Middle School Laboratory Safety Rules
Science is about discovering and exploring (探索) the natural world. Explorations can occur in the classroom, laboratory or field. As part of your science lessons, you will take part in many activities using many different materials, equipment and chemicals, which can be dangerous if not used correctly. As a result, you may be faced with biological chemical or physical hazards.
Safety is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing. The following safety rules have been developed for the protection and safety of everyone.
★Behave yourself in a responsible way at all times. Risky behavior such as throwing things and doing experiments without teachers' instructions is not allowed.
★Eating, drinking, chewing gum, wearing make-up, touching contact lenses (隐形眼镜) or other unsafe activities are not allowed.
★Do not enter or work in the laboratory unless an instructor is present.
★Never enter areas where chemicals are kept.
★Taking any chemicals or equipment away from the classroom or laboratory is not allowed.
The safety rules must be followed at all times. Review these rules with your teacher and parents, then sign and get the signature (签名) of a parent. The signature shows that you understand the lab can be dangerous, and that you have read the rules and agree to follow them at all times. Signatures are needed before you can go on with any lab or science classroom activity.

“I have cancer.” Mom said and held me in a tight hug.I could feel her chest shaking as she tried not to cry but failed.
For all of my twenty-four years,my mom had been supportive.Strength and protection had always flowed from her to me.Now_I_knew_it_would_have_to_flow_the_other_way.
Mom didn't stay down for long. After the shock of breast-cancer,she armed herself with a notebook and a pen and a thousand questions for the doctors. She took notes on white blood cell counts and medications (药物) with long names as though she were studying for entrance exams into medical school.“The not-knowing is the worst.” she said.
The operation was successful. The chemo (化疗) was the harder part.I went with Mom to every chemo treatment. She rarely complained, though her hair was gone and her toenails and fingernails fell out one by one.She joked that she could save money on nail polish and put it toward the doctor bills, even though she never wore nail polish.“Cancer can take my hair,my nails,my health,my very life. But it can't take my smile.” Mom said.
Mom learned to share her fears with me,and it formed an even deeper bond between us.Yet I am certain there were fears she didn't share because she was still protecting me — worries she only shared with Dad.Even in the darkest hours, she would just joke about the cancer.Mom always said,“When you look your greatest fear in the eye and laugh at it,you take away some of its power.”
Mom was one of the lucky ones. She did beat her cancer, though not without scars. From her,I've learned I may not get to choose what I face, but I do get to choose how I face it.

Widespread descriptions of animals in pop culture could actually be hurting the animals' survival chances in the wild, new research suggests.
Franck Courchamp of the University of Paris-Sud was interested in the idea of “appeal” in animals. He wanted to know: What species do people consider appealing And what are the influences of being appealing on populations in the wild
In a research published this month, Courchamp and other researchers list the top 20 appealing species. Most of the animals identified as appealing are large mammals living on ing in first place were tigers, followed by lions, elephants, giraffes, panthers, pandas, cheetahs, polar bears, wolves, and gorillas. However, at least half of the interviewees didn't realize that five of the top ten most appealing species are threatened.It_is_paradoxical_that_we_haven't_been_able_to_protect_the_species_we_care_about_the_most.
The study also found that we are flooded with images of these creatures, even as they are becoming fewer in the wild. The study suggests that too much of imagination might be creating a “virtual (虚拟的) population” of the animals in peoples' minds, making them believe there are far more individuals in the wild than is exact.
The study authors suggest that companies who benefit from the use of these images should set aside a small percentage of their profits for protection efforts and informational campaigns.“That would be not only something fair, but that would be something that could bring a win-win situation for them,” Courchamp says.It could bring them positive public relation, for example.Besides, if a company's mascot (吉祥物) goes extinct, that could hurt them from a marketing point, Courchamp says. But not enough companies are “truly concerned about the protection of the species that they work on,” he adds.

Israeli researchers say they have invented a reusable face mask that can kill the coronavirus with heat by drawing power from a mobile phone charger.
The disinfecting (消毒) process takes about half an hour and users should not wear the mask while it is plugged in, said Professor Yair Ein-Eli, who led the research team at Technion University in Haifa.TI new mask has a USB port that connects to a power source such as a standard cellphone charger that heats an inner layer of carbon fibres to 70 degrees Celsius, high enough to kill viruses.
Ein-Eli said disposable masks, in high demand globally during the health crisis, were not economically or environmentally friendly.“This is our solution,” he said.
Professor Allon Moses, an infectious diseases expert at Jerusalem's Hadassah Medical Center, said there was “no question” that a half hour's exposure to 70-degree heat would kill the coronavirus. But he cautioned that repeated heating could “damage the masks paper or fabric and spoil its ability to protect from diseases in the future.”
During testing, the prototype was exposed to 20 heating cycles, each for half an hour, with no damage on durability, Ein-Eli said.“We can guarantee it up to a few dozen cycles, without any risk,” he added.
The prototype looks like a standard N95 face mask, with a valve (阀) at the front and bands to hold it in place around the head. The researchers submitted a patent for the mask in the United States in late March and say they are discussing commercializing the product with the private sector. It will likely sell at a $ 1 premium over the price of a typical disposable face mask, the researchers say.

