Sometimes there's nothing better than the "rush" you feel when you're going at high speeds. Or the wonder of going somewhere new and different, climbing a mountain or enjoying extreme sports like snowboarding or parachuting. These are the adventures we "thrill seekers" live for. But sometimes we also need to know when to slow down.
Recently, I went quad biking(越野摩托车)-or ATV driving-on a dirt track in the mountains outside of Beijing. After a brief instructional exercise and what seemed like lots of waiting, we put on our helmets, sped up our engines and got onto the track. The sound of the engine roaring was thrilling. As I got more confident, I couldn't help overtaking other drivers whenever I got the chance. Finally, the way forward opened up and I sped ahead of the others. I turned toward a small hill and raced down. As I soon found out, this was a big mistake. My ATV turned over at full speed.
Luckily, I knew it was happening and pushed myself out of the way of the falling ATV. Had I not, I probably would have broken my leg beneath the weight of the ATV or even lost it. I might have even broken my neck. It ended up turning out fine, apart from some pain in my chest for a week or so. This was a pleasant surprise for my friend. After seeing the accident, he said to me, "Dude, I thought you were dead." Perhaps I could have very well died, if I hadn't been lucky that day.
That event was one I'll always remember for the adventure and the near-death experience. It's good to be adventurous, but it's still really important to be wise and careful too. So, go on adventures- but be smart while you're on them!
24. What did the author do before starting his quad biking adventure
A. He checked the engine of his ATV repeatedly. B. He shared his experience with other drivers.
C. He received some guidance and waited. D. He made a personal survey of the track.
25. What does the underlined word "overtaking" in paragraph 2 most likely mean
A. Following. B. Directing. C. Going past. D. Talking with.
26. What happened when the author tried to race down a small hill
A. He hit his friend's ATV. B. He slowed down gradually.
C. He broke his neck and leg. D. He lost control of his ATV.
27. What's the main message the author wants to convey in the text
A. Accidents are a natural part of adventures.
B. It is fun to live an adventurous life.
C. Never be afraid of pushing our limits in life.
D. We should keep safety in mind while on an adventure.

Microplastic pollution is increasing greatly around the globe, according to a study of airborne(空气传播的)plastic particles(粒子).
People are already known to breathe, drink and eat microplastics, and research suggests that pollution levels will continue to rise rapidly. The researchers said that taking in these particles can stimulate lung tissue and lead to serious diseases.
Professor Natalie Mahowald, at Cornell University in the US and part of the research team, said, "But maybe we could solve this before it becomes a huge problem, if we manage our plastics better, before they accumulate in the environment."
The research, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, examined airborne microplastics, which have been far less studied than plastic in oceans and rivers.
The team gathered more than 300 samples of airborne microplastics from 11 sites across the western US. These were the basis for atmospheric modeling that estimated the contribution from different sources, and was the first such study to do so.
They found that roads were the main factor in the western US, linked to about 85 percent of the microplastics in the air. These are likely to include particles from tires on vehicles, and plastics from litter that had been broken down.
The researchers enlarged their modeling work to a global level. It suggested that while roads are also likely to be the main driver of airborne plastics in Europe, South America and Australia, plastic particles blown up from fields may be a much bigger factor in Africa and Asia.
Professor Andreas Stohl of the University of Vienna's Faculty of Earth Sciences, and not part of the study team, said, "The study confirms the global-scale nature of microplastic transport in the atmosphere and does a good job in highlighting highly relevant possibilities, but more measurement data is needed to get a better idea of the sources."
28. What do we know about microplastic pollution from the text
A. It has become the most pressing environmental problem.
B. The particles can harm our lungs.
C. Airborne microplastics have been widely studied.
D. There is more plastic in the air than in oceans.
29. What did the researchers find out about airborne plastic pollution
A. Its impact changes on different continents.
B. Public transportation is responsible for it.
C. Its main driver differs across continents.
D. Africa is suffering the most from the pollution.
30. What is the next step of the study, according to Professor Andreas Stohl
A. To figure out the possible damages of microplastics
B. To understand the nature of airborne plastic pollution globally.
C. To get more data to understand the sources of microplastics.
D. To improve the method of collecting samples of microplastics.
31. What could be the best title for the text
A. Effects of microplastics on human health B. Plastic pollution rising rapidly in the air
C. Possible solutions to plastic pollution D. Plastic pollution on the global scale
D
The ability to use tools is rare in the animal world. Recently, cockatoos(凤头鹦鹉)have been proven capable of more than just using tools.
According to a paper published in Current Biology in February, 2023, scientists designed various tasks for a group of cockatoos. The first task was getting a nut out of a puzzle box, requiring two tools: first a short, sharp tool used to cut the membrane(薄膜), then a long stick to get the nut out of a hole. Five out of 10 cockatoos were able to reach the nut. In the following tasks, the cockatoos were observed picking up tools before doing the task, showing their ability to plan ahead. Researchers also noticed that each cockatoo had a different way of carrying and using the tools.
Using a set of tools means that the animal can "solve problems through flexibly applying some insight of a given situation," Mark Briffa at the University of Plymouth, UK, told CNN.
The great intelligence of cockatoos makes them popular pets-they can mimic(模仿)sounds and dance to music. However, these smart birds may suffer from mental health issues as mon signs of stress and anxiety include biting and feather picking, according to the PetMD website. Biting is often regarded as a form of attack, but sometimes cockatoos bite others due to stress and fear. Feather picking can be a more serious sign that the cockatoo is unhappy. In extreme conditions, a cockatoo may pluck(拔)out all of its feathers.
Some other pets show similar troubling behaviors too. For example, according to Discover magazine, pet dogs may chew their nails or lick their bodies so much that they form ulcers(溃疡). Pets desire attention, joy and excitement. As scientists learn more about animal intelligence, we should keep in mind that they may suffer from psychological illnesses just like we do.
32. What was the first task designed to test the cockatoos' ability to use tools
A. Picking up a nut using a long stick.
B. Breaking open a nut with a sharp tool.
C. Cutting a hole in a puzzle box and reaching a nut inside.
D. Carrying a set of tools to a specific location.
33. What did scientists discover about the cockatoos from their studies
A. Most of them managed to reach the nut. B. They used the tools in different ways.
C. They were unable to plan ahead. D. They couldn't use a set of tools.
34. What is a sign of stress and anxiety in cockatoos, according to the article
A. Developing ulcers. B. Mimicking sounds.
C. Quickly flapping their wings. D. Plucking and picking at their feathers.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Cockatoos' intelligence comes at a price B. Cockatoos keep their tools safe
C. Cockatoos are much smarter than we think D. What makes cockatoos a popular pet

