Qomolangma, the tallest mountain in the world, is one of the greatest places on the earth. It reaches a height of 8, 848.86 metres. Millions of years ago, two parts of the earth's crust ( 地壳) hit each other. And over time, the pressure (压力) of the two parts caused the ground to rise above the sea. And that's how Qomolangma was born.
Although Qomolangma is beautiful to look at, the conditions on the mountain are very bad. The average (平均的) temperature is about -29℃. Even in July, the warmest month, the temperature only reaches -19℃. It never gets above 0℃, and as a result, the ice and snow at the top of the mountain is always there.
The conditions on Qomolangma make it hard for animals to live. One of the only animals that can live on the mountain is the wild yak (牦牛). This large animal can weigh 305 to 1,000 kilogrammes and grow to 1.6 to 2 metres tall. The yak is able to live there because its blood ( 血) can take in more oxygen ( 氧气) than the blood of other animals. That is very important because there is little oxygen in the air on Qomolangma.
Although the conditions on the mountain are hard — cold temperatures, strong winds, and changing weather, people from around the world kept on coming to Qomolangma, hoping to be the first to make it to the top. In 1953 Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first men to successfully climb the mountain. Since then, many climbers from all over the world have risked their lives to get to the top of Qomolangma.

Ever since I was a little child, I have always liked learning words and expressions in other languages. When I was nine, I started studying English at school, and I loved it. I learned a lot about English words and grammar at school, and, when I was sixteen, I went to a programme in Canada. I stayed there for one year, living with a Canadian family. It was one of the best experiences of my life. During my stay there, I started studying French, since it is also an official language (官方语言) in Canada. I studied hard, and it was worth (值得) it. French is a beautiful language.
After I came back to Brazil, I started studying Spanish. I think it is very important for Brazilians to learn this language because, here in South America, most countries' official language is Spanish. I loved learning this language and, thanks to that, now I have friends from Uruguay, Peru and Argentina. Keeping in touch with these friends is a great way to practise the language.
I am also learning Chinese and German. These languages are a little bit more difficult for me, but being able to say even a few expressions in these languages is rewarding (有益的).
Some people ask me why I spend so much time learning foreign languages. I always say there are a lot of advantages. For example, learning a foreign language improves your memory ( 记忆), introduces you to all kinds of information, helps you to communicate with people from different places and cultures and to make wonderful friends, provides you with insight ( 深入了解) into another way of thinking, makes you a more interesting person, and improves your chances of finding a good job.
