While it was being built, about 3,000 people worked every day. The working 6 weren't very good — for example, it was often very hot inside.

During the two days of high-level talks between the US and China in Alaska this March, a beautiful Chinese interpreter ( 口译员) caught many people's eye all over the world. Her name is Zhang Jing. She won many people's hearts because she did a good job at the meeting.
Born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Zhang took interest in English at a very young age. She was determined (决心) to work for China's diplomacy (外交) in junior high school (初中) and then started her journey towards the dream. She worked really hard at school and was good at all subjects, especially at English. A teacher from her senior high school (高中) said that Zhang was able to go to top Chinese universities like Peking University and Tsinghua University, but she chose to keep running after her dream. In 2003, she went to China Foreign Affairs University. During the following four years there, she worked hard and improved her language skills greatly. After leaving university, she got a job in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and finally made her dream come true.
“Zhang made the world hear the voice of China. She also showed the power of Chinese women,” wrote someone on Sina Weibo.
Zhang's story also encouraged many students to study translation (翻译) and interpretation. “I also want to do something for our country's diplomacy. I dream of being a person like her and I will try my best to study for that,” said a junior high school student from Beijing.

In many ways, my interest in language learning began with my grandmother. She moved from Switzerland to England when she was young and I was always very surprised that she spoke English to me, Italian to my grandfather and French or German on the phone to her relatives (亲戚) and friends back home. I always imagined she could be a translator of books, or even a tour guide. What's more, she didn't learn English at school, but picked it up by herself when she came to England.
As for me, although I can speak a bit of Italian and German from listening to her, I only know a little grammar and sometimes get confused (困惑的), so it's hard for me to understand how someone can speak several languages so well. I'd love to know how my grandmother does it!
English has become an international language and more and more people in the world speak English. I hardly use other languages in my own job. But that doesn't mean I don't want to learn other languages. In my eyes, being able to ask for a meal in a restaurant on holiday in a non-English speaking country would be great. Most important of all, it would be nice to talk with people from around the world — it would be easier to make new friends if I spoke their language.
In fact, language learning is easier now than ever because of new technology ( 科技). For example, recording ( 录) your voice helps you see how well you're doing and helps you keep improving. There are apps to help you learn new words. However, I still think going to class improves conversation skills and helps you deal with (处理) mistakes quickly. So it's better to combine methods (结合各种方法).
Or you can just spend a little time talking to my grandmother!

B. take more international trips
C. learn more about food in other countries
D. communicate with people in other countries
( )14. The writer thinks new technology helps people _______.
A. study in different places
B. check their progress easily

Have you ever heard of the Great Trail The Great Trail is a footpath (人行小道) that goes from one side of Canada to the other. At about 27, 000km, it is the longest trail in the world. The Great Trail project began in 1992 and took 25 years to finish. It opened in 2017, 150 years after Canada became a country.
In fact, the Great Trail is lots of paths joined together. You can walk, ride a bike or a horse on most parts of the trail, but there are parts where the only way you can travel is by boat. And there are others where the trail is part of the highway (公路) — this doesn't sound very safe to me.
My father and I spent a day walking along part of the Great Trail that was surprisingly busy. We were told that it's uncommon to see bears when there are lots of people, but we saw one. It was moving through the trees, quite close to us, and I felt a little nervous. “I don't think it's hungry!” laughed my dad.
At lunchtime, we talked to an old man on the trail. Dad asked him if he thought the trail had helped Canadians learn more about their natural environment. “Not really,” he said. “We've always loved to be outdoors. But it brings us tourists from around the world, which is important.”
In the future, the trail will probably change, and new parts may open. We saw nothing to tell us where we were on the Great Trail. I know there's information on the website ( 网站), but it's good to know when you're walking on a special path. They need to add (增加) some signs, I think.
1. The Great Trail is the world's _______________ trail.
2. On most parts of the Great Trail, people can walk, _______________.
3. When the writer saw a bear, he felt _______________.

The Red Flag Canal ended the long drought history of Linzhou. It showed that nothing was impossible if people worked hard together.
You are welcome to visit the Red Flag Canal. I believe you will like it.
