after, my mom discovered a learning system that focused heavily on lesson repetition and building slowly on the previous exercises. She worked with Catherine for four hours every morning while the rest of us studied on our own. It was hard for both of them, but she often told crying Catherine, "Failure is not an option. You are going to learn to read, and we'll both try! You have to learn to read! You will learn to read."
In time, Catherine got it. By the time she graduated from eighth grade, she was reading almost at grade level. She continued improving and was reading above grade level when she graduated from high school. Catherine came to love reading and writing. She became a very famous writer. A number of wonderful novels were published all over the country. Many of her major works were popular with the public and some books were translated into other languages. All of this was because of a wonderfully devoted mother who was absolutely the best teacher ever—for all four of us.
8. 答案:
It is well known that united we stand and divided we fall. In ancient times, hunters made joint efforts to cope with dangers and challenges, thus forming villages. Surely, unity has a great significance in people's lives whether on the sports ground or in a family. The dying man's story of sticks also shows the importance of unity.
