Aesha Ash is a ballet dancer who began The Swan Dreams Project in 2011. It is a program designed to bring ballet to girls of color in her community. Aesha Ash is one of the few women of color to ever grace the stages of the School of American Ballet in New York City. She wants to expose her community to more positive images of women of color through the use of ballet. She wants to show the world that beauty and grace are not defined by status or race.
Aesha grew up in the inner city of Rochester, New York, where crime, gun violence and poverty were among the biggest threats to the community. For her, that’s normal. That’s just life in the neighborhood, but what she remembers most is the dance studio She started dancing at the age of five. A teacher mentioned to her mother that she had some promise in ballet, and that it would be difficult for her, as a woman of color, to enter the ballet world. But the hardship she faced was the very thing that pushed her to pursue a career in ballet.
And there’s so much negative stereotypes (刻板印象) and misunderstanding of who they are in the media. Through the use of imagery and her career as a ballet dancer, she challenges stereotypes that exist for women of color, particularly those from inner-city communities.
“It’s important that our girls see that side of themselves because for many kids it’s hard to be what you can’t see. I hadn’t seen a black ballet dancer before I decided that was what I wanted to be. It was really important for me to be in my environment displaying that because this is where I’m from. It was always beyond ballet,” Aesha Ash stated.
24. Why did Aesha start The Swan Dreams Project
A. To promote the images of females of color by ballet.
B. To expose her community to a world of women of color.
C. To grace the stages of the School of American Ballet.
D. To show the world that beauty and grace are defined by status.
25. Which of the following best describes the community she grew up in
A. Comfortable. B. Ancient. C. Peaceful. D. Unsafe.
26. What can’t we know from the passage
A. Aesha had a gift for ballet according to her teacher.
B. The hardship Aesha faced was the color of her skin.
C. Acsha wanted to be a ballet dancer because of a woman dancer of color.
D. It is not easy to change the stereotypes that exist for women of color.
27. What is the main idea of the text
A. A teacher provides chances for girls of color. B. A woman brings ballet to the girls of color.
C. Ballet changes the life of a woman of color. D. A woman has changed the negative stereotypes.

Humans’ ever spreading presence around the globe influences patterns of biological evolution in ways that we are just beginning to explore. On the Galápagos Islands, a body of evidence shows that the effect of our presence is increasing.
Luis F. De Leon from the University of Massachusetts Boston, together with other 6 scientists spent two years observing Darwin’s finches (雀科小鸟) to evaluate our effects on their behavior. They started by conducting feeding observations on coexisting finch species at sites that ranged from non-urban areas to urban areas. They also employed finch-human interaction experiments to test whether and how finches respond to human presence. To measure whether finch feeding preferences varied with the degree of urbanization, “cafeteria” experiments were carried out—finches were presented with a selection of human and native food items.
The scientists found that Darwin’s finches fed almost on human foods like rice and cookies or introduced garden species at urban locations. In contrast, at non-urban sites, finches fed mainly on native plant species and insects. Interaction tests suggest that urban birds get more accustomed to the presence of humans. Finally, at all sites of regular human presence, finches preferred human foods to natural foods.
The researchers warn that exploiting urban environments might present challenges for organisms (有机体), including shorter lifespans brought by the consumption of highly processed foods. Furthermore, the year-round availability of abundant human foods in urban environments might affect ecological and evolutionary processes that promoted species diversity. While the results clearly show a shift to human foods at urban sites, the adaptive significance of that shift is still an open question.
These findings also suggest that human behavior is the main driver of finch preference for human foods. The researchers propose a possibility that the effect of human behavior is facilitated by our tendency to feed birds, directly or inadvertently via food dropping or littering.
28. How did the scientists carry out the study
A. By carrying out experiments in labs. B. By training finches and observing results
C. By observing finches in different sites. D. By analyzing findings from previous experiments.
29. Which is probably finches” favorite food at non-urban sites frequently visited by humans
A. Rice. B. An insect.
C. The leaves of a native plant. D. The seed of an introduced plant.
30. What can we learn from the findings
A. All finches observed are willing to approach humans.
B. Human food availability might lead to biodiversity loss.
C. The reason for the shift of finch diets remains unknown.
D. The more processed foods finches consume, the longer they live.
31. What does the underlined word in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Illegally. B. Voluntarily. C. Deliberately. D. Unintentionally.

