I live in central London. It's crowded. I see tons of people every day. The Uber driver. The office workers at rush hour. The cashiers at Sainsbury' s ... Deep in my thoughts, I encounter and interact with people mindlessly like a robot sometimes, without giving it much thought. It' s becoming rare for me to make spontaneous (自发的) friendships.
My mom was and still is the queen of spontaneous friendships. She is the kind of person who will talk to a cashier and know her life story, talk to a sales assistant and become her friend, and talk to a man sitting nearby, get his number and have me visiting his workplace to get advice on job hunting. These mindless chats have brought her many friends, and they have also solved many problems. I can't remember how many times she did her magic and pulled herself out of a bad situation. Sometimes I wish I could be more like her. But on reflection, it' s something I can practice and you can too.
For me to change, I had to make a habit of some sort. Here are the three affirmations (肯定) I tell myself every day to be more open to people.
We are all fellow humans. We are all in this world together so we might as well be friendly and make a connection with a fellow human.
Today is going to be a great day. Maybe I'll meet someone who will make my day. I might be saved by a stranger. I might even meet my future employer before even applying.
Opportunities are created by people. Whether it is a job or anything else, opportunities come from people talking to each other.
So next time you get your coffee, ride with a driver, wait in line or even sit in the underground, don't be afraid to interact with a stranger. It will affect their day; it will affect yours and you might get to that opportunity or solution that was lying in them, waiting to be found.
24. Why does the author say that he is like a robot
A. He has to work hard. B. He is as smart as a robot.
C. He has little time to enjoy his life. D. He seldom makes a connection with strangers.
25. What do we know about the author's mother
A. She has good people skills. B. She is fond of giving advice.
C. She has strong belief in magic. D. She is unaware of her privacy concerns.
26. What did the author think about what his mother did
A. It was helpful to her. B. It was none of her business.
C. It should be more spontaneous. D. It failed to solve any problems.
27. What does the author suggest
A. Staying away from strangers. B. Keeping in touch with your old friends.
C. Communicating with those you encounter. D. Avoiding sharing personal information with others.

The murals (壁画) are expected to fade within a year, but the city hopes a proposed (被提议的) street painting program will help participants build community and create a sense of place that will live on long after the paint wears away.
The program originated from a pilot project the City of Regina carried out in 2017 and 2018. The project saw members of the community gather to create a public artwork designed by the Neil Balkwill' s artist Brendan Schick at the crosswalk of 14th Avenue and Montague Street in October 2017.
But seven months - and one winter season - after the first mural was painted, it had faded to nothing. Norman Kyle, director of roadways and transportation for the City of Regina, said the use of a stain (着色剂) instead of a road paint, as well as road use, contributed to the mural' s quick demise. "We had a lot of calls and there were a lot of social media posts that were positive about the mural," said Kyle. "They wished it would have lasted longer but given the fact that it is on a road with traffic and sand, just like our road markings, we have to refresh them every year to make them visible."
Citizens will be able to send proposals outlining what kind of mural their group or organization would like to paint and where. City administration will then assess the proposals.
If approved, a flat permit fee of $400 will be required to cover the cost of traffic accommodations (设施) including barricades and parking restrictions needed during painting and after as the paint dries. The permit fee will also cover the cost of reviewing the applications. The applicants will also be required to cover the cost of the paint needed to complete the mural.
"In the pilot project we felt it was successful because there was high community involvement and participation," said Kyle. "It generated a lot of positive feedback from both the citizens and-the community." He said he hopes community groups will continue to get involved, and as they do that it will spread throughout the city.
28. What do we know about the pilot project
A. It began in 2018. B. It used a road paint.
C. It aimed to protect ancient murals. D. It involved participants in street painting.
29. What does the underlined word "demise" in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Disappearance. B. Completion. C. Stop. D. Hit.
30. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. How to paint murals. B. How to apply for a mural.
C. What influences murals have on communities. D. What costs applicants should cover to create the mural.
31. What did Kyle say about the pilot project
A. It has spread throughout the city. B. It failed to be carried out smoothly.
C. It helped create a sense of neighborhood. D. It caused a lot of trouble for city traffic.