A.The reusable face masks were unhealthy.
B.70-degree heat would hurt people in a way.
C.The cost of reusable face masks may be high.

15.What is the meaning of the underlined word “premium” in the last paragraph
A.Fine. B.Extra.
C.Currency. D.Face value.
解析:选B 词义猜测题。根据划线词后部分“over the price of a typical disposable face mask”可知,这种口罩应该比一次性的多付出费用。因此,premium应是“额外”的意思。故选B。

The Science Festival is scheduled to take place on the playground from 8 am to 11 am, lasting three hours. Its purpose is to encourage us students to think creatively as well as share our works with others. At this festival, you can enjoy various gadgets which are of great use in our daily life. What's more, some excellent student inventors will introduce the functions of their technology gadgets and perform them on the spot, which I think will be the most exciting part.
Looking forward to your reply and your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua

I was born and grew up in a small seaside town.In my childhood, I often played on the beach with my elder sister, chasing (追逐) the waves and enjoying the seaside scenery.
One sunny summer afternoon, my sister and I were playing on a big rock quite a distance from the beach. We were so happy that we didn't notice the water rising. When we decided to go back, we were shocked to find that the rock had almost been covered by water and there was no way back to the shore.Meanwhile, the wind blew harder and harder. We got into a panic, waving and shouting crazily towards the shore.Suddenly, I slipped (滑) and fell into the sea.My sister stretched out her hand to catch hold of me.However, she could not stay still, and slid off the rock into the sea, too.
“Help! Help!” We cried.I could feel my body tingling (酸麻) as I tried to breathe for air.I attempted to swim back to the rock, but the water was too deep and the waves were too strong. What made things worse was that the rough water made it almost impossible for anyone to hear our cries.Tears mixed with the water as I struggled in the sea.My sister, although using all her strength, wasn't able to pull me in.Instead, she was being pushed apart from me by the big waves. The two of us, scared to death, kept crying.

Paragraph 1:
Luckily, two boys playing on the beach happened to see us.They quickly found a stick nearby and approached us cautiously, hand in hand. They tried to pull us ashore with the stick. But the stick was too short for us to reach.Worse still, the wind was getting so strong that the two boys were rocked from side to side, unable to stand steadily.Eventually, they had no choice but to go back to the shore to look for other people to help us.
Paragraph 2:
Fortunately, the two boys managed to find a lifeguard.Having learned what was happening, the lifeguard rushed fearlessly against the strong wind and huge waves.Such an experienced swimmer was he that he reached us in no time.He grabbed my arm and quickly carried me to the shore, where he left me taken care of by the two boys. Then, without delay, he returned to save my sister. We were so blessed to be alive and heartily thankful to that courageous lifeguard and the two boys who had saved our lives!UNIT 3 单元验收评价(一)——单元语基温故

8.It can be inferred that the widespread images of animals in pop culture ________.
A.leads people to forget the less appealing animals
B.makes a false impression of the animals' real situation
C.raises people's wildlife protection attention and efforts
D.brings a win-win situation for both animals and companies
9.What does the writer mean by saying the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3
A.It is important to protect these endangered species.
B.It is natural to regard the large mammals as attractive.
C.It is terrible that the species are dying out at an alarming speed.
D.It is strange that people's thoughts contrast with their behaviors.
10.Courchamp lists the companies' responsibilities and their advantages by ________.
A.giving examples B.making definition
C.making comparisons D.using numbers
11.What's Courchamp's attitude to the companies benefiting from animal images
A.Neutral. B.Supportive.
C.Dissatisfied. D.Positive.

12.How long does the disinfecting process usually take
A.Around 20 minutes.
B.Around 30 minutes.
C.Around 60 minutes.
D.Around 70 minutes.
13.Why do Israeli researchers invent a new face mask
A.To kill viruses thoroughly.
B.To spread a novel idea.
C.To replace the traditional ones.
D.To make reusable and friendly ones.
14.What was Allon Moses' concern according to the passage
A.The reusable face masks were unhealthy.
B.70-degree heat would hurt people in a way.
C.The cost of reusable face masks may be high.
D.The function of mask to prevent diseases was ruined.
15.What is the meaning of the underlined word “premium” in the last paragraph
A.Fine. B.Extra.
C.Currency. D.Face value.
