Dear Tom,
I'm glad to hear that you are considering making up with Peter. If I were you, I would choose a bike as a birthday present for him.
As far as I know, Peter is always in poor health, so he can take more exercise by riding a bike to build up his body. In the meanwhile, you can often go outing by bike together, which is helpful to rebuild your friendship. Besides, taking a bike is an environmentally friendly means of transport. It's convenient for him to get around as well. Apart from giving him a gift, you can also adopt other means such as travelling, seeing a movie, having dinner and going shopping. No matter what you do, being sincere is the most important. I really hope that you can be good friends forever.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua

Ren and Sadie finished gym class and walked home together. Sadie said to Ren gently and sincerely, "As your friend, I hope you can tell me why you are afraid of water." Hesitating for a second, he shared his experience that he was once narrowly drowned in the river. "Let's face and overcome it together." Sadie said firmly. From then on, Sadie tried all means to help Ren. Gradually Ren overcame his fear and he swam freely in the pool. Sadie even encouraged him to take part in the coming swimming race. When that day came, Ren stepped on the diving board and he kept calm and confident.
The gym teacher blew the whistle and this time Ren dived bravely. He swam to the other side . The gym teacher walked to the other side of the gym and said, "Incredible, Ren!" The gym teacher helped him out of the water, shaking his hand excitedly and cheerfully. "Congratulations, you pass!" Ren held his fist tight and waved to Sadie gratefully with tears in eyes. Sometimes, it is the encouragement and support from your loved ones that help you step out of your comfort zone and overcome yourself, to develop the potential to the fullest.富锦市名校2022-2023学年高一下学期期末考试

My 16-year-old son, Anton, had gone to the local swimming pool. Most of the kids swim there, and there are plenty of rocks for them to use as safe harbours, so I had no fears for his safety.
Still, the firefighter's first words "You need to come up here to the Stillwater River" made me catch my breath, and his follow-up words gave me relief: "Your son is OK."
When I got to the river, I immediately saw the fire truck, ambulance and Anton, wrapped with a towel about his shoulders, sitting quietly on a low platform of the fire engine.
I hurried over to him. "Are you OK " I asked.
"Yeah," was all he said. But my eyes begged for an explanation. I didn't get it from my son, however, who tends to play his cards close to his vest.
The story was this: A woman was being swept under water. Hearing the cries, Anton and his friend Tyler, without hesitation, swam out to her, and brought her safely to shore.
In an age in which the word "hero" is broadcast with abandon and seemingly applied to anyone who make it through the day, I realised the real thing in my son. The teens are stubborn and self-centred, but that didn't mean they have no desire to do good.
Still shocked by my son's daring, I drove him home. Along the way, I tried to dig out some more information from him — but he had precious little to say. The only words he said were "What's for supper "
I spent some time alone that evening, thinking about the tragedy that might have been. The next morning, when Anton got up, I half wanted him to tell me the story. But all he did was toast some bread, pull himself together, and head for the door to start a new day. Watching from the window, I was reminded that "Still water often runs deep."
24. Why did the mother allow her son to swim there
A. He was an excellent swimmer. B. The water of the river is shallow.
C. He was old enough to swim. D. The rocks can be of help if there's danger.
25. The underlined part "who tends to play his cards close to his vest" probably means _________.
A. Anton is a boy fond of swimming with other kids
B. Anton is unwilling to tell others what he thinks
C. Anton always has a desire to help others
D. Anton seldom changes his mind
26.In the mother's eyes, what her son did was _________.
A. dangerous but interesting B. meaningful but difficult
C. unexpected and courageous D. awful and absurd
27.What might be the best title for the passage
A. My Son, My Hero B. Anton, A Silent Boy
C.A Good Deed D.A Proud Mother