Mogao Grottoes is located at the western end of the Hexi Corridor along the ancient Silk Road in Dunhuang, China. Until now, most mural paintings at Mogao Grottoes have been dated by directly referring to the mural texts or historical documents. However, some are still left with the creation era (年代) uncertain due to the lack of reference materials or the disagreement of art experts.
The drawing style of mural paintings was changing throughout history and can be learned and quantified through painting data. A new dating method has been developed by encoding (编码) the drawing styles using visual codes
learned through deep learning. This new method successfully discovered the creation era of six mural paintings at Mogao Grottoes. This new research work is led by Qingquan Li from Shenzhen University.
With the help of experts from Dunhuang Academy, seven mural paintings from two grottoes (No. 205 and No. 206) were chosen as subjects for this dating research.
To reveal the creation era of these paintings, Qin Zou, a researcher from Wuhan University, collected 3,860 mural paintings from 194 different grottoes with confirmed creation-era labels. To find the visual codes that can identify the era in these paintings, the authors constructed a deep convolutional neural network (卷积神经网络) and classified (将......分类) these painting images into the right eras. Based on the classification model, a dating method was built and applied to date the seven paintings.
Six of the new dating results were approved by experts from Dunhuang Academy. "These dating results are correct and the method is great," said Mr. Hui-Min Wang, a distinguished expert from the Archaeological Institute of Dunhuang Academy.
"To the best of our knowledge," wrote the researchers, "this work represents the first account of a scientific and quantitative manner to support the era prediction and reduce the uncertainties in dating ancient paintings by using deep learning."
32. In which way can most mural paintings be directly dated
A. By checking painting data. B. By identifying the drawing styles.
C. By referring to reference materials. D. By adopting a convolutional neural network.
33. What can be learned about the new dating method
A. It requires a large number of visual codes. B. It dated the seven chosen mural paintings correctly.
C. It was developed by experts in Dunhuang Academy. D. It involves collecting information from the mural texts.
34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The importance of creation-era labels. B. How the classification model is created.
C. The influence of the new dating research. D. Why the researchers chose 3,860 mural paintings.
35. What was Mr. Wang's attitude toward this new method
A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Positive. D. Uninterested.

Two months to save my girl’s life
As my feet pounded the pavement, sweat dripped down my forehead and back. “Just a little bit further,” I told myself, determined to push forward. Though I’d never been much of a runner, I had a crucial motivation to save my little girl, Bridie. Born in January 2017, she had beautiful big blue eyes. But shortly after her arrival, doctors pointed out that her head was measuring quite large. Within days, she was diagnosed with sagittal craniosynostosis. Doctors explained that she’d need surgery. They also noticed that her limbs and fingers were measuring quite short, so Bridie went through genetic testing to find out why. When the results came back, my wife and I met with the specialist. “Bridie has Mainzer-Saldino syndrome,” he said. He also revealed the rare condition would cause reinal (视网膜的) degeneration, meaning she could go blind and develop kidney (肾) disease.
So, when Bridie fell ill in 2019 with common flu, it caused a loss to her little body. Sadly, the medications she needed to help her recover weakened her kidneys even further. By December that year, her specialist revealed they were only functioning at 30 percent. “If it gets any worse, she will need to start dialysis (透析),” he admitted, adding that a transplant might be required sooner than we first thought.
It broke my heart, and I knew I had to step up to help save my girl. So I volunteered to give her one of my kidneys right away. After undergoing multiple tests, I was declared a match. But there were still several barriers I had to overcome before I had the all-clear to donate.
“You’ll have to lose 15 kilos before we consider you fit to transplant,” the specialist told me in June. He gave me two months to get into shape. At 96.5 kilos, I wasn’t overweight, but I needed to lower my BMI to be fit for the surgery.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I was determined to do whatever it took to save my little girl.

41. A。由文章首段中的experience something very special及本句中的a night spent in a transparent dome ... in the bush of Thailand's Golden Triangle可知,这个夜晚“非同寻常(unusual)”。
42. C。下文中的visit the conservation area of the Golden Triangle to get closer to the elephants here 及I take picture after picture of the elephants standing nearby提示透明的穹状建筑物距离生活在丛林深处的亚洲象“只(just)”有几英尺。
43. D。 You are about to experience something very special提示本空选experience。
When I discovered the Jungle Bubbles可知,此处表示“我”便抓住与这些大象共度一夜的机会。
I take picture after picture of the elephants standing nearby
49. A。下文中的No phone, no news 及I watch as the three elephants that will be ... tonight play in a mud hole提示“我”唯一需要做的事情就是看大象,故选watch。
51. D。由本句中的blowing hard to clear the mud out of their noses可知,天黑时,大象们终于从泥坑里出来了。leave(离开)符合语境。
56. or。 此处用到了whether ... or ...
57. be exposed。
58. to solve。
59. which。
60. conventional。
61. neatly。
62. guarantees / will guarantee。
63. in。
64. carrying。
65. performance。
Dear Sir or Madam,
It is said that the World Culture and Art Exhibition will be held in our city next month. I am writing to apply to be a volunteer.
As for me, I am good at communicating with others. Having read many books on culture and art, I am familiar with Chinese culture and art, which means I can deal with some specific problems properly. What’s more, I can speak English fluently.
If lucky enough to get this opportunity, I will do my due diligence to promote Chinese culture and art.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
I was determined to do whatever it took to save my little girl. I cut back on beer and pub meals, such as fried chicken and chips, and stuck to eating healthier options, such as lean meat and vegetables instead. I also invested in a new pair of joggers and went running every day. Incredibly, by August, I had managed to lose weight and was given the all-clear to go ahead.
In November, the big day finally arrived. Wheeled into operating theatre around 8 am, my nerves were very tense. When I came to several hours later, my wife was there by my side, smiling. Thankfully, Bridie’s surgery was also believed to be a success. After two days, I was finally well enough to visit my precious daughter. I felt so good to see a smile on her face. Our brave girl had more energy with each day that passed. Seeing the smile on our beautiful Bridie’s face makes it all worthwhile.