When it comes to cacti(仙人掌), we usually think of them living in very dry environments like deserts. However, the plant can now be seen in some Alpine regions of Switzerland and Italy - mountain areas 56 used to be covered by snow.
"In some parts of Valais, we estimate that the cacti can take 57 one-third of the surface," Yann Triponez, a biologist working in Valais, Switzerland said. Although the plant 58 (be)present in the local area since the late 18th century, recent 59 (discover)showed that cacti are growing faster than usual. "When you have these cacti, nothing else grows," Triponez said, stating that the plant 60 (cover)the soil and prevents other plants from taking root.
A warmer climate in Alpine areas can be seen 61 a reason for the change. The warming climate has been reducing snow coverage in the area, 62 (give)more soil for the cacti to grow on. It also leads to 63 (long)time periods for the plant to grow. Botanist(植物学家)Peter Oliver Baumgartner told The Guardian that 64 people may have the impression that cacti prefer hot climates, they can live in temperatures as low as-15C. Baumgartner also called on more attention 65 (pay)to local biodiversity since Valais has about two-thirds of the total plant species in Switzerland.

Mateo, a seven-year-old boy, was very interested after seeing the wooden box on the sidewalk. The sign on the front said "Little Free Library". Luisa, Mateo's older sister, told him that people build boxes and put books inside so other people can take books they want and add ones they've already read.
The idea excited Mateo and he decided to make his own so kids could trade books. But Luisa was worried that kids may not notice it. Mateo wanted to have a try anyway, and he asked Luisa to help him. Luisa agreed and went to Papa for tools, while Mateo ran inside to collect books.
With Papa's help, they built a wooden box. They put a door on it and attached the box to a post. Then they dug a hole in their front yard and stuck(插)the post into the hole. Mateo arranged the books inside the box and closed the door. "Now I just have to wait," he said.
Mateo ran outside three times that day to check. But each time, his books were the only ones inside. For the next few days, Mateo kept checking the box, but his books were still there.
"No kids noticed it, and no one wants to trade books," Mateo said in low spirits, kicking at the pebbles(鹅卵石)in the path.
"I know you really wanted your idea to work, Mateo," Luisa comforted
him. "I'm sorry it didn't."
The next two days, Mateo didn't check the box. Luisa went to his room to encourage him to take a look in case someone decided to trade, but Mateo refused. Reading his frustration, Luisa let out a sigh and walked out of the room.
Paragraph 1:
The next morning, Luisa asked Mateo to check the box again. ________________________________________

Dear Mike,
I can't wait to share a piece of good news with you. A Chinese folk culture theme park has just been built in my hometown. I think this is a great chance for you to learn more about Chinese culture, so I'd like to invite you to visit the park with me.
We can meet at the bus station at 8 next Saturday morning and then set off for there. During the visit, we will learn about Chinese folk culture and experience various forms of folk art, through which we can see Chinese history changes and great society development, especially Chinese countryside. When we visit it, we had better behave well and follow the related rules and order. Don't smoke, make noises or throw rubbish anywhere. I am sure you can harvest and benefit from this visit.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
范文:
Paragraph 1:
The next morning, Luisa asked Mateo to check the box again. She pulled Mateo out of bed, advising him to go to the box. Mateo dragged himself from upstairs and walked to the box. Hopeless and frustrated, he unwillingly and slowly opened the door. Mateo couldn't believe his eyes. In the box lay lots of new books while his books were gone. The happy boy jumped up and down, clapped his hands and shouted, "it worked! My little library worked!" "But how did it work " Mateo wondered, deciding to figure out who had helped him.
Paragraph 2:
Finally, his chance come when Mateo saw his next-door neighbor Julianne walking up to the box with two books. Mateo asked Julianne how she had heard about the library. It turned out that his sister Luisa had visited all the older kids in the neighborhood and asked them to tell their younger sisters and brothers about the little library. Julianne's answer moved Mateo to tears. As Mateo looked back, his eyes were greeted with a big smile from Luisa, who stood by the front door watching him. "I'm so lucky to have new books to read and even luckier to have a great sister!"