Is there a single word that motivates us more than “weekend” It’s like the promise of a sweet holiday following what seems like long-time exhaustion. It’s the spring in our step that gets bouncier (快活的) with each passing day-until by Friday, we’re practically bumping our heads against the ceiling.
The trouble is that the weekend is cheating us. You think you’re getting 48 hours of unconditional downtime, but reality takes a discount. In fact, it takes most of Sunday. That’s when anxiety comes and another countdown begins: 12 hours until Monday. Sure, the weekend is free time. But the mounting stress of an incoming Monday can ease any joy you might get from a Sunday evening.
That feeling is so common among the Monday-to-Friday crowd that there’s even more than one name for it: the Sunday Scaries, or Sunday Fear Syndrome (综合征). Going from a countdown to the weekend to a countdown to Monday can be difficult. Even a website that specializes in encouraging humans to accepting the Monday-to-Friday cycle admits it’s a problem.
For most people, Sunday is no holiday at all. It may all come down to the same problem: We can’t stop thinking about tomorrow. Even worse, we may develop some downright unhealthy coping strategies for that transition from weekends to Monday. Some might even staying up late, milking every minute of a fleeting (稍纵即逝的) Sunday in the form of mind-numbing distractions.
But why should Monday cast such a long and fearful shadow on our weekends Maybe it’s because the counter is reset and the weekend, or happiness, seems at furthest point. If, like most of us, you have a tolerable job, but don’t much like the whole idea of working, there are plenty of ways to make Mondays a little less stressful. Most importantly, don’t leave any unsettled Friday business hanging over the weekend. So, clear the decks and tie up loose ends.
32. What do we know about the weekend in paragraph 2
A. It is hard-earned. B. It doesn’t bring joy as expected.
C. It adds no happiness to people at all. D. It provides good time to relax.
33. Why does the writer mention in the text
A. To answer a question. B. To show its popularity.
C. To make a comparison. D. To support an idea.
34. What does the writer think of the way most people spend the weekend
A. Tolerable. B. Creative. C. Unwise. D. Practical.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Why People Are Stressed Out on Fridays B. Why the Joy of the Weekend is Stolen
C. Why a Countdown to the Weekend is Difficult D. Why Monday Casts a Fearful Shadow on Lives

When you create a social networking profile, a photo is almost always required. 36 One of the reasons is that it says much more about you than you might think, according to a study published in the journal Cyberpsychology Behavior, and Social Networking.
37 The factors that shape people’s ratings of our attractiveness based on profile photos are complicated—they don’t just take things at face value. So what really influences people when making oneself look good
Researchers studied 104 college students by showing them various photos of the same user on a social network. 38 One is social cues, which the study’s authors defined as personal and social information about the user that could be gathered from the photo. The other is congruence (一致性), which was measured in terms of the positivity of comments associated with each photo.
Photos with social cues that revealed more about the user were rated highly in terms of physical attractiveness. 39 What’s more, the researchers noted, the tone of the comments had more effect on attractiveness ratings than did social cues present in the photos. “When other people’s comments are incongruent with the self-presentation,” the authors wrote, “participants were less likely to perceive (察觉) the profile owner to be more popular than when there is congruence, regardless of the amount of social cues present in the profile.”
So your profile photos don’t necessarily have to be model-like. Photos that show your social relationships or hobbies are actually more important for your attractiveness. And if you want to build up a certain image, keep an eye on the comments being left on your social networking profiles. 40
A. They tested reactions to two factors.
B. Choosing the right photo is important.
C. A pretty photo may not be enough, the study shows.
D. That’s because people’s comments are most important for your popularity.
E. Therefore, attaching a wonderful photo can surely guarantee you a great job.
F. Many university students rely on computer software to make their profile photos shine.
G. Meanwhile, positive comments led viewers to regard users as more socially attractive.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I grew up in a small town where elementary school was a ten-minute walk from my house and in an age, not so long ago, when we children could go home for lunch and find our mothers waiting. At the time, I didn’t consider this to be so important, although today it certainly would be. Actually, our lunch time together in the past years had had a great influence on my life before I realized it.
Our lunch time when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had painstakingly practised my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained patiently that she needed a narrator (旁白) and had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to switch roles. Her words, kindly delivered, still hurt me, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) appearing unexpectedly through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with small amounts of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the bushes. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling a blossom up by all its roots, “From now on, we’ll have roses in this garden.” I immediately protested, “But I like dandelions. All flowers are beautiful— even dandelions.:
Paragraph 1:
“Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty ” asked my mother thoughtfully.
Paragraph 2:
“But you will be a beautiful narrator;” Mom said.

“Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty ” asked my mother thoughtfully. I nodded without hesitation, as if a second wasted could deprive the dandelions of their life. “The same to you,” she added, her voice soft, “Not everyone can be a rose, and it is also an honour to be a dandelion.” Knowing that my mother had realized my pain, I took off the mask that I had worn for the whole lunch time and poured out my unease heartily. She listened to me patiently and patted me on the back tenderly. Suddenly she stopped, as if to say something.
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” Mom said. She reminded me of how fluently I could deliver my part at home. It was at that time that I understood that maybe I was more suitable foe a role back stage like a narrator. From then on, I practiced my lines heart and soul with my mother at lunch time for weeks. And the performance approached ultimately. Standing backstage, nervousness came flooding in me. What encouraged me to overcome it was the inspiration from the beautiful yellow dandelions. The performance that night was eventually an big success. Hearing the thunderous applause, I took pride in my role and firmly believed that even a dandelion had its own beauty.