Sport is not only physically challenging, but can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create too much anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.
The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents' and coaches' criticisms to heart and find faults in themselves.
Coaches and parents should also pay attention that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today's youth sport setting young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game, many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find faults with youngsters' performances. Positive support should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive support motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.
28. An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is __________.
A. to make sport less competitive B. to increase their sense of success
C. to reduce their mental stress D. to make sport more challenging
29.According to the passage, sport is positive for young people in that ________.
A. it can help them learn more about society
B. it enables them to find faults in themselves
C. it can provide them with valuable experiences
D. it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves
30.Many coaches and parents are in the habit of criticizing young athletes _________.
A. believing that criticism does good to their early development
B. without realizing criticism may destroy their self-confidence
C. in order to make them remember life's lessons
D. so as to put more pressure on them
31.According to the passage parents and coaches should ________.
A. pay more attention to letting children enjoy sport
B. help children to win every game
C. train children to cope with stress
D. enable children to understand the positive aspect of sport
(D)
Most people know something about the greenhouse effect. Factories send gases such as carbon dioxide, or CO2, into the atmosphere, the air around the earth. In the past, this wasn't a problem because trees absorbed the CO2. But now people in many countries are cutting down billions of trees all around the world. At the same time. factories are sending more CO2 into the atmosphere. It's difficult to believe, but factories put billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year. One ton is over 2,000 pounds, so it is a lot of pollution. There is too much CO2 and there aren't enough trees, so the world is getting warmer. In other words, we have a greenhouse effect. This is terrible for the environment.
What can we do about this First, we can stop using so much coal and oil. We can learn to use different kinds of energy: the sun, wind, steam from volcanoes, and heat from inside the earth. Second, instead of cutting down trees, we should plant more trees. One tree can absorb ten pounds of carbon dioxide every year.
The trees are good for the earth's atmosphere and for Guatemala(拉丁美洲国家危地马拉). In small towns and villages in Guatemala, most women are poor and have hard lives. Trees help them in three ways. First, the Connecticut factories pay them to plant the trees. Their pay is corn, not money. The corn is good for their children. Second, these women know a lot about their environment. They know where to plant, when to plant, and what kinds of trees to plant. For example, they plant many fruit trees. The fruit gives them vitamins for their families' diets. Other trees are good for firewood. In a few years, the women won't spend so much time looking for firewood. Third, all these trees are good for the soil. Now rain can't wash the soil down from the mountains so easily.
This plan isn't enough to stop the greenhouse effect. However, it's a start. The woman of Guatemala are helping themselves and helping their environment as well as themselves.
32.Which of the following statement is NOT true
A. Factories send more CO2 into the atmosphere.
B. Trees can't absorb the same CO2 as they did in the past.
C. Billions of trees are being cut down throughout the world.
D. The greenhouse effect is extremely bad for the environment.
33. What's the main idea of the second paragraph
A. The reasons why we should plant more trees.
B. Ways we can adopt to take heat from volcanoes.
C. Measures to be taken to forbid the use of coal and oil.
D. Things we can do to stop or reduce the greenhouse effect.
34. How does planting trees help improve women's lives in Guatemala
A. By preventing the greenhouse effect.
B. By developing their skills of planting trees.
C. By enabling them to earn more money to support their family.
D. By making them get corn and fruit to feed their family in return.
35.What's the author's attitude towards the plan of planting trees in Guatemala
A. Critical. B. Neutral. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.

Lazy people will never amount to anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.

___39__ Spouses(配偶) and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. To fight household laziness, lead by example. The gym teacher blew the whistle(哨子) and four students dived into the swimming pool, racing to the other side. Then the next four were up, but only three stood on the diving board. "Where is Ren " the gym teacher asked in concern.
Ren's face turned red, and he was unsteady. He looked at the pool and stepped back. "You cannot make me do this!" he said.
Sadie patted him on the back gently. "You can do it! I will help you if you need it." Ren stared into Sadie's eyes and he calmed down.
"You can do it. You need to pass this class." The gym teacher said. Ren stepped on the diving board, putting his goggles(护目镜) over his eyes, and the blue cap hid his red hair. The whistle blew and Ren stood there as the other three swam away. Then one boy ran and pushed Ren into the water.
Sadie glared at the boy. "Why would you do that " A minute passed by and Ren still wasn't coming up. Sadie jumped in and pulled him out of the water. She gave him CPR(心肺复苏),and it took a while until water came out of his lungs. Then finally he spat out the water and sat up, feeling dizzy.
Ren looked over at Sadie, who breathed a sigh of relief. "Oh, thank goodness! Why didn't you use your arms or legs " Ren stared away from Sadie, looking at the bottom of the blue pool, then looking up at the gym teacher who rolled his eyes. "I can't swim. My parents never taught me as a kid. We are afraid of water."
Sadie put her hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry. I will teach you how to swim. The water is my favourite place to be." Ren thought for a while, and nodded gently.
