“How was your weekend ” “Did you see the game on TV last night ” “Isn't the weather beautiful today ” These questions and the answers to them are examples of “small talk” — the short, friendly conversations that people have with friends and partners (同伴).
Some people avoid making small talk at work. They think they shouldn't talk about things that aren't important for the job, or their partners will think they aren't serious about their work. And some people just don't enjoy making conversation about themselves.
But small talk is important! Knowing how to make small talk is a skill that can help you a lot. By making conversation, you show that you are friendly and interested in your partners. You become a better team member. If you don't make small talk, others might feel uncomfortable around you and think you're unfriendly. Peter Harper, a manager at the Apex Company in the US, says, “We always look for friendly workers who know how to communicate with each other and with our customers.”
Here are some tips (实用的提示) for successful small talk. You can talk about safe topics (话题) such as the weather, sports, hobbies, TV programmes, and famous people like movie stars, singers, etc. You can also share some information about your family such as birthday parties and other family events ( 重要事情), but don't share very personal information like family problems. You can talk about the news too. But avoid topics on money, age, weight and so on.
Listening is an important part of small talk. Listen carefully to what the other person is saying and ask questions. Don't just talk about yourself. And remember to smile! Making conversation takes practice. The more you do it, the better you'll be at making small talk!

A. Most customers like small talk.

Many of you must have celebrated Father's Day. But have you ever wondered when the holiday started
The idea for the holiday began in the 1900s in Washington, US. A young woman named Sonora Smart Dodd got the idea from a Mother's Day celebration in 1909. She missed her late (已故的) father very much and wanted to create a special day to honour (向……表示敬意) him. Sonora's father, William Jackson Smart, raised her and her five brothers all alone after their mother died. He could have had the children raised by different relatives (亲戚) but he chose to keep the family together. Sonora loved her father and she knew that he was special and great. She decided she wanted to show her thanks for his care and love.
Sonora first wanted to choose 5th June, 1910 as the first Father's Day because it was her father's birthday. But the local government put off the celebration until the 19th in order to allow enough time for the preparations. Then the holiday became popular and in 1972, the American government set the third Sunday of June as Father's Day and made it a national holiday.
Now in many countries people celebrate Father's Day on this day. Children often make cards and meals to show their love for their fathers. Popular gifts also include shirts, socks (短袜) and watches.
Father's Day is a good time to honour a good father. It is a family day for celebration. And it is a day when children both young and old can thank their fathers for the part they play in their lives.
